Springfield Clinic Urgent Care, West Wabash - 4525 Wabash Ave
Dr Abraham was thorough, explained my condition and did not rush to prescribe antibiotics. He assured me the urgent care would be open Sunday morning if I felt worse. The Benzoate pills helped. Four days later I am much better-still recovering but having no breathing issues. I appreciate that this visit is included in my SC records for reference for visits with my primary.

Had to stop in as I had been in St. Louis, fell down some concrete stairs and regular Tylenol and muscle relaxer were not helping my headache. I had tried to make a follow up with my physician but her opening was at 1:00 pm and we couldn’t make that time. Her nurse told me to go to an urgent care facility or ER. The scheduling system allows you to self- schedule, very easy to use and reschedule appointment, gives you directions, and tells you how long you wait time is. Mine was not long at all, no one before me.

Dr. Stan Allen is always the most knowledgeable, gracious and caring physician. He makes me feel so comfortable and I know whenever I need anything from urgent care, no matter how big or small the issue, I can count on him. He takes great care in listening and explaining as well discussing the efficacy and side effects of any medications he may order. I feel so lucky to have him available at the Sherman Urgent Care!

What is urgent care?

Urgent care is a category of walk-in clinic that focuses on the delivery of immediate, non-life-threatening healthcare. These centers are designed to provide an alternative to emergency room visits for ailments that require immediate attention but are not severe enough to warrant a trip to the ER. Urgent care centers are typically open beyond regular office hours, including evenings and weekends, making them a convenient option for those in need of medical attention outside of typical healthcare operating hours.

Common services and reasons for visit

Urgent care centers offer a wide range of services to handle a variety of health concerns. Here are some common reasons why people visit urgent care:

  • Minor fractures and sprains: Urgent care centers often have X-ray capabilities to diagnose and treat minor bone fractures and sprains.

  • Cuts and burns: Minor to moderate cuts, burns and other skin injuries can be treated at urgent care.

  • Common illnesses: Conditions like flu, fever, ear infections, urinary tract infections, and strep throat can be diagnosed and treated at urgent care centers.

  • Diagnostic services: Many urgent care centers offer lab tests, blood work, and imaging services.

  • Preventive care: Some urgent care centers offer routine physicals, vaccinations, and wellness checks.

Types of healthcare providers

At an urgent care center, you're likely to encounter a variety of healthcare providers, each with a specific role in your care. Here's a brief overview of who they are and what they do:

  • Physicians: These are medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who have completed medical school and residency training. They diagnose illnesses, prescribe medication, and oversee patient care.

  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs): NPs are registered nurses with advanced training and education, often holding a master's degree or higher. They can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and provide treatment.

  • Physician Assistants (PAs): PAs are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient's principal healthcare provider. They work with supervision from a physician.

  • Registered Nurses (RNs): RNs provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients about health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.

  • Medical Assistants (MAs): MAs perform routine clinical and administrative tasks to keep the offices of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, and other health practitioners running smoothly.

When to go to an urgent care

Urgent care centers are designed to provide immediate, non-life-threatening medical attention. They are ideal for treating conditions that require prompt attention but are not serious enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room. Examples include minor fractures, cuts that may need stitches, severe cold or flu symptoms, and minor burns. You may also consider urgent care for diagnostic services such as X-rays and laboratory tests.

Urgent care vs emergency room (ER)

While both urgent care centers and emergency rooms provide immediate care, they differ significantly in their capabilities and costs. Emergency rooms are equipped to handle severe and life-threatening conditions, such as chest pain, severe bleeding, or signs of stroke. Urgent care centers, on the other hand, handle less severe conditions at a fraction of the cost and wait time. If your condition is not life-threatening but requires immediate attention, an urgent care center is a more suitable and cost-effective choice.

Urgent care vs primary care

Primary care physicians are your go-to for routine check-ups, preventive care, and managing chronic conditions. They are familiar with your health history and can provide personalized care. However, they may not be available outside of regular office hours. Urgent care centers fill this gap by providing immediate care during evenings, weekends, and holidays. While they don't replace the need for a primary care physician, they are a convenient alternative when you need immediate care and your primary doctor is not available.

Urgent care vs retail clinic

Retail clinics, often found in pharmacies or supermarkets, provide basic healthcare services such as vaccinations, health screenings, and treatment for simple ailments like sore throats or ear infections. They are typically staffed by nurse practitioners or physician assistants. Urgent care centers offer a broader range of services, including treatment for more complex conditions such as fractures and burns. They also offer diagnostic services, which are usually not available at retail clinics. Therefore, while retail clinics are a convenient option for basic healthcare needs, urgent care centers provide more comprehensive care when you need immediate attention for more serious, but non-life-threatening conditions.

I did a telehealth visit over video. The visit itself went well but it was confusing when booking it because it made it seem like I was supposed to go to urgent care in person. Communication should be improved on what is expected at the time of appointment.

I was unaware that I the facility changed to urgent care and didn’t require a referral. My 18yo took my younger daughter. I was able to scan her insurance card and talk to them before they arrived. The doctor took care of them and made sure they felt comfortable!

Specifically went to this urgent care based on the information provided that they offered walk in rapid covid tests. I explained I had known exposure with multiple individuals who tested positive and that I was an essential employee licensed through the Department of public health. I asked multiple times for a rapid test to be performed so that I could continue to work and interact with municipal utility supply and the general public. I was denied a rapid test on the basis that those tests are reserved for immunosuppressed patients or those that are terminally ill. I explained that my job is a 24hr emergency service position and I could have direct contact with immunosuppressed and terminally ill indivuals at any given time due to the nature of my career. This seems to be grossly negligent in regards to public safety and limiting the possible exposure of this virus.

Went in today to urgent care, had Dr. Abraham, he was very nice, patient, and informational. The only issue was that the location was hard to find since it had moved. It took awhile to find where the new location was due to the sign being small, and then the directions were not clear, and we had to drive around for a bit before finding the new location.

This is the best urgent care experience

- Verified patient on 9/25

Dr Abraham expected immediate responses when I couldn’t think due to severe shaking. He listened to me only part of the time. I was told I had a UTI when there, but at no time on the call back regarding my blood tests was I told I had a kidney infection. A 2nd medication was added but my urologist said it was not needed. Only when I went to my primary care was I told the kidneys were infected. I was disappointed in my care for the first time at urgent care.

My first time to visit Springfield Clinic's Urgent Care facility. No one likes to go to the doctor but when you need to this clinic would be my recommendation. From booking an appointment online, to checking in, being evaluated and a trip to x-ray, the experience was a package deal of professionalism mixed with a friendly, caring staff. I will return if I have to, hoping that I won't. Thank you!

- Verified patient on 3/4

I ended up having to use the urgent care after I waited for two and a half hours for my primary Dr at Springfield Clinic to return my call, just to tell me that they couldn’t see me. I’m furious with him and told him to find me a new Dr. Which actually I haven’t gotten to see my Dr in over 2 yrs. Just his Nurse Practitioner.

Going to this urgent care was the best experience I have ever had at any other facility. They were caring and friendly. Got me in quick and no long waits anywhere. Will go here again!

My visit to Springfield Clinic urgent Care was a very good experience! Although, Initially I was very nervous about the visit but the kind doctor assured me that she would do all that she could to help me and she put my mind at ease. She even call another doctor's office to see if they would give me farther assistance. Thank you

The doctor was great! The best Urgent Care experience I’ve had in years.

- Verified patient on 5/14

I arrived and was told there would be at least an hour wait was that ok. Computers were down I was ok with that circumstance. After about 45 minutes an emergency patient came to the office. He was taken to an examiner room immediately. Again I was ok with that. If it were me I would like the same treatment. Once I was in an examine room and vitals were taken by the RN I waited for about a 45 minute for the Dr to come in. Both the Dr and the RN apologized that I had such a long wait. I think they were doing what an urgent care office is all about. I would go back to that office with no reservation. Wonderful care with sincere kindness

- Verified patient on 7/11

This was the absolute best prompt/urgent care experience I’ve ever had.
