MEDcare Urgent Care, Garners Ferry - 7418 Garners Ferry Rd, Columbia
The "sign in online, prior to showing up" didn't work for us, but we got there 90 mins before closing and there were 30 people in front of us, with only 1 doctor working. Listen, these nurses were busting their butts to get everyone seen and feeling better. All that said, I was released 30 mins before closing and the doctor was able to prescribe medication that I was needing 35 years ago for the asthma and allergies I have been diagnosed with. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Getting Urgent Care in Columbia, SC

What is urgent care?

Urgent care is a category of walk-in care in a dedicated medical facility outside of a traditional emergency room. Urgent care centers primarily treat injuries or illnesses requiring immediate care, but not serious enough to require an ER visit. These centers cover a broad spectrum of healthcare, providing an essential bridge between the limited availability of primary care appointments and the high expense and wait times of hospital emergency rooms.

Common services and reasons for visit

Urgent care centers in Columbia, SC, offer a wide variety of services to address your immediate health concerns. These include but are not limited to:

  • Minor fractures, sprains, and strains

  • Cuts, burns, and other minor injuries

  • Common illnesses like cold, flu, and strep throat

  • Skin conditions such as rashes, poison ivy, and insect bites

  • Diagnostic services including X-rays and laboratory tests

  • Preventative care like vaccinations and physical exams

  • Management of chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure

Patients typically visit urgent care centers when their primary care physician is not available, or they cannot wait for a scheduled appointment. Urgent care centers offer extended hours, often including evenings and weekends, making them a convenient option for many people.

Types of healthcare providers

At an urgent care center, you'll encounter a variety of healthcare providers, each with their unique role and expertise:

  • Physicians: These are medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who have completed medical school and residency training. They diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, and may have specialized training in urgent care medicine.

  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs): NPs are registered nurses with advanced training and education, often at the master's or doctoral level. They can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and provide treatment, often working alongside or under the supervision of a physician.

  • Physician Assistants (PAs): PAs are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. They train on the medical model and complete these studies within the span of a few years, often working in collaboration with a designated physician.

  • Registered Nurses (RNs): RNs provide direct care, administer medications, and collaborate with doctors and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care. They are often the first point of contact for patients.

  • Radiologic Technologists: These professionals perform diagnostic imaging examinations, such as X-rays, which are often needed in urgent care settings.

When to go to an Urgent Care

Urgent care centers are designed to handle non-life-threatening situations that require immediate attention. These include minor fractures, sprains, burns, cuts requiring stitches, severe cold or flu symptoms, urinary tract infections, or sudden rashes. Urgent care centers are equipped to handle these situations, often providing faster service than emergency rooms for these types of conditions. If your condition is severe or life-threatening, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, or severe bleeding, you should go to the emergency room immediately or call 911.

Urgent Care vs Emergency Room (ER)

While both urgent care centers and emergency rooms provide immediate care, the level of care and the cost can significantly differ. ERs are equipped to handle life-threatening emergencies and severe injuries, such as heart attacks, strokes, or severe trauma. Urgent care centers, on the other hand, handle less severe conditions that still require prompt attention. The cost of care at urgent care centers is typically much lower than that of ERs, making them a more affordable option for non-emergency situations. However, if your condition is severe or life-threatening, you should always go to the ER or call 911.

    Urgent Care vs Primary Care

Primary care physicians are your go-to for routine check-ups, preventive care, and managing chronic conditions. They know your health history and can provide personalized care. However, they may not be available for immediate, same-day appointments. Urgent care centers fill this gap by providing immediate care for non-life-threatening conditions when your primary care physician is unavailable. They have extended hours, often including weekends and holidays, and do not require an appointment. However, urgent care centers are not meant to replace your primary care physician, but rather to supplement them when immediate care is needed.

    Urgent Care vs Retail Clinic

Retail clinics, often found in pharmacies or supermarkets, provide care for minor illnesses and injuries, such as colds, flu, minor cuts, and skin conditions. They are typically staffed by nurse practitioners or physician assistants and do not require an appointment. Urgent care centers, however, can handle a broader range of conditions, including fractures, burns, and severe flu symptoms. They are typically staffed by physicians and can provide more advanced diagnostic services, such as X-rays and lab tests. While both are convenient options for immediate care, the level of care provided at urgent care centers is more comprehensive than that of retail clinics.

    Diagnostic Tests

Depending on your symptoms, the healthcare provider may order tests such as blood work, urinalysis, or imaging studies like X-rays. These tests help to confirm your diagnosis and guide your treatment plan.

    Treatment Plan

Once your diagnosis is confirmed, your healthcare provider will discuss your treatment options with you. This could include medications, procedures, lifestyle modifications, or referral to a specialist.

    Follow-up Care and Communication

After your visit, you may need to schedule a follow-up appointment, especially if you were prescribed medication or need to monitor your progress. The clinic will provide instructions on how to care for yourself at home and when to seek further medical attention. It's important to communicate any concerns or changes in your condition to the healthcare provider promptly.

    Cost and Insurance Details

Urgent care visits are generally more cost-effective than emergency room visits. The average out-of-pocket cost for basic care at an urgent care center ranges from $71 to $125. Additional services like shots, X-rays, and labs may incur extra charges. In contrast, a comparable emergency room visit can average around $1,318.

Most urgent care centers in Columbia, SC, accept insurance, including both Medicare and Medicaid. However, it's always a good idea to confirm with the clinic about the types of insurance they accept before your visit.

Urgent care are available to assist patients that are looking for immediate, convenient medical care. In that manner, they are similar to an emergency room. The difference, however, is that ERs are meant to treat major, life-threatening injuries and illnesses while urgent care centers manage life’s minor bruises and bumps. In simple terms, an urgent care is seen as a walk-in health center that focuses in offering non-emergent health care conditions, including the treatment of the typical illnesses and injuries such as fractures and sprains, cuts and burns, scrapes, stings and bites, flu and cold symptoms, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, and much more. Most urgent care facilities offer both diagnostic and preventive care such as well visits, immunizations, STD testing and annual physicals. For regular visits and check-ups on these clinics, you should expect to pay between $20 and $100. The good thing is that most urgent care clinics will accept major PPOs and insurance cover, Medicare, as well as self-pay in the form of credit cards or cash. Urgent care clinics are located in most parts of the country in various regions to offset emergency room visits and provide a gap in healthcare services. They take patients during all hours of operations, which offer a significant convenience to most people who have and continue to undergo the need for sudden and immediate medical attention.

This was the best urgent care I have ever visited! Very friendly and caring staff!

As I learned earlier today that a relative tested positive for COVID 19 and I was around him last week, I needed to find a testing site to know my health status. Your clinic allowed me access to a rapid test that resulted in a negative result. Your staff were very caring and professional in providing this service to me. I was asked if I had questions after receiving my results and each question was thoroughly answered. Thank you to all the staff involved with my visit to Brocken to Better Urgent Care.

Imagine an Urgent Care where there is hardly any wait time, the entire staff is always friendly and the Physician shows a genuine interest in you and your situation. Veritas is that place!

For an urgent care visit it was great. I was in and out in under an hour.

I can’t say this was my favorite because I have no others to compare it to. I was unable to get into my doctor today and they suggested an Urgent Care. Since I frequent that shopping center I went there and was pleasantly surprised. Very efficient people in the back

We decided to do our Sports physicals today because we had such a positive experience when we had to come a few weeks ago for an emergency situation with poison ivy. I was very apprehensive to go anywhere due to Covid however we were very pleased and decided that we had no reservations about doing our sports physicals there since it was not time for a well visit at our family doctor. The PA Liz is fantastic!!! She’s very professional, very personable and has a wonderful bedside manner. Olivia, at the front desk, is equally as kind and friendly and makes coming to Broken to Better a Wonderfull experience!! We were encouraged by our Friend and Pharmacist at Goods Pharmacy to try your Urgent care when my daughter needed care on a Sunday due to her poison ivy that was spreading into her eyes and we could not have made a better choice!

Broken to Better Urgent Care is a great place. The nurse and Dr. Baker are so nice. Dr. Baker actually listened to my concerns and did not rush my appointment. She did not just send me away and brush off my symptoms. She thoroughly examined me and prescribed meds to relieve symptoms while waiting for COVID results. My results were back in 2 days. The facility was really clean and professional looking. It was super easy to book an appointment online and barely any wait time. I was in and out in a very timely manner. I will definitely be going to this urgent care from now on when I get sick and will highly recommend to family and friends!!!

This place was great!!! I loved the nurse! He was so nice and personable! The dr asst. was just as great. Kinda wish this was our regular dr and not an urgent care. We live in Chester and will always drive up to this location.

I made an appointment on line and filled out the information. I was seen really quickly. The staff is very professional and friendly. The doctor is wonderful. She asked a lot of questions, did a hands-on exam, asked about medicines I have used and “called in” a prescription. This is the Urgent Care I will be using.

Visiting from NC my son broke his collar bone! Went to Piedmont urgent care and left as soon as we walked in the door due to rudeness! For that I am blessed because we stumbled across this urgent care and they are AMAZING! They greeted us kindly and the visit was smooth from start to finish! The physician was great the front office staff were great, the nurse was great and the X-ray tech was great as well! They were kind, polite, explained everything throughly and made my 6 year old feel safe and comfy! Came home and told my family to only use this urgent care from here on out! They provide exceptional care! The office is clean, compliant & was very quick to provide answers! Thank you to all of you who made us feel welcome and safe!

I especially appreciated the knowledge gained from the doctor. Seem like a wonderful place secondary to an emergency room visit. Learning the urgent care is family owned was special. I would recommend this place to theirs.

I have referred several patients to this clinic, but it was the first time I had a need myself. They are quick but not rushed, courteous and thorough. I am thankful to have them nearby - the only option we had before was the urgent care.

Broken To Better is by far the best urgent care provider I've used in Rock Hill (my regular doctor is good at keeping up with scheduled needs, but as with most such practices, hard to see on really short notice, or on weekends, etc.)... Dr, Baker is not only really competent, with access to a large network of expert "consulting" folks), but is-- and this is so important-- KIND and THOUGHTFUL. I not only felt like I was getting attentive, expert care, but also truly COMPASSIONATE, CONCERNED care. And that's rare in today's medical marketplace. Every member of the staff there was really on top of things, and truly kind and considerate. I can't imagine using another urgent care provider locally!

There was a bit of a wait, with Covid, that was understandable. We were in and out in a timely manner and definitely recommend this urgent care. The staff was polite, friendly, and courteous.
