What is urgent care?

Urgent care is a category of walk-in clinic focused on the delivery of immediate, non-emergency care in a dedicated medical facility outside of a traditional emergency room. Urgent care centers primarily treat injuries or illnesses requiring immediate care, but not serious enough to require an ER visit. These centers are equipped to handle a wide range of medical issues that need to be treated right away, but are not considered true emergencies. Urgent care centers are convenient, typically open seven days a week, with extended hours into the evening.

Common services and reasons for visit

Urgent care centers provide services for a variety of health issues. Here are some common reasons why people visit urgent care:

Types of healthcare providers

When you visit an urgent care center, you might encounter different types of healthcare providers. Here's who you might meet and what their roles are:

  • Physicians: These are medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who have completed medical school and residency training. They diagnose illnesses, prescribe medication, and oversee your care.

  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs): NPs are registered nurses with advanced training and education, often at the master's level. They can diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medication, and provide education on disease prevention and healthy lifestyles.

  • Physician Assistants (PAs): PAs are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. They train on the medical model and are required to complete continuing medical education hours.

  • Registered Nurses (RNs): RNs provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.

  • Medical Assistants (MAs): MAs complete administrative and clinical tasks in the offices of physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities. Their duties vary with the location, specialty, and size of the practice.

When to go to an urgent care

Urgent care centers are designed to handle non-life-threatening medical situations that require immediate attention. These can include minor fractures, sprains, burns, cuts, and infections. It's also the place to go for rapid diagnostic services such as X-rays, lab tests, and EKGs. If you're experiencing symptoms such as high fever, persistent vomiting, severe pain, or dehydration, an urgent care center can provide prompt treatment. However, for severe or life-threatening conditions like chest pain, difficulty breathing, or severe bleeding, you should go to an emergency room or call 911.

Urgent care vs emergency room (ER)

While both urgent care centers and emergency rooms provide immediate care, the key difference lies in the severity of health issues they're equipped to handle. ERs are designed to treat severe and life-threatening conditions and have the resources to handle more complex medical situations. Urgent care centers, on the other hand, handle less severe conditions that still need immediate attention. They are also typically more cost-effective and have shorter wait times than ERs. However, if you're experiencing a serious medical emergency, an ER is the appropriate place to go.

Urgent care vs primary care

Primary care physicians are typically the first point of contact for patients in the healthcare system. They provide preventative care, treat a wide range of health issues, and manage chronic conditions. However, they often require appointments and may not be available outside of regular office hours. Urgent care centers provide immediate care for non-life-threatening conditions, often with extended hours and without the need for an appointment. They can be a convenient alternative when you can't wait for an appointment with your primary care physician but don't have a condition severe enough for the ER.

Urgent care vs retail clinic

Retail clinics, often found in pharmacies or supermarkets, provide care for minor conditions like colds, flu, minor skin conditions, and preventative services like vaccinations. They are typically staffed by nurse practitioners or physician assistants. Urgent care centers offer a broader range of services, including treating more serious conditions like fractures and burns, and providing diagnostic services. If your condition is more serious than a retail clinic can handle, but not severe enough for an ER, an urgent care center is a good choice.

Preparing for Your Visit

Before your visit, it's important to gather all necessary information and items to ensure a successful urgent care visit. This includes:

  • Your current identification (driver's license, passport, etc.)
  • Health insurance card
  • List of current medications
  • Medical history details
  • Payment for potential co-pays or self-pay

Booking your appointment through Solv can also help streamline the process, allowing you to choose a convenient time and avoid long wait times.

During Your Visit

During your visit, you'll first check-in at the front desk, providing your ID and insurance card. You'll then be asked to fill out some paperwork regarding your medical history and current symptoms. After this, you'll be seen by a healthcare provider who will assess your condition, provide treatment, and may order further tests if necessary.

Waiting Times

While urgent care centers aim to see patients as quickly as possible, there may be a short wait time, especially during peak hours. However, this wait time is typically much shorter than what you'd experience in an emergency room.

Tests and Procedures

Depending on your symptoms, the healthcare provider may order tests such as blood work, x-rays, or other diagnostic procedures. These can usually be done on-site, and results are typically available quickly.

Follow-up Care and Communication

After your visit, the clinic will provide instructions for follow-up care. This may include taking prescribed medications, resting, or scheduling a follow-up visit. If tests were ordered, the clinic will communicate the results to you and discuss next steps. It's important to follow these instructions to ensure a swift recovery.

Cost and Insurance Details

The cost of an urgent care visit can vary depending on the services provided. However, the average out-of-pocket cost for basic care ranges from $71 to $125. Additional services like shots, x-rays, and labs may incur extra charges. This is significantly less than a comparable emergency room visit, which averages around $1,318.

Most urgent care centers accept insurance, reducing your out-of-pocket expenses. They also accept both Medicare and Medicaid. Ensure to check with the specific clinic about their accepted insurance plans.

Recent Urgent Care Reviews (20)

Thinking that the call was starting immediately, but it starting much later made us think something was terribly wrong, like we needed to start the process all over. There ahould be some type of notification that states that someone will be with you momentarily. We almost hung up. Other than that, the doctor (Chaffin) was wonderfully responsive. She addressed all of our concerns, attained some background knowledge, and made a decision very much in line with my son's primary pediatrician. She said we made the right decision to use a virtual doctor with my son's history of asthma, because they would have placed him in a tent with those at high risk for COVID-19. We are very pleased and appreciative! Prescriptions are following his visit to address his short term and long term asthma needs during this precarious spring season. Great job Dr. Chaffin and Summit Urgent Care!

veery great experience with the doctor but I have not 1 note on my past visit today on January 22nd, ***. I liked the care I received from the Doctor but go to Walgreens that is supposed to open and it is closed before the closing hours states. None of the medications I was prescribed which is Bactrum and Prednisone. I've always had nothing but Wonderful Service from Summit Urgent Care but I have a severe spider bite that I was taking antibiotics for until I could see the doctor and I'm unable to pick up my prescribed meds and really need that medication tonight but it looks like I'll suffer in pain and sickness from the Cellulitis that I'm diagnosed with from staying at the Red Roof Inn and Suites in Newnan, Ga

God forbid you be sick with symptoms of anything much more a sinus infecrion with out being treated as if you are positive for covid. I understand this virus is a real threat. What I don't understand is why this is the first conclusion jumpped to by urgent care facilities, every time. If I'm thought truly to be positive it should be fully treated as such with how deadly this virus is. Not do you want to get tested or do you want us to give you some medicine to make the headache go away? That visit was a freaking joke. And I can't believe I wasted my lunch break and my coworkers breaks for it.

Amazing. Nurse Charles was top notch GREAT. He was very kind to my little boy, 3 yrs old. He tried all tests (temp, oxygen, heart rate) on me to make sure equipment worked properly before waking my very sick child to work him up. I thought was above and beyond compassionate and really appreciated his kindness. He explained all tests to me before doing anything to him (strep, flu, and covid). We were checked on frequently. He was seen quickly but i did not feel like we were being rushed in and out. The NP or PA who saw him was great as well. She was very kind and made sure all concerns were addressed. I've been to CMS urgent care before and I've always been happy with the care I've received. Thanks again Charles for your kindness and care. We appreciate you!

Everyone was so friendly and I barely had a wait time. I love this urgent care it has always been a good place to go.

The service was great! This was my first care visit and I was impressed with friendly provider service. I felt staff was knowledgeable and listened to my health concern attentively. Thanks for providing me with info for Bender pharmacy! I’m new to Georgia, a diabetic and uninsured and found a new home for other meds that I need but can now afford at a discounted price at Benzer!! I would recommend AppleCare Urgent Care.

When attempting to sign up for a virtual visit from Summit Urgent Care, I have to type all of my information in multiple times even though I have used SOLV before multiple times. It’s really frustrating that the information entered is cleared if the time slot you selected is taken by someone else before you get your information entered (forcing you to re-enter it repeatedly). I almost gave up trying to schedule a virtual visit today. I even called Summit directly before trying one more time online and getting through. When I tried to schedule via the SOLV app I couldn’t find our Summit Urgent care as an option - I had to go to the Summit web site then follow the link to SOLV and then try multiple times to pick a time slot and enter all of my information quickly enough to get scheduled. It’s very frustrating using SOLV with Summit Urgent Care.

Even though they were busy, they took their time with me and made me feel comfortable and cared for. I will definitely come back if I need medical assistance. I will also recommend them to anyone looking for urgent care!

I had a video chat at 3:13 PM on Friday, December 4 and they were running behind so I waited and I got a call from a lady and she was very very nice and she apologized for the way and told me I could go today the tent and be tested at Summit urgent care and Newnan and the girl was incredibly nice very helpful very thoughtful great bedside manner and pretty cute too. So all in all I am waiting on my results in the parking lot right now it has been a very pleasant experience and I would recommend this to my coworkers family and friends. However this should be no surprise to anyone because they care and treatment you received at Summit is always a five-star experience or at least in my ears and has always been a five-star experience so kudos to summit kudos to you guys God bless merry Christmas and happy birthday to me I’m negative.

My virtual visit was easy to schedule and the provider was friendly and reassuring during the visit, but the lack of follow up mechanisms is concerning. After my visit, I realized that I want to have the influenza test in addition to the COVID test given my Upper respiratory symptoms because the urgent care administering the tests refused to give me the Influenza test without an order from this provider. I had no way to contact this specific provider following the visit to request this test be added, because she was only associated with virtual visits, not a brick and mortar location. I was only given the option to schedule a separate visit with another provider (at full cost). I’ve checked with my physician’s office and the my are no longer administering the flu test The lack of follow up methods and rigid protocols at the urgent care facility have been difficult to navigate. I had no idea that I would have an easier time getting a COVID test than an influenza test during flu season.

Rebecca (she may have spelled her name differently) was WONDERFUL and kind. She really put me at ease and listened to my concerns and symptoms. She seemed to really understand and treat me effectively. The nurse who called me ahead of my virtual appointment was also incredibly kind. I really appreciated the quality of care and how extraordinarily quickly I was seen after making a request for an appointment. From the website to the paperwork process to the virtual visit, this was a smooth, comfortable, and pleasant experience. I had never been to this urgent care before, but I will definitely plan to come back as needed. (Also, I very rarely write reviews, but I genuinely felt compelled by the quality.) Thank you so much.

This was my 1st experience with a virtual Dr. visit of any kind, and I was slightly apprehensive. However, I had a HORRIBLE migraine and even the though of driving to Urgent Care made it worse. The process to sign up took a few minutes and I did have to wait about 5 minutes, but considering when I scheduled the appointment time, there were literally appointments within 10 minutes. The Dr. came on the video call and though he could see me, he could not hear me. So he simply disconnected and just called me. He was very nice. Asked the right questions but wasn’t overly asking a million things. He promptly told me what medications he was calling into the pharmacy and even offered to call in some anti nausea meds. The whole appointment in clouding waiting on line took a total of maybe 5 minutes. I was overly impressed and immediately sent my husband to pick up my meds. Was getting a lot better in 2 hours. Highly recommend!!

Best urgent care I’ve ever experienced in my life. Wasn’t even there an hour the staff was patient and friendly and I was able to get my medicine there as well. Great visit👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾

The medical provider was excellent, empathetic, and went above and beyond to make sure I could feel better. I am so appreciative of her care and understanding. She deserves praise and recognition for her contined empathy given the times we are in and burn out is high. I should know as I am a mental health care provider myself and during "normal" times it is hard, but during pandemic times its draining and exhausting even more. Please take care of her and the staff that support her and your urgent care team. Also I am crying from pain and want this to be known because her care made me in my pain feel so compelled to write this. Her commitment should be recognized and commended. Thank you.
