Priority Urgent Care, Oxford - 278 Oxford Rd
I had been dealing with eye irritation for a couple of days prior to making an appointment. I went online to schedule an in person visit, but I had to really search out appt times, as virtual options were offered first. I waited 30 minutes in the waiting room before being called in by a nurse. She was very friendly, took my vitals, and left. Then I waited another 20 minutes for the provider, who was also friendly but in the room for all of 2 minutes. She diagnosed me then left. Waiting almost an hour for a scheduled appointment was absolutely ridiculous.

Brought my sister in for a strep test as she has a sore throat. Everyone was very friendly and considerate. The testing was quick and very thorough as they decided to do a second swab to send off in case she has a less common form of strep the first test may have missed.  We’re very grateful for the kind staff at this urgent care.

Waterbury HIV Testing

Who should get tested for HIVs?

Anyone who has been sexually active, shared needles, or been exposed to blood from someone who has HIV should consider getting tested. This includes individuals of all ages, genders, and sexual orientations. According to the CDC, it's particularly important for those with multiple sexual partners, men who have sex with men, and individuals who have had other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to get tested for HIV.

Importance of getting tested

Getting tested for HIV is crucial for both personal health and public safety. Early detection can lead to early treatment, which can significantly slow the progression of the disease and improve quality of life. Additionally, knowing one's HIV status can help prevent the spread of the virus to others.

HIV testing options in Waterbury, CT:

Urgent care and walk-in clinics

Urgent care centers such as PhysicianOne Urgent Care in Waterbury and Priority Urgent Care in Oxford provide HIV testing services. These facilities often offer same-day and next-day appointments, which can be booked through Solv's website and mobile app.

Primary care providers

Primary care providers also offer HIV testing. If you have a primary care provider, consider discussing your concerns with them. They can provide a test and guide you through the process.

Free STD testing and community health centers

Community health centers in and around Waterbury offer free or low-cost HIV testing. These centers are a great resource for those without insurance or who are unable to afford testing.

At-home testing

At-home HIV testing kits are also available for purchase online or at a local pharmacy. These kits allow individuals to collect a sample at home and send it to a lab for testing.

Prevalence of HIVs in Waterbury

While specific data for Waterbury is not readily available, New Haven County, where Waterbury is located, has seen a steady number of new HIV diagnoses over the years. The prevalence of HIV in Waterbury is likely reflective of the broader county and state trends.

Risk factors related to HIVs in Waterbury

Risk factors for HIV in Waterbury are similar to those in other parts of the country. These include unprotected sex, multiple sexual partners, men having sex with men, intravenous drug use, and having other STIs.

Other STDs in Waterbury

In addition to HIV, other STIs such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and hepatitis are also prevalent in Waterbury. Just like with HIV, early detection and treatment of these STIs are crucial. Testing for these STIs can often be done at the same time as HIV testing.

HIV Test FAQs

  • Who should get an HIV test?

Everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 should take an HIV test at least once in their lives. Some people are more likely to get HIV and should be tested more regularly. Those who have had sex with an HIV-positive partner, those who inject drugs, sexually active gay men, and those who have unprotected sex are all included. You should get checked every 6-12 months if you have any of these risk factors.

  • How do they test for HIV?

Antibodies created by your body in reaction to the virus are examined in HIV tests. A blood test or a sample of cells obtained from the inside of the cheek can be used to do this. After that, the sample is transported to a lab, where a technician will look for antibodies.

  • How long should I wait to get an HIV test?

It can take a long time for your body to build enough antibodies for an HIV test to detect the illness if you become sick. It may take 3-12 weeks for your blood to contain adequate antibodies. Even if you have HIV, you could have a negative test result during this time.

  • How long will I have to wait for HIV test results in Waterbury?

Because the sample must be sent to a laboratory for investigation, most HIV test results might take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. On the other hand, some Waterbury clinics or doctor's offices may offer rapid HIV testing, which can deliver a diagnosis in as little as 20 minutes. Rapid HIV testing involve a little sample of blood or fluid obtained from the mouth. You'll need a follow-up blood test to confirm the diagnosis if a fast test comes up positive.

  • How much does an HIV test cost?

A variety of factors influence the cost of an HIV test, including the type of test you receive, the location where you are tested, and whether or not you have health insurance. HIV testing may be provided for free or at a low cost by some clinics or health authorities. If you're a college student, you might be able to get free HIV tests through your school.

  • Is HIV testing covered by my insurance?

The majority of insurance coverage cover HIV testing. The Affordable Care Act mandates that all new health plans provide free HIV testing for those aged 15 to 65. If you have any doubts about what is covered under your individual health plan, you can always call your insurance company or go to their website.

  • Where can I get an HIV test in Waterbury?

Many Waterbury health clinics, doctor's offices, and the health department offer HIV testing. Some pharmacies with on-site clinics may also be able to give HIV testing. Even though some clinics accept walk-in appointments, making an appointment ahead of time will save you time and ensure that you receive your test on the same day.

  • Can I get a same-day appointment for HIV testing?

Yes, Solv offers same-day and next-day HIV testing appointments. We collaborate with thousands of healthcare providers across the country to make it easier for everyone to access the medical assistance they require quickly and conveniently. On our website, you can choose a physician near you and make an appointment right now.

  • How can I book an HIV test on Solv?

Simply type "HIV test" and your location into our website's search box. You'll find a list of providers and their available appointment times on the next page. Fill out the form to arrange an appointment at a time and location that is convenient for you. Make certain that your appointment is for "HIV testing."

  • Can I test myself for HIV at home?

Although there are several home HIV tests available, not all of them are accurate or FDA-approved. For a home test, you'll need a swab from the inside of your mouth or a blood sample taken with a finger pricker. If you get a positive result on a home HIV test, you should see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment.
