Astoria Chlamydia Testing

Who should get tested for chlamydia?

According to the CDC, anyone who is sexually active can get chlamydia. However, the infection is most common among young people, particularly those aged 25 or younger. Women are also more likely to contract chlamydia than men. The CDC recommends annual chlamydia screening for all sexually active women under 25, as well as for older women with risk factors such as new or multiple sex partners. Men who have sex with men should also get tested annually.

Importance of getting tested

Chlamydia is often referred to as a "silent" infection because most people who have it are not aware of it. This is because it typically does not cause symptoms, but it can lead to serious health complications if left untreated. For women, untreated chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, which can lead to infertility. In men, it can cause a condition called nongonococcal urethritis. Regular testing is crucial to detect and treat chlamydia early, preventing these complications.
