Banner Health is a large nonprofit health system headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, formed in 1999 through the merger of Samaritan Health System, which traces its origins to the Arizona Deaconess Hospital founded in Phoenix in 1911, and Lutheran Health Systems, founded in 1938 in Fargo, North Dakota. Today Banner operates 33 hospitals and numerous specialized facilities across six states, primarily in the western and southwestern United States, with particularly deep roots in Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Nevada, and North Dakota.
