About Syphilis Testing

Who should get tested for syphilis?

Anyone who is sexually active is at risk for contracting syphilis, but certain groups are at higher risk. These include men who have sex with men, individuals with multiple sexual partners, and people living with HIV. If you fall into one of these categories or have been exposed to a sexual partner who has tested positive for syphilis, it's recommended to get tested. Pregnant women should also be tested for syphilis during their first prenatal visit, as the disease can have severe consequences for the unborn child.

Importance of getting tested

Getting tested for syphilis is crucial because it is a highly infectious disease that can cause serious health problems if left untreated. According to the CDC, syphilis can lead to damage to the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, blood vessels, liver, bones, and joints. Early detection and treatment can prevent these severe outcomes and reduce the spread of the disease to others.

Syphilis testing options in Pensacola, FL:

Urgent care and walk-in clinics

Urgent care and walk-in clinics provide fast and convenient testing services. Quality Urgent Care and Wellness in Pensacola, for example, offers same-day and next-day testing appointments that can be booked through Solv's website and mobile app.

Primary care providers

Primary care providers can also test for syphilis. If you have a regular doctor in Pensacola, consider reaching out to them about getting tested.

Free STD testing and community health centers

For those with limited resources, free STD testing is available at community health centers in Pensacola. These centers often provide comprehensive sexual health services, including syphilis testing.

At-home testing

At-home testing kits are another option. These kits can be ordered online, used in the privacy of your own home, and then sent back to a lab for analysis.

Prevalence of syphilis in Pensacola

Pensacola, located in Escambia County, has seen a rise in syphilis cases over the years, mirroring a national trend. Comparatively, the rate of syphilis in Pensacola is higher than in nearby cities such as Brent, Warrington, and Gulf Breeze, but lower than in some other parts of the country.

Risk factors related to syphilis in Pensacola

Risk factors for syphilis in Pensacola include unprotected sex, having multiple sexual partners, and being a man who has sex with men. Other factors that could contribute to the higher rates of syphilis in Pensacola include lower rates of condom use and limited access to healthcare services in some areas.

Other STDs in Pensacola

In addition to syphilis, other STDs such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV, and hepatitis are also prevalent in Pensacola. The rates of these diseases vary, but like syphilis, they are all preventable with the use of condoms and regular testing.
