Express Family Care, Bonsack - 3960 Valley Gateway Blvd, Roanoke
I was so sick with the flu I had to lay down while I was there and if I had have gone anywhere else it would have made me feel worse. Everything from the scheduling to the nice, caring staff, the true cleanliness of the facility, listening to my needs was top notch. I never want to go anywhere else after this visit! . I was offered water and monitored to make sure the shot I was given didn’t have any negative side effects. It’s one day later and I am already a little better. The wait time was outstanding I was taken back very quickly. This place truly cares. Thank you!

MedExpress Urgent Care, Christiansburg - 100 Spradlin Farm Dr, Christiansburg
I have been going to Med Express for urgent care for four years. I have had wonderful experiences every time. The staff are always so helpful, so empathetic and careful. I have had pneumonia, Lyme disease, terrible bronchitis, and a couple of falls with symptoms requiring X-rays. Sometimes there is a wait -- because so many people have come in -- but the care is never rushed. I cannot speak highly enough about the care I receive.

What is urgent care?

Urgent care is a category of walk-in clinic focused on the delivery of immediate, non-emergency care in a dedicated medical facility outside of a traditional emergency room. Urgent care centers primarily treat injuries or illnesses requiring immediate care, but not serious enough to require an ER visit. They are designed to provide quick and affordable treatment for non-life-threatening conditions, minor traumas, and common illnesses.

Common services and reasons for visit

Urgent care centers in Roanoke, VA, provide a wide range of services that cover most common healthcare needs. These include but are not limited to:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of common illnesses such as flu, cold, and infections

  • Minor injury treatment including cuts, burns, and sprains

  • Preventive care like vaccinations and health screenings

  • Diagnostic services including X-rays and laboratory tests

  • Physical examinations for school, sports, or employment

  • Prescription refills

Patients typically visit urgent care centers when their primary care physicians are unavailable, for after-hours care, or when they cannot wait for a scheduled appointment.

Types of healthcare providers

At an urgent care center in Roanoke, VA, you will encounter various types of healthcare providers, each with a specific role and set of expertise. These include:

  • Physicians: These are medical doctors who oversee patient care, diagnose illnesses, prescribe medication, and may perform minor procedures. They have completed medical school and residency training.

  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs): NPs are registered nurses with advanced training and education. They can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and provide treatment.

  • Physician Assistants (PAs): PAs are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. They practice medicine under the supervision of physicians and surgeons.

  • Registered Nurses (RNs): RNs provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.

  • Medical Assistants (MAs): MAs perform routine clinical and administrative tasks to keep the offices of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, and other health practitioners running smoothly. They may perform tasks like taking patient history, measuring vital signs, or assisting with examinations.

  • Radiologic Technologists: These professionals perform diagnostic imaging examinations, such as x-rays, on patients. They are trained to operate the imaging machines and to position patients correctly to get the best and safest image.

When to go to an urgent care

Urgent care centers are designed to provide immediate, non-life-threatening medical attention. These facilities are ideal for treating minor injuries and illnesses such as sprains, cuts, burns, respiratory infections, and urinary tract infections. Urgent care centers are also equipped to provide services like X-rays, lab tests, and vaccinations. They are a convenient option when your primary care provider is unavailable or you need care outside of regular office hours.

Urgent care vs emergency room (ER)

While both urgent care centers and emergency rooms provide immediate care, they cater to different medical needs. Emergency rooms are designed to treat severe and life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, severe burns, or serious injuries from accidents. On the other hand, urgent care centers handle less severe conditions that still require prompt attention. Additionally, urgent care centers often have shorter wait times and lower costs compared to emergency rooms.

Urgent care vs primary care

Primary care providers are typically the first point of contact for patients and provide ongoing, comprehensive care. They manage chronic conditions, provide preventive care, and promote overall health and wellness. Urgent care centers, on the other hand, are designed for immediate and short-term treatment of acute illnesses and injuries. While primary care providers are essential for long-term health management, urgent care centers fill a critical gap when immediate care is needed, or when primary care providers are not available.

Urgent care vs retail clinic

Retail clinics, often found in pharmacies or supermarkets, provide care for minor illnesses and preventive services. They are typically staffed by nurse practitioners or physician assistants and are a convenient option for simple health needs. However, urgent care centers offer a broader range of services, have more advanced equipment, and are generally able to treat more serious conditions than retail clinics. While retail clinics are a good choice for minor ailments and preventive services, urgent care centers provide comprehensive care for more urgent health issues.

Cost and Insurance Details

Most urgent care centers accept insurance, including commercial insurance through employers. They also accept Medicare and Medicaid, making urgent care a cost-effective option for many patients. Dr. Ravneet is amazing, one of the best primary physician in my opinion. she took 30 mins to understand my problem explained the treatment in details, She made me feel very comfortable, you can tell she really cares for her patients and she's very passionate about her job. I also like the fact I was able to FaceTime the doctor since during the covid situation the last thing I want to do is to go into a doctors office. I waited less than 5 mins before I was connected with the doctor. I will definitely be back for any urgent care needs and I also highly recommend Night Watch Pediatric to anyone in need of Urgent care.

This was better than going into a dr office for a scheduled appointment. Check in was easy. Staff polite and professional and the PA that saw me took his time. Every time I use this urgent care center I’ve always had a good experience. The only thing that would make this better is if it were possible to discuss the reason for the visit with more privacy.

Everyone was super friendly. Check in was very easy and wait time was small. They are renovating their facility with more rooms so there's unfinished drywall but that's not an issue for us. Doctor was reasonable, knowledgeable, had a great bedside manner, and was efficient. Very smooth experience. We used to go to Velocity Care and had several negative experiences there so we will be coming to Express Family Care for our urgent care needs in the future! Thank you!

From the moment I walked in the receptionist put me at ease and got me checked in very quickly. The x-ray technician / nurse was so comforting and awsome. Dr. Hubbard was awesome , his bedside manner was the best I have ever seen in a physician! I just wish that he had his own practice! He would definitely be mine and my family's primary carePhysician!! I was shown great care, was in and out in a very timely fashion ! In fact my visit was faster than any other urgent care I've ever gone to ! I just found my new Urgent Care Center if I ever need them again! I recommend Next Care on Plank road to any one who may need to visit a urgent care facility!

Generally speaking I can understand why there is an appointment system now but I also feel bc it is urgent care it is quite frustrating to not be able to be seen for like two or three hours. I’m not sure if booking an appointment through an app it is as effective as adminstration may think it is. The PM pediatric in Ashburn is closer to my home but we can never seem to get in there given the new system. If is frustrating as a parent to have to book an appointment online via an app and have to upload insurance document each time. Herndon, without fail, I can get in quicker without any wait. I do not mind driving bc overall the service is always great. The service at Ashburn, when I can get I can get in, is also superb as well. Please take this feedback into consideration. Nonetheless, I do Thank you for your service as health providers and recognize these are trying times.

From the moment entered the clinic, I could see that there was a great team to help each patient. The young lady at the front desk was extremely fast, kind and helpful. The physician assistant and the doctor were also very professional and caring. It was a great experience and I highly recommend this Next Care Urgent care to anyone in need because I strongly believe that this is the best. Please thank all of them in my behalf

The staff always seems to really care about helping you feel better. They were a little backed up today so I waited longer than usual after being taken back into a room, but it wasn’t an unreasonable amount of time. I always choose this location for my urgent care needs!

First time at customer. Ear infection. Made appointment online. Some what confusing process with check in. Online paperwork was easy to fill out. Only one one person staff very busy with the morning rush (8:00am). My appointment was at 8:30am, saw the doctor at ***am. The doctor appeared to rushed durning my ear examination. I did get a diagnosis and prescription. Overall I am satisfied with NextCare Urgent Care.

It was the best service I have had from a urgent care

- Verified patient on 2/24

Wonderful all around. It was a long wait but I was warned and the receptionist squeezed us in as a walk in so I am thankful for that. So even with 17 people ahead of us and one doctor handling it all, I was just happy to get in at all! I will definitely go back for urgent care needs (regular doc closer to home) and recommend to friends. Thank you to everyone who worked 9/12 and stay safe!

Dr. Alligood was amazing! He was so friendly and took a real interest in what I was saying. It was nice to see a doctor in an urgent care who is engaging and attentive.

Was at the urgent care on Saturday Feb. 22, your front desk Rep. Is really good. Saw her work under a lot going on and she performed beautiful. Mantained calmed, with a positive attitude. Happy beautiful smile and very pleasant towards everyone that needed care. I was very impressed, we lack of such great service all over now days. She is a plus to this location. The nurses as well very pleasant staff.

This place surprised the socks off me. In the past, I have always use an ER for urgent care. This morning, after bleeding for 15 hours from a small prick in my stomach, my wife suggested we go to this clinic. When we arrive, we were taken straight to a treatment room where a nurse removed the several bandages that bled through again. When she removed enough to see the accumulated blood, she left the room quickly and returned almost instantly with a male co-worker who could have been a doctor, PA, nurse or janitor. In less that ten minutes, he had applied silver nitrate and completely stopped the bleeding! No identification nor billing question were asked until after the end of treatment.

I love this place! Best urgent care in town!!

- Verified patient on 10/6

After going to previous urgent care centers, this is by far the only one I will go to now. The staff is friendly from the receptionist to the providers and I always feel as though I am thoroughly cared for without feeling rushed in an efficient manner. Thank you so much for your dedication to your patients!

The support staff, medical staff, and NP were all excellent, especially the NP. I work in the medical field and it's not often I'm truly impressed, but all of these ladies were wonderful, service was seamless, and both the diagnosis and treatment were on point. Urgent Care may be hit or miss depending on where you choose to go, but I was very glad I ended up taking my daughter here. Thanks, NextCare on Route 17.😁

I’m super glad that I made my appointment online the day before. Provider’s bedside manner was great. He kept us smiling or laughing the entire time. Check out process was easy. It was just a LONG wait. It took 2 hours from the time we checked-in online until we walked out…& that was with an appointment booked. Other than wait time, everything was fabulous! I would definitely recommend this urgent care.
