Yesterday, around 4:30 pm I had the worst disappointing experience when I went to my CVS Pharmacy (at West Patrick St., Frederick, MD) to return a Freestyle Libre 14 Day Reader prescription for my wife (which I picked up about an hour earlier). I explained that we don't need it because we learned after unboxing that we can just use the app on the phone as a reader. I wanted it to be exchanged with a box of sensor instead. The pharmacy tech explained that it cannot be returned because of COVID. She then told the pharmacist about my request and the pharmacist met me and again explained the same reason, and then she grabbed the reader from the paper bag and added when she saw that the box had been opened that all the more she can't accept it for return because it was already opened. Now, at this point, everything for me is okay and reasonable. But what happened next made my blood pressure soar. After the pharmacist put the reader back into the paper bag, the tech handed the pharmacist a bottle of hand sanitizer and said in a clear loud voice, "here have some sanitizer, they already touched it, and we don’t know what they have!” in front of me, with a line of customers behind me! I felt so embarrassed by this. I of course understand the concern, but to say and do it right in front of me was just so rude and very offensive. It took me a little while to collect myself from this embarrassment and thought to myself “stay calm” because I was about to blow. Then I said instead, “okay, then let me just buy a box of sensor.” The tech doubled down with her rudeness and said, “you can’t even get it, it is not covered by your insurance and it costs $800!” Another tech came over and looked baffled and said “it does?” Then this other tech grabbed a box of sensor and scanned it, and then this other tech told me, “this needs a prescription, and your prescription is for a reader not the sensor, so it does not give me a price here.” At this point I decided to leave. How could they think that I did not check the price of the sensor online before I even suggested to buy it. $800 for a box of sensor? Yeah right! Until now, it’s already the day after, my blood pressure is still soaring because of this incident. What a rude and offensive pharmacy! And, is that “because of COVID, this cannot be returned” even legal? I am never filling my prescription and doing business with this CVS pharmacy again! I just hope management will train their pharmacy rude employees on being sensitive. My blood is still boiling!
