What is urgent care?

Urgent care is a category of walk-in clinic focused on the delivery of immediate, non-life-threatening care. This type of healthcare facility bridges the gap between your primary care physician and a hospital's emergency room. Urgent care centers provide care outside of regular office hours, including evenings and weekends, making them an excellent resource for those unexpected health concerns. They are equipped to handle a variety of conditions that require prompt attention, such as minor fractures, burns, sprains, and infections.

Common services and reasons for visit

Urgent care centers offer a wide range of services to address various health concerns. Here are some common reasons why people visit urgent care:

  • Minor injuries: These include sprains, strains, minor fractures, and cuts that may need stitches.
  • Illnesses: Urgent care can treat common illnesses like the flu, cold, stomach viruses, and urinary tract infections.
  • Diagnostic services: Many urgent care centers provide X-rays, lab tests, and diagnostics for conditions like strep throat or seasonal allergies.
  • Preventive care: Some urgent care centers offer routine physicals, vaccinations, and wellness checks.
  • Chronic condition management: Urgent care can provide immediate relief for flare-ups of chronic conditions such as asthma or diabetes.

Types of healthcare providers

When you visit an urgent care center, you may encounter various types of healthcare providers. Here's a brief overview of who they are and what their roles entail:

  • Physicians: These are medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who have completed medical school, residency training, and are licensed to practice medicine. They diagnose illnesses, prescribe medications, and oversee your overall medical care.
  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs): NPs are registered nurses with advanced training and education, often a master's degree or higher. They can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and provide treatment.
  • Physician Assistants (PAs): PAs are medical professionals who work under the supervision of a physician. They can examine, diagnose, and treat patients, and may also prescribe medications.
  • Registered Nurses (RNs): RNs work under the direction of physicians and NPs. They provide direct patient care, administer medications, and assist with medical procedures.
  • Medical Assistants (MAs): MAs perform both clinical and administrative tasks, such as taking vital signs, assisting with exams, and scheduling appointments.
  • Radiologic Technologists: These professionals perform imaging services, such as X-rays, which are often necessary for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

When to go to an urgent care

Urgent care centers are designed to provide immediate, non-life-threatening medical attention. These facilities are ideal when you need care quickly, but your condition isn't severe enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room. Some situations where urgent care is appropriate include minor fractures, sprains, cuts and burns, severe cold or flu symptoms, ear infections, urinary tract infections, and allergic reactions. Urgent care centers in Binghamton, NY, offer extended hours and are often open on weekends and holidays, making them a convenient option when your primary care provider is unavailable.

Urgent care vs emergency room (ER)

While both urgent care centers and emergency rooms provide immediate care, they cater to different medical needs. ERs are equipped to handle life-threatening emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, severe bleeding, or head injuries. In contrast, urgent care centers are designed for less severe situations that still require prompt attention. Choosing an urgent care center over an ER for non-emergencies can save you time and money, as ERs often have longer wait times and higher costs. However, always head to the ER if you believe your life or health is in serious danger.

Urgent care vs primary care

Primary care providers are your go-to for routine check-ups, preventive care, and managing chronic conditions. They know your health history and can provide personalized care. On the other hand, urgent care centers are there for immediate, non-life-threatening situations when your primary care provider is unavailable. They don't replace the need for a primary care provider, but they offer a convenient, often quicker alternative for immediate care needs.

Urgent care vs retail clinic

Retail clinics, often found in pharmacies or supermarkets, provide care for minor illnesses and injuries, as well as preventive services like vaccinations. They're typically staffed by nurse practitioners or physician assistants. Urgent care centers, however, can handle more complex situations like minor fractures, burns, or severe flu symptoms and are usually staffed by physicians. Both offer walk-in appointments, but urgent care centers have more comprehensive services and longer hours. Depending on the severity of your condition, an urgent care center in Binghamton, NY, may be a more suitable choice.

Urgent Care Centers in Binghamton, NY

The city of Binghamton, NY offers few urgent care centers, with UHS Urgent Care and Lourdes Walk-in Clinic being the primary options in town. Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care offers virtual care throughout the State of New York, however. Selecting a Clinic

When choosing an urgent care center, consider factors such as location, hours of operation, services offered, and the qualifications of the medical staff. Reviews and ratings can also provide valuable insight into the quality of care provided. Additionally, consider whether the clinic accepts your insurance and if they offer the option to book appointments online for added convenience.

When seeking urgent care in Binghamton, NY, you can expect a seamless experience that prioritizes your health and convenience. From preparing for your visit to follow-up care, Solv ensures that every step of your healthcare journey is handled with professionalism and efficiency.

Preparing for your visit

Before visiting an urgent care center, it's essential to prepare adequately to ensure a successful visit. Make sure to bring your identification, insurance information, and a list of any medications you are currently taking. If you have any relevant medical records or recent test results, bring those along as well. It's also helpful to prepare a list of questions or concerns you may have for the healthcare provider. This preparation will allow the clinic to provide the most accurate and effective care possible.

During your visit

During your visit to an urgent care center, you'll be seen by a healthcare provider who will assess your condition, provide treatment, and answer any questions you may have. You may undergo diagnostic tests, receive medication, or be referred to a specialist if necessary. The goal is to address your immediate health concerns promptly and efficiently.

Wait Times

While urgent care centers aim to see patients as quickly as possible, wait times can vary depending on the number of patients and the severity of their conditions. However, urgent care centers typically have shorter wait times compared to emergency rooms.

Staff Interaction

Expect to interact with various staff members during your visit, including receptionists, nurses, and physicians. Each team member plays a crucial role in your care and is committed to providing a positive healthcare experience.

Follow-up care and communication

After your visit, the urgent care center may provide instructions for follow-up care. This could include taking prescribed medications, scheduling a follow-up appointment, or seeking further care from a specialist. Some clinics may also offer telehealth services for follow-up consultations. It's crucial to follow these instructions to ensure your health and recovery.

Cost and insurance details

The cost of an urgent care visit can vary, but the average out-of-pocket cost for basic care ranges from $71 to $125. This cost can increase if additional services like shots, x-rays, or labs are required. In comparison, a comparable visit to an emergency room can average around $1,318. Most urgent care centers accept insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid, which can significantly reduce the out-of-pocket cost for patients.

When I went to be checked at ProHealth Urgent Care I did not know what to expect but everyone was courteous friendly encouraging and extremely professional. Bottles of water and hand sanitizer was available for patients. The wait time at least for me was probably less than going to most doctors. They took our cell phone numbers and we either appropriately sat distancing outside on benches , or in our car or could even run into a store. You could check your waiting time and they called you when you could come in. People at the front desk were professional and welcoming, The Doctor kept me calm & took all the tests needed. Technician who took xray was Extremely nice and very professional. If u have an urgent problem it’s a wonderful facility. Many thanks to all the people who work there. You are doing a wonderful job and I know it’s not easy,

I showed up as a walk in to get a Covid rapid test; the waiting room was clean and the receptionists were extremely decent, patient and kind! They signed me in and I then had an hour to do errands and I was texted to return and was seen shortly upon arrival ; the nurse was very gentle the Covid test was tolerable ( not nearly as unpleasant as I thought it might be!) my Covid test was negative; results came immediately and followed with an excellent follow up visit with nurse practitioner! I have only one other urgent care location to compare this with which was stuffy and unproductive; 3 staff were sitting around talking and there was little effort to meet my needs! While each visit I have made to This urgent care location has been Extrenely efficient and productive and positive!

I went in with very bad sore throat and they were able to test me and provide treatment right away -so that by the time I left was feeling a good deal better. Everyone wasVery professional and the MD was partcularly kind. I was disappointed that they were unable to get an iV into me - so that I could be treated right away with antibiotics and steroids but I’ve been told that I have tough veins. The shot that they gave me in Lieu of the iV treatment was very uncomfortable and painful And I decided not to have the second shot- got the oral medication instead . The MD was very accommodating with that . But I would definitely not recommend that shot in the buttocks - too painful overall a positive experience and I would definitely recommend this Urgent care site to other patients

This is the first time that I had use the urgent care. I went to urgent care in New Rochelle on Huguenot Street which was excellent the staff and the people were very friendly and they treated me with kid gloves. I had gotten x-rays done I saw the doctor and she had informed me that I had seven fractured ribs on my right side and that she contacted my primary doctor and he suggested that I get a CAT scan to check my lungs to make sure that they were in punctured. She did she wrote up a script and I went to your other Westmed I’ve been Rye which was very nice also they contacted them and when I got there they took me in right away the radiologist her name was Donna she was very nice very sweet and said to me let me know if I hurt you while I was lying down on the CAT scan table because of my seven fractured ribs I really really appreciate all the work and service that I had gotten. I take your service over the surface of the emergency room in a hospital. The wait time was not bad at all both at New Rochelle because I had made the appointment The day before and they had advised Westmed and Rye that I was coming up the wait time was no time at all.

We waited for 3 1/2 hours to be seen. I realize it was busy, but I have never waited that long in any urgent care, ever. I dislike the new sign in process, which pretty much forces you to download an app to utilize, for which I don't have enough storage on my phone for. The x-ray technician was rude, and very short and snippy with her responses. My daughter came back from her xray very upset because she said the woman was "very rough" with her, yanking her hand in place and was very short tempered when she cried out in pain from the woman pulling on her hand so hard. (She has an injured finger) When she came in the room with my daughter, I smiled and said hi to the technician and she just glared at me and walked out. Not a very pleasant attitude/demeanor, especially working with children. The young gentleman who first takes the patient back and gets all the information and vitals was fantastic. He was upbeat and humorous, and you can tell he cares about his patients. The doctor was also very nice. The xray technician however, does NOT belong in her line of work, in my opinion.

I needed to take a COVID-19 test as somebody where I work turned up positive and my husband has many health issues, is 69 years old and is handicapped. I take care of him so I needed it done. We found out Wednesday but could not get tested then since nobody in any health facility had availability. I was told places open at 8 but lines start forming at 5:30 am. Since I needed to have the test, I got there at 5:15 to make sure I got in. I was first on line. I knew I had a long wait but it was my choice. Everybody on the staff was super friendly, helpful, caring and professional. The intake lady at the front desk, even after repeating the same thing over and over once there was a cut off on who could be seen, explained it in a very friendly and professional manner. The Dr was wonderful as well. She explained everything to me. The whole staff was kind and professional even though they had to work on Christmas Eve. It is very good to know that this Urgent Care is so close to my house and if I ever need to go to one, I will definitely choose this facility in Long Beach.

Our experience was soo wonderful. My 2 1/2 year old son was sick was a stomach virus and we were having a really rough morning and I called my Pediatrician and they recommended this urgent care and now I know why. The front desk staff were great and super friendly! The male nurse that took my son into the room was very nice and kind as well. We were so impressed by Dr. Chan and her wonderful bedside manners towards out so and my husband and I. We Initially thought our son was going to need an IV because he wasn’t keeping any fluids down but Dr. Chen had another medication in mind that didn’t involve an invasive IV which made us feel so much better. Within minutes of taking the medication that she gave him, he was doing so much better and he was getting color back in his face. I even at one point when we first arrived, got emotional from seeing my son throw up again in the doctors office there and Dr. Chan was SO comforting and supportive. I’m so grateful for all of the assistance from the staff at the urgent care and it made a huge difference in our day. I highly recommend this one for sure to everyone.

I had fallen at work they recommended me to go to urgent care in Jericho. I arrived and was seen within 20 minutes. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. The Dr was amazing he was very thorough and listened to me about how I fell and what was hurting me . He recommended x-rays and they where done within ten minutes. Nothing was broken just sprained he felt. Told me to ice and take off the next day . If anything else started to hurt or get worse to come back . Dr Goldstein was his name ( not sure this is correct spelling). The next morning another Dr called to check in and make sure I had everything I needed and to see how I was doing . Simply amazing that’s what I will and have told my family and friends about Urgent Care in Jericho. Very caring and compassionate. I was in the facility for approximately a little more than a hour . Date - April 8 *** Mary Jane Dudley

I woke up with a high fever, chills and muscle aches, naturally panic set in. My wife is 6 months pregnant and it’s our first child. We went to ProHEALTH circle urgent care on Page Avenue for tests. The line was around the building. Despite the madness and panic from every patient, the staff was amazing. The woman at the front desk was very patient and kind, not phased by the army of people waiting to get in. The medical assistant was very nice and respectful. The dr, Dr Rizzo, was just great. He was extremely knowledgeable and was able to calm us down despite being given bad news. He was very patient, he took his time in explaining everything to us. He really made it seem like he cared about us and our well-being. I’ve never experienced that before, especially at an urgent care and during a plague. 10/10 would recommend!!!

The receptionist at the front saw that I was very ill and tired so she offered me to lay down while I was waiting. This kindness goes a long way for someone who is not feeling well and just wants to lay in bed but has to be waiting at urgent care. This was a true sign of genuine care and kindness. Which I think someone that works in the field of medicine, needs to possess to be truly effective. So thank you to her! The doctor was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and had excellent bedside manner, as well!! Waiting is never fun, and at urgent care, everyone is going to have to wait, but I never had a nurse or doctor at pro health urgent care, that didn't apologize for the wait (even when they are doing the best they can, while still giving each patient the time they need) and wasn't extremely attentive, and thorough. These places are great.

The woman with long blond braids at the door of the Ridge Hill entrance (greeter) was really rude. Asked me to leave the building because I told her I felt claustrophobic waiting in the room for Covid testing but instead, she allowed a woman and her daughter to drink their iced coffees while they had a conversation with her without their masks as I watched from the outside glass door. I missed my scheduled appointment because of this greeter and had to wait to be called last because she did not inform them in urgent care that she kicked me out of the lobby. I could understand of it was the same protocols for everyone but it is not since she was so friendly with the two females that were having a conversation with her without any face coverings and drinking coffee.

The woman working the front desk was super friendly and extremely helpful with checking in and detailing what was going to happen while I waited for a suite to be sanitized for me. The technician that gave me my COVID screening was fun to talk with, and we discussed our tattoos and artists we liked. He was very gentle with the nasal swab, which can be uncomfortable for some people. The doctor that saw me was very polite, kind, and we had a good discussion about the exam and our experiences working in the Healthcare industry this past year. When leaving the woman working up front wished me a good rest of week as well as good luck on my upcoming interview which I had mentioned casually earlier when she asked the reason for my testing. I would most certainly suggest to friends, family, and co-workers to come here for their testing and other urgent care needs. A very clean facility and super kind staff, it was far more than I was expecting from my past experiences with Urgent Cares.

at West Islip, NY location, after online check-in, front desk response via text very quickly and provide further instruction. i definitely highly recommended this location For the same Pro Health Urgent care at different location, I got a very good first impression for a different visit prior. i was planning on going back to this location again for another testing at their late hour operation; unfortunately, there were some miscommunication and lack of response from the front desk after my arrival at their parking lot and did an online check in. the text message reminder was great and useful; but i got an conflicting text just before leaving home for the appointment saying my appointment time do not offer Covid-test, i need to go at least half hour early before my appointment time. so i rushed to location at least 25 minutes before my appointment time and did an online check in; i never gotten any response from front desk. after waiting past my appointment time, I walked up to the front door seeing a note saying do not enter unless has appointment and didn't see anyone at the front desk. i assumed clinic had closed for the day. this led me to book and visit the West Islip location

I had an urgent care issue and I attended Westmed on Westchester Ave. I had an amazing experience there from the receptionist right through to the doctors. Nurse Susan was so nice and professional, the big baby that I am, I was so scared to take my fifth Covid test! She did a swab that was so quick and painless, I didn't have time to cry!! NP Louise was very cordial & took time out to listen to my woes. Dr. Esteban is a fine clinician with extraordinary knowledge ordering a CT and all the necessary tests that would be done at an ER Hospital. I felt in very good hands here, the facility is very clean and they take all the necessary precautions with Covid. I highly recommend this facility and would definitely return for any medical emergency.

They called prescription into the wrong pharmacy , we discussed which one I use and both agreed for this visit due to how horrible I felt they would call it into a location that was currently open at the time of my visit. Being that my normal pharmacy was closed I agreed to another location . In the end it was not called into the pharmacy they said and even after walking into the pharmacy they called it in to the pharmacist said she would have it switched and to wait a half hour which I did. And still when I went back it was not done nor could they switch it to Shirley from manorville . I went to an urgent care chair how sick I felt and was hoping to get medicine into my system as soon as possible . Didn’t happen wasted 3 hours . Great friendly staff , very clean and efficient but not a great finish. I would go back and am hoping that this doesn’t happen to me or anyone.

Me and my family have been to Urgent Care many times for Covid testing but this was the first at this location. While your PA was extremely nice and caring, I can’t say the same of your front desk receptionist. We arrived on the day before Christmas eve without appointments because the phone recording clearly says that one was not necessary. She was totally unprofessional and rude, abrupt and out of line. My daughter was then able to schedule us for Christmas Day, but, again, the receptionist at the desk was unpleasant and abrupt in her demeanor. These are extremely difficult circumstances and every one is trying to cope to their abilities but a little compassion and understanding is certainly not much to ask from a health care agency. This is not the type of job someone should have if he/she doesn’t like dealing with the public, no matter the situation. Or, perhaps they should seek other employment that keeps them in a room with no social interaction. Urgent Care really needs to address how their receptionist staffing handles such matters if they’re going to see me in the future.

I cannot express how grateful I am to have this ProHealth facility nearby. Even in these crazy times, the facility was, as always, clean, dependable and filled w caring employees. I had called my primary for an appointment, thinking I had a severe sinus infection. Understandably, as some of my symptoms overlapped w COViD 19 symptoms (severe headache, dizziness, nausea), she asked me to go to a (different) urgent care instead. I knew better, and went to Pro-Health immediately. While I had the option to make an appointment online, they were running 3 days out, so I tried my luck, and walked in. I knew I could count on their safety protocols. I was the only person in the large waiting room. There was a receptionist on the phone when I arrived, it wasn’t 5 seconds later that a second appeared, took my info (I wanted a rapid COVID 19 test first, in case). He apologetically explained that he would call me on my cell when it was time to come in. I laughed: under the circumstances, I expected to wait upwards of 3 hours! They texted me a link, and I filled out paperwork in the car, then rec’d a link letting me watch my exact place in line, in real time. Clearly, they have some staff dealing w walk-ins, and others with those w appts. I was called in less than 50 mins later! This was my first COVID test, and we’ve all heard stories about that nasal/“brain” swab! This technician was thorough, but gentle. No sudden poke, but gentle twisting in both nostrils, sure to get at different parts of each nostril. I was asked to wait in the room for results, which came back (negative🤗) in less than a half hour. The Dr who came in to follow up about my sinus infection was professional and personable. As I’d had no fever, and was already taking Flonase, he started me on a 6 day course of steroids. 2 1/2 days in, and I already see an improvement!! I have used Pro-Health for years, whenever I was unable to see my primary. I have never once been disappointed. How they can handle the amount of people they are, while keeping patients apart, is nothing short of amazing!

I used to use a different ProHealth Urgent Care. The visit was fine. After Covid arrived it didn’t seem that they were trained in dealing with the situation or the patient’s. They were too afraid, it seemed, to deal with the situation at all. Some nurses were even nasty to me and when I asked for some assistance to help me fill some on my phone, I was told to read the prompts. I left. The next day I went to the ProHealth Urgent Care on the LIE EAST at exit 36. This was the Urgent Care i felt was so good. It was at that Urgent Care where each medical person were so much were so professional, friendly, so capable and they all had smiles for the patiences. I wanted to elaborate on my first response to you and better explain how well I was treated. They are a wonderful staff. If someone could show this to Dr. David Cooper I would be very grateful if he could read it. Thank you for letting me elaborate.

I went to urgent care Prohealth in Glen Oaks on February 27,*** because I spent the previous night with stomach pains and vomiting. I thought that I had a stomach bug and I wanted the doctor to prescribe medicine for some relief. I was seen by Dr. Perrotta who examined me and after 5 minutes concluded that I had appendicitis’s. He immediately told me to go an ER for a cat scan to determine if it truly was appendicitis’s. My wife rushed me to the ER in LIJ Hospital .To make a very very long story short they did a cat scan ,an sure enough , it was determined that it was indeed appendicitis’s which needed to be removed ASAP.The doctor at LIJ Hospital told me that since it was diagnosed early before it burst the operation would be a simple one . I had the operation at 1am the night of February 28 and went home in the morning at 10am. I’m thankful that Dr Perrotta correctly diagnosed my pain and his advise to go to the ER . By following Prohealth’s Dr Perrotta instructions my appendix was removed before it burst which would have led to major complications! I am great full for the care that I received at Prohealth Glen Oaks . I would most definitely visit again should the need require it and recommend them to my family and friends.

I've been to both the Ridge Hill and the New Rochelle Urgent Care, and they are both excellent facilities! The wait time is better at the New Rochelle center, but both facilities are staffed with EXCELLENT caregivers. I was seen immediately! NO wait time at all! The receptionists, nurses and physicians are TRULY exceptional! A special "shout out" to Nurse Melanie (not sure if I spelled her name correctly) in the New Rochelle Urgent Care! The nurse was both thorough and friendly. I immediately knew I was in good hands when I met her! The physician was thorough and helpful in giving me my next steps. GREAT experience while I was under the stress of not feeling well! Nurse Betty from Dr. Jimenez's office is a TRUE GEM! Nurse Betty called me to follow up on an email I sent, and she advised me to go to Urgent Care. I CANNOT THANK HER ENOUGH for her caring, friendly ear, and sound advice! It is quite obvious that whoever hires the nurses for Westmed is doing an EXCELLENT job, and I am thankful!
