Short Wait Time

My wife Has been suffering from a case of shingles. This was spotted by our son, who is a nephrologist doctor at OHSU in Portland Oregon, when we arrived for a visit. He referred us to another doctor there who prescribed a one-week antiviral course which she completed today. Because her case had improved but not completely resolved, we visited the Manzanita Adventist clinic this morning to see if she should renew the antiviral course, seek an alternative medication, or just get something to relieve the sharp headaches associated with the shingles. The visit was extremely pleasing from beginning to end. The staff hotel with her on arrival, were pleasant and efficient and there was not a long wait time before she could be seen by extremely competent medical personnel. The first, hall asked preliminary questions as physician assistance or similar personnel generally do before one sees a doctor, was an EMT and very good. After the preliminaries, my wife was seen by an outstanding, extremely knowledgeable and competent nurse practitioner named Lee, whom we thought must be all fall scale medical doctor because he was so good. He was very careful and thorough in examining my wife and asking questions about when the illness began, what had been the symptoms, and in checking for any possible other issues besides the shingles. He recommended against renewal of the antiviral because of potential side effects of longer term use and because her case was resolving satisfactorily. He prescribed a steroid to deal with the pain, saying that he thought it preferable to opiates. Everything about him was impressive. On hearing my wife’s report on the visit and Lee’s prescription decisions, our doctor/professor son fully concurred. Based on this visit, I would rate this medical facility A-1!!!

Short Wait Time

The staff is not only friendly, they are knowledgeable. They are willing to get help when they find something unusual, never afraid to ask and confirm. This is so much better than other places I've been in the area, when I've been given misinformation or condescendingly told to go home and "get over it" when there was in fact a serious medical problem that could have, and should have, been dealt with earlier than it eventually was. Can't recommend THIS urgent care highly enough! Save your life! Go here first.

About Tetanus Shots

A tetanus shot is used to prevent tetanus, also known as lockjaw. Tetanus is a bacterial infection that can lead to painful muscle spasms, and oftentimes, death. Adults in the US have to be vaccinated against tetanus because there's currently no cure for it and roughly 10 to 20 percent of victims die from tetanus. Symptoms of tetanus come from a toxin produced by tetanus bacteria and usually begin appearing about a week after the infection occurs. The most common symptom is muscle stiffness that begins in the jaw and spreads to the neck, arms, legs, or abdomen, but other symptoms include trouble swallowing, headache, fever and sweating, irritability and restlessness, high blood pressure, palpitations, and muscle spasms in the face.

It's important to get treated for tetanus as soon as you know you're infected because if it's not treated quickly enough, you can die from suffocation. Tetanus shots are given in the shoulder muscle. If you've never had a tetanus shot before, you might be given a three-dose primary series. You'll get the first dose as a three-in-one combination called Tdap that prevents tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), and diphtheria (Td). The other two doses will usually be a dual vaccine and you'll receive them over a 7 to 12 month period. You should receive a tetanus vaccine between 2 months and 6 years old, as well as a teenager and an adult. Pregnant women might need a tetanus shot during the third trimester of pregnancy.
