Urgent care is a category of walk-in clinic focused on the delivery of immediate, non-emergency care in a dedicated medical facility outside of a traditional emergency room. Urgent care centers primarily treat injuries or illnesses requiring immediate care, but not serious enough to require an ER visit. These centers are equipped to handle a wide range of healthcare needs, providing convenience, accessibility, and comprehensive care to patients.

Common services and reasons for visit

Urgent care centers offer a variety of services to address common healthcare needs. These include but are not limited to:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of common illnesses such as colds, flu, and infections
  • Minor injury care including sprains, strains, and minor fractures
  • Physical examinations and health screenings
  • Vaccinations and immunizations
  • Laboratory services including blood tests and urinalysis
  • Prescription medication services

Patients typically visit urgent care centers when they require immediate attention for a non-life-threatening condition, need routine care after hours, or cannot secure a timely appointment with their primary care provider.

Types of healthcare providers

At an urgent care center, you will encounter different types of healthcare providers, each with their unique role and expertise:

  • Physicians: These are medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medication, and may perform minor procedures. They have completed medical school and residency training.
  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs): NPs are registered nurses with advanced training and education, often a master's or doctoral degree. They can diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medication, and provide education on disease prevention or management.
  • Physician Assistants (PAs): PAs are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. They train on the medical model and complete thousands of hours of medical training.
  • Registered Nurses (RNs): RNs provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients about health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support. They have completed a nursing program and have passed a national licensing examination.
  • Medical Assistants (MAs): MAs perform routine clinical and administrative tasks to keep the offices of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, and other health practitioners running smoothly. Their duties vary with the location, specialty, and size of the practice.

Each provider type brings a unique perspective and skill set to patient care, contributing to the comprehensive services offered at urgent care centers.

When to go to an urgent care

Urgent care centers are designed to provide immediate, non-life-threatening medical attention. They are a convenient resource for residents of Columbus, OH, when they need prompt medical care but cannot get a same-day appointment with their primary care doctor, or when their condition is not severe enough to warrant a visit to the emergency room. Common reasons to visit an urgent care center include minor fractures, sprains, burns, cuts requiring stitches, severe cold or flu symptoms, urinary tract infections, and other non-emergency conditions. Urgent care centers are typically open seven days a week and have extended hours, making them a practical option for those who need medical attention outside of regular office hours.

Urgent care vs emergency room (ER)

While both urgent care centers and emergency rooms provide immediate medical care, the key difference lies in the severity of health issues they are equipped to handle. Emergency rooms are designed to treat life-threatening conditions such as severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe burns, and major trauma. Urgent care centers, on the other hand, handle non-life-threatening situations that still require prompt attention. Another significant difference is the wait time and cost. Emergency rooms often have longer wait times and higher costs, while urgent care centers are usually quicker and more cost-effective for minor emergencies.

Urgent care vs primary care

Primary care physicians are the go-to resource for regular check-ups, preventive care, and ongoing health issues. They know your health history and manage your overall health. Urgent care centers, however, do not replace the need for a primary care doctor but serve as a convenient alternative when immediate care is needed, and your primary care doctor is not available. While primary care appointments need to be scheduled in advance, urgent care centers accept walk-ins, providing care at the time it's needed the most.

Urgent care vs retail clinic

Retail clinics, often found in pharmacies or supermarkets, are another option for non-emergency care. They are typically staffed by nurse practitioners or physician assistants and are equipped to handle minor conditions like colds, minor skin conditions, and minor injuries. Urgent care centers offer a broader range of services, including X-rays, lab tests, and treatment for more complex conditions. While retail clinics offer convenience and accessibility, urgent care centers provide more comprehensive care for urgent non-emergency situations.

What to Expect with Your Visit

When seeking urgent care in Columbus, OH, it's essential to know what to expect to ensure a smooth and successful visit. From preparing for your appointment to understanding the cost and insurance details, we've got you covered. Here's what you need to know:

Preparing for Your Visit

Before your visit to an urgent care center, there are a few things you can do to prepare. First, make sure you have a valid ID and your insurance card, if you have one. Additionally, bring a list of any medications you're currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. If you have any relevant medical records or recent test results, bring those along too. It's also helpful to jot down any symptoms or questions you have for the healthcare provider. Remember, the more information they have, the better they can assist you.

During Your Visit

During your urgent care visit, you'll first check in at the front desk and provide your ID and insurance information. You'll then be asked to fill out some paperwork about your medical history and current symptoms. Once this is done, you'll be seen by a healthcare provider. They'll discuss your symptoms, perform an examination, and may order diagnostic tests such as blood work or x-rays. It's important to ask any questions you have during this time to ensure you fully understand your condition and treatment plan.

Follow-up Care and Communication

After your visit, the healthcare provider may recommend follow-up care. This could include a follow-up appointment, further diagnostic tests, or a referral to a specialist. It's important to follow these recommendations to ensure your health issue is fully addressed. Most urgent care centers will communicate with you via phone or email to share test results and answer any further questions you may have.

Cost and Insurance Details

The cost of an urgent care visit can vary, but you can generally expect to pay between $71 and $125 for basic care. This cost can increase if additional services like shots, x-rays, or lab tests are required. In comparison, a visit to the emergency room can average around $1,318. Most urgent care centers accept insurance, as well as both Medicare and Medicaid, which can significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs. It's always a good idea to contact the urgent care center ahead of time to confirm they accept your insurance and to get an estimate of the cost.

The staff, nurses, X-ray technician and especially Laura Ridgley (NP) were outstanding! Laura was so kind , compassionate, and thorough and the nurses, X-ray technician and aides were all very kind and compassionate as well (helpful too when I lost my sunglasses and 2 male nurses helped me look for them). I have been to this UH Urgent Care site twice in the past month and both times have been so impressed with their friendliness, efficiency, care and compassion. The site is also very clean and their safety protocol for covid topnotch. They all deserve a special commendation and thanks. I have always appreciated medical workers, but even more so during this pandemic. Thank you Kent UH Urgent Care for exceptional quality and compassionate care.

I booked my appointment online. I was in the waiting room 3 minutes. The nurse was with me for about 10 to 15 minutes getting my extensive health history, was attentive and asked intelligent questions to spur anything I might have forgotten into memory. The doctor recognized me from prior visits with my children, did a necessary lab test, and we discussed if the results point one direction care will go this way; if the lab results go this direction these type of medications will be required and what my concerns were about the medications so I would receive what worked for me. The entire process with the doctor took less than 10 minutes and I was free to go. I received a call about 30 minutes later with the results and the medications were sent to my pharmacy, all of which were in formulary with my insurance. I definitely would recommend this place for urgent care needs. Everyone was so nice, professional, and fast. Now I can recover at home comfortably with chicken noodle soup and warm blankets.

My two kids and I were tested for Coronavirus. Everything went smoothly and the nurse was very nice. The only thing that I wish had been different is that we were told that we would receive a nose swab that would go only part way up. When we arrived to be tested the nurse explained that if we had gone directly through Urgent Care we would have received the swab that went halfway up, however we set up our appointment through a virtual visit and the only swabs that were available were the ones that go deep into the nasal cavity. I had unfortunately told my kids that they would not have that particular swab because that is what we were told. It all went well for them but I wish there hadn't been that confusion.

Mary at the front desk was absolutely wonderful when it came to checking me in and getting me seen in a timely manner. There was also a mother who came in with her two little girls and she was very caring and compassionate to get them in quicker since the little girl had a swollen eye. She was absolutely wonderful. When I went back to get my X-ray done for my knee the gentlemen was very respectful and walked me through everything that he was doing and when it came to seeing the provider she was amazing as well and explained everything when it comes to what to do next and referring me to an orthopedic specialist. It was by far the greatest experience I’ve had in any medical facility. No one ever hopes for an urgent care trip but if it comes down to needing to go I will drive the forty minutes to go to the Loveland location!

The nurse ask about me to be tested for the virus and I said no she got upset left the room and left my tube that placed on sink after getting tested for Threp-throat and another nurse can in with my paper work and pick it up. Another doctor act like she was scared to talk me. Nevertheless, the nurse was Jacob very polite and knew his job. The doctor I forgot her name she was on point Friday, the 30 of April ***. The best doctor I had since coming here. Very Patient, concerning and The doctor answered ever issue and pain The service was the best yet and I commend you all especially the Doctor. And Jacob not far behind. I truly appreciate your service.

This was my first time using Premier Health Urgent Care, and almost everything was wonderful! The wait time using Solv to schedule the appt was negligible, they took me right in. All of the staff were wonderful and I received excellent care. My ONLY nitpick is that the name is somewhat misleading. We have been using Premier Health facilities for many years and they ALL have ALWAYS taken our Tricare insurance. However, today I was told that Premier Health Urgent Care does not take Tricare because they are associated with Fidelity? Now that Medicare is my primary insurance and Tricare is secondary, it probably doesn’t make much difference to me, but it is very confusing; however, it will probably matter a great deal to patients who have Tricare as their primary insurance.

I arrived at 8:30am so I could get in line. When I went into hallway I read a sign that said go back to your car & fill out paperwork. I tried to retrieve paperwork but couldn’t find it. I then called the office #. A very rude women asked if I had a Dr’s referral. She then rudely transferred me to a main # which was no help. I went back into hallway & waited in a line. Then one person said to someone you have to take photo of a code to get you paperwork. I then tried to get photo which took several try’s. I returned to my car & filled it out. It was lengthy & took some time. Finally I submitted it & received a note saying their were 0 patients ahead of me. So I went back into hallway. I looked threw the window on door & saw a patient filling out paperwork on a clip board. So I went in. The window urgent care lady came to window & explained to me I needed to wait in my car fit a text. She said all the rooms were occupied. She was nice. So I did but was concerned because I was the 2nd car there at 8:30am & had all these other patients before me. At 10:30am I was text to come in & go to room 8. So I checked in at window again & was told someone would come out to get me. I then was called to enter the room. The nurse was nice in asking me questions & taking vitals. I asked if I was to receive the regular test & she said yes. She also explained the wait period for results. I was given the test with a protruding stick going into each nostril for 7 seconds in each nostril. She said it would tickle but it didn’t. It was only slightly uncomfortable. Dr Lana then came in. She asked me questions & had me try to smell a alcohol swab. She was very nice & concerned. I felt confident & comfortable with the Dr & nurse. The Dr explained the patient letter sheets the nurse had given me. She was very thorough. At 11am I was released & able to go home.

I was instructed to go to an Urgent Care by my Family Doctor so that I could be examined because their schedule was booked. I chose to go to Med Plus, it was across the street from my pharmacy. The staff made me feel very welcome and comfortable. I have many health issues and should go to the hospital to get my blood tested. I’m a difficult person to have their blood drawn so when it was presented to me that I would need to go to the hospital. I could completely understood why. I just didn’t want to expose myself to a hospital. I prefer the experience I can have when you have the same team of professionals that can put a name and face of the person that they are taking care of. Have and will refer them to others in the future.

I came in for a COVID test with my wife and it was our first visit so we did not know what to expect. We were very impressed by the entire experience — staff friendliness and efficiency, very short waiting time, we never felt rushed. This is our new go-to urgent care clinic!

I had an appt at 10:52 upon arrival I called the designated phone number for Covid testing, was told I needed to go down the street to urgent care because the time I had they don’t schedule like that. I had a confirmation email from compu net at the place I arrived at I Beavercreek. I went to the urgent care place and was told they would have to charge me if I wanted to go there and do not schedule. I went back to Compu Net and called designated number and she again said I wasn’t scheduled. I read her my confirmation and she stated she had my order from the doctor but no appt. after a few chats back and forth, she would squeeze me in. I did get tested. But obviously something is wrong with the systems or employees are overwhelmed. The employee giving the test was very nice and we spoke of the issue. Not blaming her. If it is a system problem it must be fixed.

Dr Marc Pesa was great. I’m so pleased with my care at Scioto Urgent Care.

The physicians and staff at Scioto Urgent Care are fantastic. I’ve used them on several occasions when my doctor’s office has been closed or can’t fit me into the schedule and Scioto has always provided immediate assistance. Dr. Rothe has also helped me resolve some issues my general physician was unable to pin point initially so I can’t recommend them enough!

Best Urgent Care experience I have ever had. Will be my go to for the future

The staff were super nice. Everything works as quick as possible. They Came in and did a check of us after our Covid test. Told us what to do if we were still feeling bad in few days and give us some information to help my leg pain, swelling and hurting. I have been to other Urgent cares before and I really hated them and I said I would never go back to one so I was really leery about coming to this one to get my Covid test. But now I know there is a urgent care I can go to if I ever need to. Everything was super great people were friendly and I did feel comfortable there. So thank you so much for that.

- Verified patient on 1/14

I was a walk-in, sign-in to out the door in 1 hour. This is excellent, especially because they saw 80 patients during a Covid peak this day, and usually see half that in a whole day. I give it 9.9/10 stars, only taking a little off Dr. S , and reluctantly so. He was very effective, diagnosed me immediately, and was correct, I believe, so far into my treatment. I only think he could have taken a better history from me. Again, this is just for constructive criticism. Would I see him again? Absolutely. Was his diagnosis accurate? I believe so. Otherwise, the other staff were very kind, welcoming, and efficient. I hope I don't have to return to Newark Valley Urgent care, but should the need arise, I would do so with confidence in the staff and facility.

I previously has a five star top notch excellent experience at UA Urgent Care. Absolutely excellent. This time I had a good experience and I received excellent care. BUT when I arrived and was checking in, it was cold, 30 degrees and the receptionist told me to go wait out in my car. I completely understand covid precautions, completely, BUT 1. I was masked 2. I was in a very high level of pain, so much pain that it was difficult for me to enter and exit my car. 3. I explained all this to the receptionist. 4. There was absolutely no other patient in the facility. No other patient waiting. 5. I stood outside and finished the paperwork. I was in pain to the point of tears. 6. The receptionist witnessed all of this. 7. The lack of empathy, compassion, and care were deeply disturbing to me. As an Urgent Care Facility, maybe you could improve your performance in this area, with a bit more attention to patient care and comfort.

I actually had a much better experience with Scioto Urgent Care than with the solv website to check in. I put my information in when I made the appointment and then it wouldn’t let me check in without inputting all of my information again. I just walked in to check in and they were very understanding.
