What is urgent care?

Urgent care is a category of walk-in clinic focused on the delivery of immediate, non-life-threatening care. This type of healthcare facility bridges the gap between your primary care physician and the emergency room, offering extended hours and same-day appointments for acute illnesses and injuries. Urgent care centers are equipped to handle a variety of medical problems that need to be treated right away, but are not considered true emergencies. The goal is to provide prompt, high-quality care, in a convenient manner.

Common services and reasons for visit

Urgent care centers provide a wide range of services, often with shorter wait times and lower costs than emergency rooms. Here are some common reasons why people visit urgent care:

  • Minor fractures and sprains: Urgent care facilities are equipped to handle non-life-threatening bone and joint injuries.

  • Respiratory difficulties: This includes conditions such as asthma, pneumonia, and bronchitis.

  • Skin conditions: Urgent care can treat rashes, allergic reactions, and minor burns.

  • Diagnostic services: Many urgent care centers offer lab tests, blood work, and imaging services like X-rays.

  • Infections: Urgent care can treat a variety of infections, including urinary tract infections, eye or ear infections, and skin infections.

  • Minor surgical procedures: This can include wound stitching, abscess drainage, and more.

Types of healthcare providers

At an urgent care center, you're likely to encounter a variety of healthcare providers, each with their own role, training, and experience. Here are some of the types of providers you might meet:

  • Physicians: These are medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who have completed medical school, residency training, and are licensed to practice medicine. They can diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, and may specialize in urgent care.

  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs): NPs are registered nurses with advanced training and education, often a master's degree or higher. They can diagnose and manage most common and many chronic illnesses, either independently or as part of a healthcare team.

  • Physician Assistants (PAs): PAs are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. They train on the medical model and complete these tasks under the supervision of a physician or surgeon.

  • Registered Nurses (RNs): RNs provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members. They have completed a nursing program and are licensed by the state.

  • Medical Assistants (MAs): MAs perform routine tasks and procedures such as measuring patients' vital signs, administering medications

When to go to an urgent care

Urgent care centers are designed to provide immediate, non-life-threatening medical attention. They are a convenient option when your primary care doctor is unavailable or you cannot wait for a scheduled appointment. Common reasons to visit an urgent care center include minor fractures, sprains, burns, cuts requiring stitches, severe cold or flu symptoms, mild to moderate asthma, urinary tract infections, and other non-emergency conditions. Urgent care centers are typically open during evenings and weekends, providing an accessible healthcare option for busy individuals and families.

Urgent care vs emergency room (ER)

While both urgent care centers and emergency rooms provide immediate medical care, they serve different purposes. Emergency rooms are equipped to handle life-threatening emergencies like heart attacks, strokes, severe wounds, and major accidents. Urgent care centers, on the other hand, handle non-life-threatening conditions that still require prompt attention. If your condition is severe or life-threatening, you should go to the ER. However, for less severe conditions, an urgent care center can provide the necessary care at a fraction of the cost and wait time of an ER visit.

    Urgent care vs primary care

Primary care physicians are your go-to for routine check-ups, preventive care, and managing chronic conditions. They know your medical history and provide personalized care. However, they may not be available outside of regular office hours. Urgent care centers fill this gap by providing immediate care for non-emergency conditions during extended hours. While urgent care centers should not replace a primary care doctor, they are a valuable resource when you need immediate care and your primary doctor is not available.

    Urgent care vs retail clinic

Retail clinics, often found in pharmacies or supermarkets, provide a limited range of services such as vaccinations, health screenings, and treatment for minor illnesses like colds or ear infections. They are typically staffed by nurse practitioners or physician assistants. Urgent care centers offer a broader range of services, including X-rays, stitches, and treatment for more serious conditions like minor fractures or burns. They are typically staffed by medical doctors. While retail clinics can handle minor health issues, urgent care centers are a better choice for more serious, but non-emergency conditions.

When seeking urgent care in Peoria, IL, it's crucial to understand the process to ensure a smooth and efficient visit. This guide will walk you through how to prepare for your visit, what to expect during your time in the clinic, follow-up care and communication, and cost and insurance details.

    Preparing for Your Visit

Before heading to the urgent care center, it's important to gather all necessary information and items to ensure a successful visit. This includes:

    • Your identification (ID or driver's license)
    • Health insurance card
    • List of current medications
    • Any known allergies
    • Medical history information
    • Payment for co-pay or self-pay

It's also advisable to check the clinic's operating hours and whether they accept walk-ins or require appointments. Solv makes this process easier by providing the ability to directly book visits with the clinic.

    During Your Visit

During your visit to the urgent care center, you will first check-in at the reception where you'll provide your ID, insurance information, and reason for your visit. A healthcare professional will then assess your condition. This may involve asking about your symptoms, medical history, and any medications you are currently taking.

    Examinations and Tests

Depending on your symptoms, the healthcare provider may perform a physical examination or order tests such as blood tests, x-rays, or other diagnostics. These tests help in determining the cause of your symptoms and the best treatment plan.

    Follow-up Care and Communication

After your visit, the clinic will provide instructions for home care or prescribe medications if necessary. They may also schedule a follow-up visit to monitor your progress. It's important to follow these instructions to ensure a quick recovery. If you have any questions or concerns after your visit, don't hesitate to reach out to the clinic for clarification.

    Cost and Insurance Details

The average out-of-pocket cost for an urgent care visit ranges from $71-125 for basic care. Additional services such as shots, x-rays, and labs may incur extra charges. This is significantly less than a comparable emergency room visit, which averages around $1,318.

Most urgent care centers accept insurance, including commercial insurance through employers, as well as Medicare and Medicaid. It's advisable to verify with your insurance provider about the coverage for urgent care services to avoid unexpected costs.

It was nice to be able to make an appointment and not wait around to be seen. I didn't see any other patients at that hour, probably because it was the last appointment of the day. It's good to know they are open later than most urgent care facilities. The staff and nurse were very nice and the facilities were modern and clean.

Had to stop in as I had been in St. Louis, fell down some concrete stairs and regular Tylenol and muscle relaxer were not helping my headache. I had tried to make a follow up with my physician but her opening was at 1:00 pm and we couldn’t make that time. Her nurse told me to go to an urgent care facility or ER. The scheduling system allows you to self- schedule, very easy to use and reschedule appointment, gives you directions, and tells you how long you wait time is. Mine was not long at all, no one before me.

Dr. Stan Allen is always the most knowledgeable, gracious and caring physician. He makes me feel so comfortable and I know whenever I need anything from urgent care, no matter how big or small the issue, I can count on him. He takes great care in listening and explaining as well discussing the efficacy and side effects of any medications he may order. I feel so lucky to have him available at the Sherman Urgent Care!

- Verified patient on 5/28

Dr Abraham expected immediate responses when I couldn’t think due to severe shaking. He listened to me only part of the time. I was told I had a UTI when there, but at no time on the call back regarding my blood tests was I told I had a kidney infection. A 2nd medication was added but my urologist said it was not needed. Only when I went to my primary care was I told the kidneys were infected. I was disappointed in my care for the first time at urgent care.

I arrived and was told there would be at least an hour wait was that ok. Computers were down I was ok with that circumstance. After about 45 minutes an emergency patient came to the office. He was taken to an examiner room immediately. Again I was ok with that. If it were me I would like the same treatment. Once I was in an examine room and vitals were taken by the RN I waited for about a 45 minute for the Dr to come in. Both the Dr and the RN apologized that I had such a long wait. I think they were doing what an urgent care office is all about. I would go back to that office with no reservation. Wonderful care with sincere kindness

Molly welcomed me to the storefront and was pleasant and friendly. The registration process was quick and easy to complete, using a QR code and my cell phone. Since they are only conducting COVID-19 testing, you can walk-in without waiting behind patients at an Urgent Care or "express" clinic. I recommend this site for COVID-19 testing!

- Verified patient on 12/18

Great experience! Had no wait time at all! Nurse and NP were very thorough and friendly! NP Beth put my mind at ease from worrying. Will highly recommend Urgent Care on Wabash to my family and friends!! It's so reassuring to know that I have such a caring place as Urgent Care on Wabash to go to when needed!

- Verified patient on 2/15

I’m from Kansas City and happened to be in Chicago visiting a relative. During my stay, I had received the news that several of my co-workers had tested positive for COVID. I found Family Urgent Care through Solv. I received 2 COVID tests through them during my quarantine and my wait time was next to nothing in both cases. The staff was friendly and in both instances I received phone calls as to my results. The doctor was very informative and was able to answer all of my questions. I highly recommend them!

ZERO REVIEW!! Normally I don’t give bad reviews but today I will. My appointment was at list 2hrs in advance. Completed all my paperwork online and I was all set. I even arrived 5min early incase I needed to signed anything else. I waiting in the office for at list 40 minutes, I noticed 3ppl where called before me. I thought maybe it was taking longer to be call because my appointment was different and it simply wasn’t a COVID-19 test. I asked the front office what’s taking so long. They really didn’t have a answer to give me, final they tell me that they simply didn’t write my name in their check list. I was so upset for how unprofessional this urgent care really cares for people. To the next person be prepared to wait 40 minutes before being call even when they tell you is just a few minutes. Then expect to wait another 40 minutes in the room before they finally give a medication prescription.

We went for an urgent care need because of favorable Yelp reviews. I went in with significant abdominal pain and was seen after filling out a ton of paperwork. Was seen within 15 min and both Dr Anita and MA Lauryn were so terrific that we shall be switching to their practice for my first primary care.

- Verified patient on 9/29

Went in today to urgent care, had Dr. Abraham, he was very nice, patient, and informational. The only issue was that the location was hard to find since it had moved. It took awhile to find where the new location was due to the sign being small, and then the directions were not clear, and we had to drive around for a bit before finding the new location.

- Verified patient on 4/10

Everyone is very professional yet made us feel welcomed and our problem as very important. The Doctor was nice and explained things quite well. The X-ray man was so friendly that my husband didn’t feel uneasy at all. Highly recommend Urgent Care to whoever has a problem and wants it seen right away.

- Verified patient on 4/16

I was really worried after I read some terrible reviews. People said how rude staff was. Well let me tell you, everyone from the moment I walked in the door, from the receptionist, nurse took my vitals, person who swabbed me for covid test, and doctor came in with results, were kind, helpful and friendly. I would highly recommend AFC Urgent Care

My visit to Springfield Clinic urgent Care was a very good experience! Although, Initially I was very nervous about the visit but the kind doctor assured me that she would do all that she could to help me and she put my mind at ease. She even call another doctor's office to see if they would give me farther assistance. Thank you

I was beyond satisfied with my experience at Kids Urgent Care. The space is clean, comfortable and welcoming. The entire medical team was beyond friendly, respectful, patient and empathetic. Dr Abdullah was amazing! She took her time, explained everything so well and made us feel confident in her care. I will definitely return time and time again. Thank you to the whole team. You are appreciated!

My first time to visit Springfield Clinic's Urgent Care facility. No one likes to go to the doctor but when you need to this clinic would be my recommendation. From booking an appointment online, to checking in, being evaluated and a trip to x-ray, the experience was a package deal of professionalism mixed with a friendly, caring staff. I will return if I have to, hoping that I won't. Thank you!

- Verified patient on 3/4

Dr Abdullah is absolutely the best. She is beyond compassionate and exceptionally thorough. We always have such a wonderful experience at Kids Urgent Care- thank you for being so toddler/kid-centered and for putting both my son and I at ease with your kindness, patience, education, and time. We absolutely adore the Kids Urgent Care Team!!

This is our second visit at AFC Urgent care. I gladly came back because all of the staff are very friendly, professional, and caring towards their patients and guardian’s. This Urgent care is always very clean, organized and simple. I booked an appointment and when I arrived I only waited a minute or two before we were seen. I would definitely recommend this Urgent care to any families. It’s easy to book an appointment online or over the phone. Thank you all!

- Verified patient on 11/13

I ended up having to use the urgent care after I waited for two and a half hours for my primary Dr at Springfield Clinic to return my call, just to tell me that they couldn’t see me. I’m furious with him and told him to find me a new Dr. Which actually I haven’t gotten to see my Dr in over 2 yrs. Just his Nurse Practitioner.

- Verified patient on 1/20

When I arrived I was told it could be up to a 2 hour wait due to scheduled appointments and walk in traffic. I was seen by Esperanza Roman in about 30 minutes. She was terrific, very friendly and didn’t make me cry. If you are in need of urgent care, you will be in very good hands at Fox Valley UC.
