This clinic has shorter than average waiting periods

Short Wait Time

Had an accident and lip was split open, it was really bad. It was late they were about to close soon but they took me in put stitches in and then the same nurse called me 2-3 days later to make sure I was doing ok because she was thinking about me and wanted to make sure I was doing ok. That meant so much to me and now a year or so later you can barely see the scar. I don't think anyone could have done better. She said she did the stitches as she would've done it on her child. I really can't explain how great the care is there in words but there good people.

What is urgent care?

Urgent care is a category of walk-in care in a dedicated medical facility outside of a traditional emergency room. Urgent care centers primarily treat injuries or illnesses requiring immediate care, but not serious enough to require an ER visit. They bridge the gap between primary care physicians who might not be available or able to see patients immediately, and hospital emergency rooms that can be time-consuming and costly for non-emergency care.

Common services and reasons for visit

Urgent care centers offer a wide range of services to address various health concerns. These facilities are equipped to handle non-life-threatening situations that still require prompt attention. Here are some common services and reasons for visiting an urgent care center:

  • Minor injuries: This includes sprains, minor cuts, burns, and fractures.
  • Illnesses: Conditions such as flu, fever, earache, nausea, and urinary tract infections can be treated at urgent care centers.
  • Diagnostic services: Many urgent care centers offer lab tests, blood tests, and X-rays.
  • Preventive care: Some facilities provide physical exams, vaccinations, and routine screenings.

Types of healthcare providers

When you visit an urgent care center, you're likely to encounter various types of healthcare providers, each with a specific role in delivering care. Here's a brief overview of who you might meet:

  • Physicians: Doctors at urgent care centers are typically trained in family medicine or emergency medicine. They have extensive experience in treating a wide range of conditions and coordinating care with other healthcare providers.
  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs): These professionals can diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medication, and perform procedures. They often work alongside physicians but can also provide care independently.
  • Registered Nurses (RNs): RNs provide direct patient care, administer medications, and assist with procedures. They also play a crucial role in patient education and coordination of care.
  • Medical Assistants (MAs): MAs perform both clinical and administrative tasks, such as taking patient histories, drawing blood, and scheduling appointments.
  • Radiologic Technologists: These professionals perform diagnostic imaging examinations, such as X-rays, which are commonly used in urgent care settings to diagnose fractures and other conditions.

When to go to an urgent care

Urgent care centers are designed to provide immediate, non-life-threatening healthcare services. These facilities are ideal for situations that require prompt attention but are not severe enough for an emergency room visit. Examples may include minor fractures, sprains, burns, cuts requiring stitches, severe cold or flu symptoms, or urinary tract infections. Urgent care centers are also a great option for after-hours care when your primary care provider may not be available.

Urgent care vs emergency room (ER)

While both urgent care centers and emergency rooms provide immediate healthcare services, the severity of the health condition determines which is the most appropriate choice. Emergency rooms are equipped to handle life-threatening conditions such as severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe burns, or major trauma. Urgent care centers, on the other hand, are designed for less severe situations that still require prompt attention. Moreover, urgent care centers often have shorter wait times and lower costs compared to ERs.

Urgent care vs primary care

Primary care providers are typically the first point of contact for patients seeking preventative care, management of chronic conditions, or treatment for common illnesses. They also provide continuity of care, meaning they track your health over time. Urgent care centers, however, are designed for immediate, non-life-threatening situations when your primary care provider is unavailable, such as after hours, on weekends, or during holidays. While urgent care centers can provide immediate relief, they do not replace the need for a regular primary care provider.

Urgent care vs retail clinic

Retail clinics, often located within pharmacies or supermarkets, are designed to treat minor illnesses and provide preventative services, such as vaccinations. They are typically staffed by nurse practitioners or physician assistants and offer extended hours, including evenings and weekends. Urgent care centers, on the other hand, have a broader scope of services and can handle more serious conditions that are not life-threatening. They are typically staffed by physicians and offer diagnostic services, such as X-rays and lab tests, which are not typically available at retail clinics.

What to Expect with Your Visit

Seeking medical attention can be a stressful experience, but understanding what to expect can ease some of that anxiety. From preparing for your visit to understanding the costs involved, this guide will help you navigate your urgent care visit in York, PA.

Preparing for Your Visit

Proper preparation can ensure a smooth and efficient visit to the urgent care center. Here are a few things you can do:

  • Bring a valid form of identification and your insurance card.
  • Have a list of any medications you are currently taking, including dosage and frequency.
  • Include any known allergies or existing medical conditions.
  • Prepare to provide a brief history of your current ailment, including when it started, any symptoms, and their progression.

During Your Visit

Upon arrival at the urgent care center, you'll check in at the front desk, present your ID and insurance card, and then wait to be seen by a healthcare professional. You'll be asked about your medical history and current symptoms. You may undergo a physical examination, and additional tests may be ordered if necessary, such as blood tests or X-rays.

Understanding the Process

It's important to remember that patients are typically seen in order of severity of their conditions, not on a first-come, first-served basis. This means that wait times can vary. However, urgent care centers are known for their efficiency, and most patients are seen within an hour.

Follow-up Care and Communication

After your visit, you may be given instructions for follow-up care, such as taking prescribed medications, resting, or applying heat or ice to an injury. If additional tests were ordered, the center will contact you with the results. It's important to follow all instructions given to ensure a quick and successful recovery.

Cost and Insurance Details

Urgent care visits are typically more cost-effective than emergency room visits. The average out-of-pocket cost for an urgent care visit ranges from $71 to $125 for basic care, with additional costs for services like shots, X-rays, and labs. This is significantly less than a comparable emergency room visit, which averages around $1,318.

Most urgent care centers accept commercial insurance, as well as Medicare and Medicaid. It's advisable to check with the center beforehand to confirm they accept your insurance. If you're uninsured, many centers offer a sliding fee scale based on income.

With an estimated 15,000 clinics in the U.S., urgent care centers operate beyond traditional primary care office hours, offering a convenient and lower cost alternative to emergency rooms for urgent but minor health issues.

  • What is a walk-in clinic?

A walk-in clinic is a type of healthcare facility that provides medical care to patients without the need for an appointment. These clinics cover a range of services such as urgent care, occupational medicine, and primary care with walk-in availability. They cater to non-emergent health issues, offering a convenient option for accessible medical attention. Walk-in clinics vary from free services provided by government, charity, or foundation-operated facilities to private clinics with affordable rates, serving as a practical alternative for minor illnesses and injuries outside of traditional doctor's offices and emergency rooms.

Historically, urgent care centers were strictly an on-demand, walk-in healthcare service. More recently, as consumer behaviors and expectations have evolved, many urgent care clinics have begun offering book ahead visits, allowing consumers to select a same-day or next-day time that works best for their schedule. Use Solv to find a York urgent care center that offers advanced bookings (or appointments) and book online.

Typical urgent care hours are 8:00 am to 8:00 pm daily, although location-specific hours may vary.

If you're using insurance, expect a co-pay between $20 and $50, depending on your plan and whether the clinic is in-network. Prices differ based on location, so it's best to check directly with the urgent care center and your insurance provider for accurate cost estimates.

Had a Tele-visit with Dr Tweedy…was rather punctual knowing how busy they must be with COVID on the rise again. He listened very a tentatively and discussed possible options and causes as well as all next steps. Had to visit for test right afterwards and Ashley (I think that was her name…I asked but forgot, sorry) did my test. Was very nice and her instructions were complete and helpful. Def my Urgent Care of choice! Thanks all to making it an easy experience and a great one.

I was feeling really sick when I was seen. They were very friendly, the offices were clean and the doctor and nurse very thorough. Very satisfied with AFC urgent care and will recommend 100% to others. Am grateful for the whole staff considering how not well I felt. It made a big difference in my not so lovely day... Thankful for that.

- Verified patient on 6/29

Everything was great from the moment I went in. The front desk staff got me checked in and into a room immediately. Once I was seated in the room Brittany came in to check my vitals clean my cut and check everything, she was fantastic from start to finish. Dr Jenkins came in and was professional with an amazing bedside manner from the start and my stitches look great! Thank you to everyone there for making my first experience with Liberty Urgent Care so great!

- Verified patient on 6/7

It was a very confusing experience. We text messages telling us to send information to the wrong phone numbers. We got people telling us there was a telemed visit after I had already talked to the doctor. And they were trying to schedule me for anybody testing when we were just getting nasal swabs. Everyone was very nice to deal with but it was a very confused situation. I'm not sure what exactly went wrong but it seemed like the information that was given didn't get into the system. We were supposed to have urgent care come out to do testing on my staff and it seemed like it was not able to handle that group. It was handling everyone individually and not coordinated at all.

- Verified patient on 5/29

This was my first time using AFC Urgent Care. And it was my first time using telemedicine. I wasn't sure what to expect, and was pleased with how easy it was to schedule and appointment and meet with a physician. The doctor was friendly and caring. He listened to my concerns and provided a solution that was right for me. I was very happy with the whole experience.

Walked in and had to wait about 45 minutes to see someone but it was a Saturday and height of flu season. Everyone was so friendly and the dr really listened to me. I’ve been to other urgent cares and they always seem to misdiagnose my issue because they aren’t listening. I will definitely use them again if I need urgent care!

- Verified patient on 2/16

This was my third visit with Liberty Urgent Care, and again, I’m so pleased with the care provided by this practice. I needed to get a Covid-19 test in order to travel. Scheduling was a breeze online, wait time was quick, and Dr Tweedy was, as always, so kind and funny. The testing is done in the parking lot, so no exposure to sick people, especially if you’re just being tested for travel purposes. Results are always reliably fast, and a lab report is provided upon request. I like not having to worry about getting my results within the timeframe needed and knowing I’m receiving the same quality of care each and every visit.

Front desk staff stunk! She told me to go home...Urgent Care does not check vitals! If I did not make it past your hound dog...I might have died, had a heart attack or stroke. Can you say liability risk?? When I got inside it was a whole different story. The "MEDICAL" staff were great! I went to the hospital by ambulance. My 24 hour hotline nurse from BC sent me to Urgent Care stat! Time for orientation for your front line people! Thank you for asking.

- Verified patient on 9/12

I was uptight going there as I needed to take a Covid test. The nurse that administered the test along with the PA were very professional and did not rush me as I had a few questions that I needed answered. Also, the girl at the desk who checked me in was a very pleasant young girl! Thank you Pediatric Urgent Care

The doctors at liberty urgent care or by far the most caring understanding and educated in my opinion. I’ve never felt more comfortable with medical professionals than I do here. Their level of care is bar none and exceptional in every sense of the word. I would recommend liberty urgent care to anyone and everyone with a matter that needs to be addressed immediately.

My wife, Phylis broke her toe 8 days ago. She is so stubborn and refused a trip to the doctors all week. Sure, we had buddy-taped the toe(she was correct, it really was broken) and one of the reasons for not seeing a doc was her experience that a doc couldn’t have done much more than she had. I tell you all this so you might understand her “reluctance” to come in. Throughout the week she struggled with walking so I finally got her to stop in the new urgent care. The two angels you had working Saturday 11/13 at 4 pm were awesome!! Somehow, they both went out of their way and hit exactly the right tone to get through to Phyl. They told her that even if it was broken, after 8 days of pain it could not hurt to let a medical professional look at the toe. Phylis raved about how gentle and thorough the front end staff, the nurse and the doctor were. And after more X-rays of her foot, she was provided a shoe-boot which thoroughly relieved the walking she needs to do. Thanksgiving is coming and Phyl will be making dinner for all of us, with minimal pain Other then what I introduce, of course! Phyl told the women at the reception area that she would sing their praises and she will. Neither of us would ever hesitate to return to Liberty for any emergency care

I sis ally love liberty, went today and there was a long wait, some staff are rushed and not so friendly in addition to not giving the attention that is needed at the visit. I am sure there is a reason for the change today. Please don’t let this place slide into being like all the other urgent cares. Liberty had always been different with friendly staff and drs that care. We recommend it to everyone. Stressed out employees don’t make for good care takers.

I needed a COVID-19 Rapid Test to return to work from being out-of-state. It was hard to find a location and to also find a location where the cost was not extremely high. Liberty Urgent Care was recommended to me, and the cost was much more affordable since I was paying out-of-pocket. The person that waited on me was pleasant and courteous and the test was done very timely, just waiting a short time for the person in front of me. I also requested that my results be emailed to me, and they were sent within an hour. I was very impressed!

What an incredible experience! Facility was clean, wait time was non-existent, Micah, Allison, Kayla, and Mel all greeted me when I came in and everyone was so kind and so pleasant. What a wonderful crew who were so knowledgeable and took such amazing care of me. I will most definitely recommend Liberty Urgent Care Huntingdon Valley to my friends and family!

I've been to this urgent care twice in the past few years. The customer service and bedside manner is exactly the same both times and how it should be for all healthcare settings. Vybe Urgent Care really seems to care about the people in our community and are making a difference in their patients' lives. I am very pleased and grateful to have vybe in my community. 🙏👏 Thank you Shamara, Ashlee, Doctor Toni M. and Kris for the great care I received.

I had a rather volatile reaction to a bug bite. I was able to show it to Dr. Tweedy who advised he felt it was probably not a deer tick bite and said why, so by the end of the conversation I'm not now worried. I appreciated the quickness with which the Liberty Urgent Care staff got back to me and appreciated their expertise and courteousness too! I will definitely recommend liberty urgent Care to my friends here.Thank you all

Although we waited for over an hour to be seen, the visit itself was excellent. I felt that both the nurse and the doctor were knowledgeable and friendly and welcomed questions. You can use the online appointment tool, instead of just dropping in, and that will assure you dont wait as long as I did. I would certainly return here over the other Urgent Care centers that are closer in location to me!

Fantastic experience. From the intake, setting the appointment, telemedicine visit, to being tested for Covid-19, everyone was friendly, efficient and kind. I made initial contact at 10am, and by noon I had completed a telemedicine visit, gotten my prescriptions and had a Covid test in the parking lot. This urgent care experience was far different from any other, and though it’s a bit of a drive, I will continue receiving services here. I’m shocked at how quickly the whole process was.
