Usually long wait times but expected since covid never had a problem until today. Wanted to make other mommies of special needs kiddos or sensory needs kids about UMD we have been there a few times for covid PCR tests and understand while they do Nasopharyngeal as the standard many nurses have preformed the anterior (shallow) swab for my autistic sensory son and with studies showing both are just as effective most usually are fine doing this. Today was a horrible experience as this nurse he decided to say ok and while trying to swab assuming myself and my poor son wouldn't tell the difference after telling him that is he couldn't or didn't want to do shallow that was fine but we were refusing the Nasopharyngeal swab. Instead of refusing to test or letting me know he would disregard our consent he tried pushing it further prompting my son to stop it with his hand and having the nurse scold him I interrupted and told him my son's bodily autonomy mattered and that again we are consenting to the shallow swab and if he can't do it don't. He proceeded to use the nostril further away from me and quickly went up until I pulled it put of course upset and very emotional as my son was tearing and stimming as this was traumatic when an adult lies and ignored multiple times what we had both consented to and could of easily just not preform it. I even asked why was he sneaky and hurt his already fragile trust instead of just not doing it and ignoring what I his guardian had consented to. The swab was bloody and he said but that's what I'm trained to do which I again reiterated then refuse if you weren't going to go by your word and ignore me. He finally apologized for ignoring our patient rights by not getting consent but said "I didn't even go that far".. After years of therapy to get over the fear of Drs and procedures he was doing incredibly I was so disappointed that a professional would disregard us so blatantly and try to do it " his way" when he could easily not have done it at all! Being 8 months pregnant and my son having recently been out of a cast I was very emotional and left quickly to avoid a meltdown or my son being more upset. Just a warning to find a special needs friendly urgent care if your child is similar to mine.
