There are many reasons that the healthcare status in Oklahoma in not as good as many other states. When you combine a number of bad habits perpetuated by many in the state, along with a high number of rural areas, it's not surprising to see a ranking like this. Oklahoma has the second highest death rate due to heat disease. Part of this is due to the large number of elderly living in the state. Over 14% of the state's population is over the age of 65. Luckily, though, when looking at the healthcare outlook of the state, preventable hospitalizations have lowered to 81 per 1000 discharges. This is down from 95.9 per 1000 in 2007.

With 158 hospitals in the state with emergency rooms treating cases largely resulting from the chronic conditions of residents. However, because of the extremely high number of those who visit the emergency room when a condition is not life threatening, frequently ERs get full quickly. Luckily, there are nearly 60 urgent care centers to carry some of this load and provide accessible, immediate care options for patients. While Oklahoma is ranked low for health status of the individuals in the state, there are many options when one needs to seek medical care.
