In all my 40 years of being in the health profession in Hawai'i, I have never experienced a more rude, curt, unprofessional and disrespectful medical practice. I was a patient for many years at the Doctors of Waikiki clinic for 3 reasons. I was extremely satisfied with their founding physician Dr. Alan Wu because of his knowledge and chair side mannerisms.Secondly, I respected the very personable and compassionate office manager Chrissy and thirdly, their convenient office hours. However, Dr. Wu and Chrissy abruptly left the clinic recently. The Doctors of Waikiki staff has always had a very high turnover rate. Most of their staff members are extremely rude and unprofessional. Yesterday, I went in for an exam hoping to get a chest x-ray to help diagnose the cause of my persistent cough. Their nurse practitioner Marina, the worst health care assistant I have ever encountered, was curt and argumentative from the start of my appointment. She asked me why I was there and I explained that I had a persistent cough for nearly 4 months and also a benign nodule in my left lung that needed an occasional chest x-ray for monitoring purposes. She told me that I didn't need a chest x-ray. I then responded that she was not a doctor and that I preferred that DR. TRPKOVSKI make that decision. She was irate and asked in a harsh tone if I was implying that she didn't know what she was doing. I told her that she was not qualified to diagnose my condition nor qualified to determine whether or not I needed a chest x-ray, as she was NOT a physician. Keep in mind that taking a preliminary chest x-ray is a very common first step when trying to diagnose the cause of a persistent cough. I know this as I am also a doctor with over 40 years of experience. I walked out of the exam room as I felt that she was too toxic to deal with. Mind you...this was my FIRST ENCOUNTER with Marina...ever. I asked the front desk to have the owner/CEO physician, DR. TRPKOVSKI call me when he got in that evening. He never called me back. Today, I talked to the new office manager Pamela, to explain my situation and to try to schedule a chest x-ray. I told her that I did not need to talk to DR. TRPKOVSKI at this time as he obviously did not care as he did not call me yesterday. Well, DR. TRPKOVSKI came on the phone anyways and told me that he wanted me to find another doctor. Huh? Can you believe that? After trying to explain how rude Marina, his nurse practitioner was to me, he didn't care. I am the boss at my clinic also. If my nurses ever behaved unprofessionally (they never do), I would be the first to apologize to my patient. Even if the patient was in the wrong, I would never "86" my patient UNLESS the patient was abusive. So as you can see...the TOXICITY at the Doctors of Waikiki permeates from the top down. I rarely post comments online but this was so over-the-top ridiculous that I felt a need to warn anyone contemplating being a patient at the Doctors of Waikiki. Good riddance! FYI, Dr. Alan Wu gladly accepted me as his "new patient" as I was able to track him down and schedule an appointment. In retrospect, this fiasco was a "blessing in disguise."
