This is by far the 1st Medstar Prompt Care that ive been to and the wait was under 10mins. I checked in online, as usual, was called back promptly. The physician was gorg, she was patient and alert during my visit. Everything was going great until i had to get my blood drawn and given an injection. The medical assistant Janea, came in to draw my blood. She put on the tourniquet and looked for a good vein, my vein is huge in one arm, you can literally see it from a far. She went over to the table where the phlebotomy tray was (not in arms length) and grabbed a 23G butterfly needle. Just from the type and size needle she grabbed I knew she wasnt going to be good. I said "This vein is huge, you can use a straight needle if you like". She said okay. She then had to go out to get a vacutainer but left the tourniquet tied on my arm. Before she walked out i said "Im gonna take this off". She comes back grabs "A" tube, from off the table and, swabbed my arm with the swab that she used 2,mins ago. Im freaking out because I know she is about to be a horrible experience. She sticks the straight needle in my arm without the tourniquet. Then, I ask her "How are you going to get all 3 tubes and you left them OVER THERE(not in arms reach). After filling the 1st tube, she actually did what i would never expect anyone to do and that was leave a 23G straight needle in my arm to go get the other 2 tubes. So i held the needle straight on my own. I understand that everyone has there own technique but hers was so scary and messy. On the 3rd tube, i saw the needle slowly slipping out. I said its about to come out! AND IT DID! after that, blood is running down my arm because she didnt have any gauze ready. Then tells me to "fold my arm". I said "No, just go get the gauze". She wasnt holding the needle steady at all, it was not at a good angle so it caused a clot to form. Didnt even clean up the blood that ran down the arm!!! That part was over and i had to get an injection. I didnt want it in the glut because after that blood draw i didnt trust her to mess up and hit a nerve. So i asked for it in my arm. She said its not suppose to go in the muscle, which i know but there is fat on my arm. she swabs the back of my arm close to my armpit. NO!! i asked if she could do it in the area i wanted it, where injections would usually go!! she was about to stick me and i told her hold up, she didnt even clean there. She doesnt recap the needle or go get another needle to change it with so the needle is just laying beside me touching the exam table paper. she swabs my arm and i swear the bevel was turned downwards because she had to force it in my arm. BAM, injection right in my muscle. If she moved down a few centimeters that would have been perfect. SMH. Ive always been the type who never lets a MA draw blood because they dont have enough experience. Im sure she would have messed up my blood pressure if she had to do it manually. FYI, I have been a phlebotomist for 8 years. I work for a major lab. If i ever go back JANEA WILL NOT BE DRAWING MY BLOOD. Triage me ONLY!
