Getting Urgent Care in Jackson, MS

What is urgent care?

Urgent care is a category of walk-in care in a dedicated medical facility outside of a traditional emergency room. Urgent care centers primarily treat injuries or illnesses requiring immediate care but not serious enough to require an ER visit. These centers are equipped to handle non-life-threatening situations and are more convenient and generally cheaper than an ER visit. Urgent care clinics are usually open after regular office hours, including evenings and weekends, making them a preferred choice for those who need immediate attention.

Common services and reasons for visit

Urgent care clinics provide a wide range of services that cover a variety of health issues. Here are some common reasons why people visit urgent care:

  • Cuts, scrapes, and minor wounds: These clinics can treat non-severe lacerations and wounds, including those that might need stitches.
  • Minor fractures and sprains: Urgent care centers have the necessary equipment, like X-ray machines, to diagnose and treat minor fractures and sprains.
  • Flu and cold symptoms: If you're suffering from severe cold or flu symptoms, urgent care can provide relief and treatment.
  • Stomach ailments: Conditions like food poisoning or stomach flu can be treated at urgent care.
  • Diagnostic services: Many urgent care clinics can perform lab tests and X-rays.

Types of healthcare providers

When you visit an urgent care center, you may encounter various types of healthcare providers. Here's a brief overview of who they are and what they do:

  • Physicians: These are medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who have completed medical school and residency training. They diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medication, and may perform minor procedures.
  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs): NPs are registered nurses with advanced training and education, often a master's degree or higher. They can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and provide treatment.
  • Physician Assistants (PAs): PAs are medical professionals who diagnose illnesses, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. They work with supervision from a doctor but are trained to handle many of the same issues doctors do.
  • Registered Nurses (RNs): RNs provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.
  • Medical Assistants (MAs): MAs perform routine tasks and procedures such as measuring patients' vital signs, administering medications and injections, recording information in medical records, and preparing and handling medical instruments and supplies.

When to go to an urgent care

Urgent care centers are designed to provide immediate, non-life-threatening care for minor injuries and illnesses. These can include minor fractures, sprains, burns, cuts requiring stitches, urinary tract infections, severe cold or flu symptoms, and minor allergic reactions. Urgent care centers are also a good choice for diagnostic services such as X-rays and laboratory tests. If you need medical attention outside of regular office hours and cannot wait for a scheduled appointment with your primary care physician, urgent care can be a convenient and cost-effective option.

Urgent care vs emergency room (ER)

While both urgent care centers and emergency rooms provide immediate care, they serve different purposes. Emergency rooms are equipped to handle life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, severe bleeding, or head injuries. Urgent care centers, on the other hand, are designed to treat non-life-threatening conditions that still require immediate attention. In general, if the condition is something you would normally address with your primary care doctor, but can't wait for an appointment, urgent care is the better choice. Additionally, urgent care centers typically have shorter wait times and lower costs than emergency rooms.

Urgent care vs primary care

Primary care physicians are your first point of contact for your general health needs. They provide preventative care, treat common illnesses, and manage chronic conditions. However, they usually work on an appointment basis and may not be available for immediate care outside of office hours. Urgent care centers fill this gap by offering care for non-life-threatening conditions that require immediate attention, without the need for an appointment. While urgent care centers can provide immediate care, they are not a substitute for a primary care physician. For long-term health management and preventative care, it's important to maintain a relationship with a primary care physician.

Urgent care vs retail clinic

Retail clinics, often found in pharmacies or supermarkets, provide care for very basic illnesses and preventative services. These can include vaccinations, physical exams, and treatment for conditions like strep throat or ear infections. Urgent care centers, on the other hand, offer a broader range of services and can handle more serious conditions that are not life-threatening. They are equipped to provide minor injury treatment, diagnostic services, and some can even provide on-site prescriptions. If your condition is beyond the scope of a retail clinic, an urgent care center is a better choice.

  • What is urgent care?

Urgent care are available to assist patients that are looking for immediate, convenient medical care. In that manner, they are similar to an emergency room. The difference, however, is that ERs are meant to treat major, life-threatening injuries and illnesses while urgent care centers manage life’s minor bruises and bumps. In simple terms, an urgent care is seen as a walk-in health center that focuses in offering non-emergent health care conditions, including the treatment of the typical illnesses and injuries such as fractures and sprains, cuts and burns, scrapes, stings and bites, flu and cold symptoms, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, and much more. Most urgent care facilities offer both diagnostic and preventive care such as well visits, immunizations, STD testing and annual physicals. For regular visits and check-ups on these clinics, you should expect to pay between $20 and $100. The good thing is that most urgent care clinics will accept major PPOs and insurance cover, Medicare, as well as self-pay in the form of credit cards or cash. Urgent care clinics are located in most parts of the country in various regions to offset emergency room visits and provide a gap in healthcare services. They take patients during all hours of operations, which offer a significant convenience to most people who have and continue to undergo the need for sudden and immediate medical attention.

Debbie was wonderful! Even with the circumstances we were under, she made sure I understood what was going on and she was so friendly to my mom and I. Hattiesburg Urgent Care is always so great, and this time was no different!

I came because I needed care and did not see that Allegro would be open when I looked at 1st thing this morning but that Urgent care would. I made an appointment for 10 a.m. by the app which I love but was very disappointed in the wait time. I waited in waiting room for over an hour!! I did not leave until after 12:33 although that was the time that was discharged time on the message I received. I went to the restroom before leaving. The hand soap dispenser was off the wall, no soap and the paper towel dispenser was empty with the huge roll of towels on the counter by the faucet so there was little elimination of germs in the bathroom today. The receptionist kept leaving the desk I guess to help in the back because they were so swapped and didn’t seem to have enough staff since the NP was the one that swabbed me for COVID instead of her nurse. No on was at the desk when I left so I guess they had all they needed for a payment to be made 🤷‍♀️

- Verified patient on 11/28

I have been treated with the upmost respect, friendliness, and care anyone could possibly expect out of their health care provider. I’ve been seeing Lee for I guess 20 years. I wouldn’t go anywhere else. The staff at Urgent Care are some of the finest around.

- Verified patient on 6/9

Ms. Bowens was exceptional. I find that my follow-up visit was as expected in keeping my health normal. I will visit again. I don’t know if wait time was separated from appointment times being that it is an urgent care. Yes I would recommend. I have been served by both staff members and I accept the treatment that was done. I have insurance, so no problem for me.

- Verified patient on 9/22

I have used Urgent Care on a number of occasions and have always been pleased with the service I receive. Today (July 4th) I had an unexpected health issue pop up and they were able to see me on short notice - to your employees, thank you for being there!

NP Beth McCord is awesome! So thankful for good technology for days like today. My first experience with urgent care telehealth and I am very happy with the service. Thank you!!

Dominique at the front desk is always kind when I arrive and keeps me updated on my wait time. Vanita NP always takes time and listens to the concerns of her patients. I never feel rushed when I come to Urgent Care with these ladies.

I went to the Magee clinic at 3:40. I was told that I couldn’t be seen because they were closing at 4:00. So, I went to another urgent care clinic. After waiting an hour in the parking lot, I decided to try telehealth. 3 minutes later, I was speaking with the provider, Ms. Touchstone. She was awesome.

Lee Wallace and staff are kind and compassionate. Wouldn't recommend any other urgent care clinic. First place I've been in a few years that didn't throw meds at you to get you out of the door to usher the next cow into the corral.

I love the Urgent Care and staff in West Point, MS. I’ve never had a bad experience and the staff has always been attentive & courteous. I go there in lieu of having a regular physician.

Everyone was so friendly and fun. I understand the wait time is not anyone’s fault. Both nurses and doctor was absolutely wonderful and caring. If I need an urgent care agin, I will definitely be coming there.

My doctor was very personable and friendly. She was thorough is asking questions and prescribing the perfect medication for me. I would 100% recommend Maxem Health Urgent Care because I was even able to consult with a doctor from the comfort of my home and still get the care I needed!
