I have used this urgent care consistently for years since I found it. They are somehow always super fast and I’ve never waited long here, ever. It’s always clean and the staff is friendly. Today I saw Dr. Miller and she was amazing. So warm and kind. It was a very vulnerable procedure and she made me feel safe. Thank you Dr. Miller!

What is urgent care?

Urgent care is a category of walk-in clinic focused on the delivery of immediate, non-life-threatening care in a dedicated medical facility outside of a traditional emergency room. Urgent care centers primarily treat injuries or illnesses requiring immediate care, but not serious enough to require an ER visit. They bridge the gap between primary care doctors and hospital emergency rooms, offering increased convenience and cost savings.

Common services and reasons for visit

Urgent care centers offer a wide range of services that cover most common health issues. These include but are not limited to:

  • Minor fractures, sprains, strains, and injuries

  • Minor burns and wounds

  • Cuts and lacerations requiring stitches

  • Skin rashes and infections

  • Urinary tract infections

  • Respiratory infections, including the flu and common cold

  • Ear and eye infections

  • Stomach ailments like vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration

  • Physicals and health screenings

  • Vaccinations and immunizations

  • Lab services including blood tests and x-rays

Patients typically visit urgent care centers when their primary care physician is unavailable or they cannot wait for an appointment.

Types of healthcare providers

When you visit an urgent care center, you may encounter various types of healthcare providers, each with a unique role and specific training or experience. These include:

  • Physicians: These are medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who have completed medical school and residency training. They diagnose illnesses, prescribe medication, and oversee patient care.

  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs): NPs are registered nurses with additional education and training, often holding a master's degree. They can diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medication, and may serve as a patient's primary healthcare provider.

  • Physician Assistants (PAs): PAs are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient's principal healthcare provider. They practice medicine on healthcare teams with physicians and other providers.

  • Registered Nurses (RNs): RNs provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients about health conditions, and offer advice and emotional support to patients and their families. They may also assist with diagnostic tests and analyze results.

  • Medical Assistants (MAs): MAs complete administrative and clinical tasks in the offices of physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities. They might prepare patients for examinations, take vital signs,

When to go to an urgent care

Urgent care centers are designed to provide immediate, non-life-threatening healthcare services. They're the ideal choice when you need prompt medical attention but it's not a severe emergency. Conditions that can be treated at urgent care centers include minor fractures, sprains, burns, cuts requiring stitches, severe cold or flu symptoms, and urinary tract infections, among others. Urgent care centers are also a go-to for preventative services like vaccinations and medical tests. If your primary care physician is unavailable or it's outside regular office hours, urgent care can provide the necessary treatment.

Urgent care vs emergency room (ER)

While both urgent care centers and ERs provide immediate care, they serve different purposes. ERs are equipped to handle life-threatening emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, severe bleeding, or head injuries. On the other hand, urgent care centers handle non-life-threatening conditions that still require prompt attention. ERs are open 24/7, but urgent care centers usually have extended hours, including weekends and holidays. It's also important to note that treatment at an ER is typically more expensive than at an urgent care center.

    Urgent care vs primary care

Primary care is typically the first point of contact for patients seeking non-emergency healthcare services. Primary care physicians provide routine check-ups, prescription refills, and manage chronic diseases. Urgent care centers, however, are designed to treat non-life-threatening conditions that require immediate attention when your primary care physician is not available. While primary care is essential for long-term health management, urgent care centers provide timely services when immediate care is needed.

    Urgent care vs retail clinic

Retail clinics, often found in pharmacies or supermarkets, provide basic healthcare services such as vaccinations, health screenings, and treatment for minor illnesses like colds and flu. They are usually staffed by nurse practitioners or physician assistants. Urgent care centers, on the other hand, are equipped to handle more complex conditions like minor fractures, burns, and severe cold or flu symptoms. They also offer diagnostic services like X-rays and lab tests. While retail clinics offer convenience for minor ailments, urgent care centers provide a broader range of services and can handle more serious, but still non-life-threatening conditions.

From preparing for your visit, to what to expect during your appointment, to follow-up care and communication, we've got you covered. Let's delve into what you can anticipate when visiting an urgent care center in Atlanta.

    Preparing for Your Visit

Preparation is key to ensuring a successful urgent care visit. Here are a few things you can do:

    • Bring a valid ID and your insurance card.
    • Have a list of any medications you're currently taking, including dosages.
    • Write down any symptoms you're experiencing and any questions you have for the provider.
    • If possible, book your appointment in advance to minimize wait time.

    During Your Visit

During your urgent care visit, you can expect a thorough examination and prompt treatment. Here's what typically happens:

    • You'll check in and provide your ID, insurance information, and medical history.
    • A healthcare professional will assess your symptoms and may perform diagnostic tests.
    • You'll receive treatment for your condition. This could range from a prescription to a minor procedure.
    • The provider will explain your diagnosis and treatment plan, answering any questions you may have.

    Follow-up Care and Communication

After your visit, you're not left to navigate your health on your own. Here's what follow-up care typically involves:

    • You'll receive instructions for at-home care and any prescribed medications.
    • You may need to schedule a follow-up visit or further testing.
    • If you have any questions or concerns after your visit, don't hesitate to reach out to the clinic.

    Cost and Insurance Details

Understanding the cost of urgent care and how insurance comes into play is crucial. Here are some key points:

    • The average out-of-pocket cost for a basic urgent care visit ranges from $71 to $125. Additional services like shots, x-rays, and labs may incur extra costs.
    • Comparatively, a similar visit to the emergency room averages around $1,318.
    • Most urgent care centers accept insurance, as well as both Medicare and Medicaid. However, it's always a good idea to check with the clinic beforehand to understand your potential out-of-pocket costs.

These clinics cover a range of services such as urgent care, occupational medicine, and primary care with walk-in availability. They cater to non-emergent health issues, offering a convenient option for accessible medical attention. Walk-in clinics vary from free services provided by government, charity, or foundation-operated facilities to private clinics with affordable rates, serving as a practical alternative for minor illnesses and injuries outside of traditional doctor's offices and emergency rooms.

  • Do urgent care centers in Atlanta take appointments?

Historically, urgent care centers were strictly an on-demand, walk-in healthcare service. More recently, as consumer behaviors and expectations have evolved, many urgent care clinics have begun offering book ahead visits, allowing consumers to select a same-day or next-day time that works best for their schedule. Use Solv to find a Atlanta urgent care center that offers advanced bookings (or appointments) and book online.

  • Are Atlanta urgent care centers open after hours?

Yes. Most primary care doctor offices are open during routine work hours, Monday thru Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Conversely, most of the urgent care centers in Atlanta are available after hours, on weekends, and many holidays. Typical urgent care hours are 8:00 am to 8:00 pm daily, although location-specific hours may vary.

  • How much will an urgent care visit in Atlanta cost?

The cost of a visit to an urgent care in Atlanta varies, with cash prices for the base visit generally ranging from $100 to $175. Additional treatments, such as lab tests, X-rays, or immunizations, can increase costs, typically between $50-150 each. If you're using insurance, expect a co-pay between $20 and $50, depending on your plan and whether the clinic is in-network. Prices differ based on location, so it's best to check directly with the urgent care center and your insurance provider for accurate cost estimates.

I found myself needing medical care and could not leave my home for having a special needs child during this epidemic..This was wonderful to have as a service the only issue I have is that the antibiotic prescription is only for seven days and I’ve never ever had a prescription for antibiotics for less than 10 days so I am a little fearful my infection may come back as seven days is not the norm of any time whether I’ve been to My Doctor or to WellStreet urgent care

The only thing that was not top of the line excellent was the wait, which was a bit long, but since it was a virtual visit, it's not nearly as bad as having that same wait in an onsite visit. I did receive an advanced notice that waits were running long. That was appreciated since it kept my expectations in check. As for the visit, the physician was attentive, courteous and helpful. This was a very efficient way of visiting. I definitely would recommend others to use this virtual urgent care service.

I had a virtual visit, with everything going on right now, it’s super convenient! The Doctor was informative, very kind, caring, and it was quick! I refuse to use another urgent care.. I’ve been using you guys for about 4 years now and have recommended many times. Keep up the amazing work, and thank you essential workers for your dedication, time, and for literally being on the front lines with everything going on in the country. You guys are people that we cannot do without, and you all need raises and paid vacations for your work! Thank you again.

This was the best healthcare experience I’ve ever had! From the patient staff member that took my payment to the beautiful spirit of the physician that saw me virtually, I felt very confident that my health was in the best hands. I’m so glad to know that my neighborhood urgent care is the best in Georgia.

This was my 1st experience with a virtual Dr. visit of any kind, and I was slightly apprehensive. However, I had a HORRIBLE migraine and even the though of driving to Urgent Care made it worse. The process to sign up took a few minutes and I did have to wait about 5 minutes, but considering when I scheduled the appointment time, there were literally appointments within 10 minutes. The Dr. came on the video call and though he could see me, he could not hear me. So he simply disconnected and just called me. He was very nice. Asked the right questions but wasn’t overly asking a million things. He promptly told me what medications he was calling into the pharmacy and even offered to call in some anti nausea meds. The whole appointment in clouding waiting on line took a total of maybe 5 minutes. I was overly impressed and immediately sent my husband to pick up my meds. Was getting a lot better in 2 hours. Highly recommend!!

I did a virtual visit. I feel the website made it sound like most things could be taken care of in that visit, but it seems I will still have to go into the urgent care to get checked. I have an earache. I wondered how they would do anything without being able to look in my ears...and I guess that was the case after all. Overall a good experience, I guess I just misunderstood the amount of care that would be able to be given under the limitations.

I felt sick with common cold symptoms and wanted to ensure that it wasn’t COVID-19, so I made an appointment on the app and spoke with the NP, who kindly arranged for my rapid COVID-19 test at the nearest WellStreet Urgent Care. I was called with my results in 30 minutes or less.

My provider was Lindsey Brown! She came in the video chat with so much positive energy! Before my video call I was extremely frustrated with having to go to multiple urgent cares trying to be seen. Dr. Brown insured me that I will be well taken care of by her. She did not disappoint the energy she had made my whole outlook turn around! If I ever need a future appt I would request Dr.Brown.

I have always had great experiences at Wellstreet Urgent Care but this was over the top amazing! I didn’t have to leave my house and was seen quickly by a healthcare provider who was able to diagnose my problem and outline my treatment plan and next steps in a way that was easy for me to understand. He was professional, courteous, and friendly. I would definitely use the virtual service again.

The medical provider was excellent, empathetic, and went above and beyond to make sure I could feel better. I am so appreciative of her care and understanding. She deserves praise and recognition for her contined empathy given the times we are in and burn out is high. I should know as I am a mental health care provider myself and during "normal" times it is hard, but during pandemic times its draining and exhausting even more. Please take care of her and the staff that support her and your urgent care team. Also I am crying from pain and want this to be known because her care made me in my pain feel so compelled to write this. Her commitment should be recognized and commended. Thank you.

I called about an urgent need and was seen to within minutes. The doctor was friendly and helpful and diagnosed me right away, calling in my rx so that I had it in hand within a couple of hours. The issue was very painful and it was EXTREMELY convenient to be able to video conference instead of going to an urgent care clinic. Thank you!!

The provider was super nice and helped me get tested quickly. When I showed up to the urgent care there was an issue with the swab scheduling so she stayed on the line with me while talking to this office and helped me get in to for sure get tested today. Great customer service. Thank you.

The wait time was a bit long but grateful I was waiting in my own home especially as bad as I felt. Dr Harris was wonderful. She assets my situation and addressed my complaints with a plan of action in a timely and very friendly manner. I will definitely use WellStreet Urgent Care again. Thank you!

The doctor who provided car during the virtual visit was amazing, as was the care provider who actually conducted the Covid swab for the testing. However, the in person check in procedure at the urgent care center could definitely be streamlined to limit exposure and wait times. Even though all three of my fault members had already completed paperwork and a virtual visit and just needed to alert staff that we had arrived, we waited in line in the waiting room for 12 minutes behind others who had not done those things and this had more extensive needs from the front desk staff.

The provider for the virtual visit was extremely helpful during the process. And the staff at the urgent care were friendly. One concern/observation while at the location: a patient entered stating she was exposed to COVID and had symptoms and the lady at the front desk suggest she go to Target to wait for her appointment time. I don’t think you should be making that suggestion (sending someone to a public store full of people) as medical professionals especially when the patient specifically stated to had been exposed and experiencing symptoms. Just a thought.

The provider on the virtual visit was really nice. She helped me feel comfortable for a virtual visit, never had one before. She helped get me to the urgent care to get more tests since I'm still not feeling better. The ladies at the urgent care were also all very nice. They got my test and explained everything. I'm very thankful for all of them helping me. God bless all of you.

My virtual visit was easy to schedule and the provider was friendly and reassuring during the visit, but the lack of follow up mechanisms is concerning. After my visit, I realized that I want to have the influenza test in addition to the COVID test given my Upper respiratory symptoms because the urgent care administering the tests refused to give me the Influenza test without an order from this provider. I had no way to contact this specific provider following the visit to request this test be added, because she was only associated with virtual visits, not a brick and mortar location. I was only given the option to schedule a separate visit with another provider (at full cost). I’ve checked with my physician’s office and the my are no longer administering the flu test The lack of follow up methods and rigid protocols at the urgent care facility have been difficult to navigate. I had no idea that I would have an easier time getting a COVID test than an influenza test during flu season.

All I can say is wow! Simple and straightforward. The doctor took time with me, listened to what was wrong, and asked relevant questions. He was pretty great and nice too. Up to date knowledge of medications and what i needed. My meds were sent to a local pharmacy for me. And best of all I didn’t have to go inside ‘Covid soup’ at an urgent care. It was great care and convenient too. Great way to start off *** if you have need if medical care!

My first visit to Atlanta Plus Urgent Care. I was extremely impressed with how my admission was so quickly handled. Also, everyone on the staff, from the front desk, to the nurse conducting my testing, to the Physician Assistant were all not only extremely professional but really friendly. I don’t get that level of friendliness from my primary care physician’s office! You’ve earned my business!

I went to Urgent Care for a rapid COVID test. I was able to schedule an appointment online and use the drive thru option which was amazing. I was swabbed within minutes of arriving and had my results in about 15 minutes. Every single staff member I interacted with was kind, informative and efficient. I would definitely recommend this urgent treatment facility.
