Excellent service. Dr Norris is an excellent diagnostician and extremely knowledgeable. He does not hide behind a nursing of administrative staff. Very hands on and its obvious he has 20 + years emergency room experience. This is absolutely a great place which provides quick excellent healthcare. I did not know walk in clinics existed any more. Urgent care in Memphis, TN

Memphis carries one of the highest uninsured rates of any major American city — 14.7 percent of residents lack health coverage, according to U.S. Census data. That figure stems directly from Tennessee's decision not to expand Medicaid under the ACA, leaving tens of thousands of low-income adults in a coverage gap with no path to TennCare. For Memphis's 619,000 residents, walk-in urgent care clinics are a critical safety valve: faster than the ER, lower-cost than a hospital admission, and accessible to both insured and uninsured patients at self-pay rates far below emergency department charges.

When should Memphis residents choose urgent care over the ER?

Emergency rooms treat life-threatening conditions: chest pain, stroke, major trauma, severe breathing difficulty, and uncontrolled bleeding. Everything else — sprains, infections, rashes, fever, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness — is appropriate for urgent care. At Regional One Health and Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare emergency departments, Memphis patients face average wait times that can exceed two hours during flu season and on weekend evenings. Urgent care clinics typically see patients in under an hour, at a fraction of the cost. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, ER visits for non-emergency conditions cost patients an average of three to five times more than the equivalent urgent care visit.

Exceptions: Go to the ER for severe chest pain or pressure, signs of stroke (face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty), high fever with stiff neck, severe abdominal pain, or any condition that is rapidly deteriorating. Regional One Health Level I Trauma Center on Jackson Avenue handles the most critical Memphis cases.

What do urgent care clinics in Memphis treat?

Memphis walk-in clinics provide on-site diagnostics and treatment for a wide range of adult and pediatric conditions. Services include rapid strep, flu A/B, COVID-19, and RSV testing; X-rays for fractures and sprains; wound care and laceration repair; ear, sinus, and respiratory infections; UTIs; pink eye; skin conditions including contact dermatitis and impetigo; occupational injury evaluation; and DOT and sports physicals. The city's large food service, logistics, and healthcare workforce drives steady demand for occupational health services at walk-in clinics near Midtown, East Memphis, and the industrial east side. Which urgent care providers operate in Memphis?

Three networks anchor Memphis's urgent care landscape. AFC Urgent Care maintains multiple Memphis-area locations with extended hours across Midtown, East Memphis, and Germantown, making it one of the most accessible networks for both insured and self-pay patients. Baptist Walk-In Care, affiliated with Baptist Memorial Health Care, serves patients across the Baptist hospital network's footprint in the greater Memphis area. Methodist Express Clinics, part of Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, offer walk-in services with electronic health record integration into the broader Methodist system — useful for patients with Methodist primary care relationships. Fast Pace Health operates locations in Germantown and surrounding suburbs. Solv's Memphis urgent care directory shows current wait times and accepts online check-ins at participating clinics.

Does urgent care in Memphis accept TennCare?

TennCare — Tennessee's Medicaid program — covers approximately 1.4 million Tennesseans statewide, primarily children, pregnant adults, and people with qualifying disabilities. Because Tennessee has not expanded Medicaid under the ACA, working-age adults without dependents do not qualify for TennCare regardless of income. According to the Tennessee Justice Center1, this leaves an estimated 82,000 Tennesseans in a coverage gap. In Memphis specifically, Church Health's MEMPHIS Plan was created to bridge this gap: it provides access to primary and specialty care for adults earning under 200 percent of the federal poverty level (up to approximately $31,300 for an individual as of 2025) who do not qualify for TennCare. For urgent care specifically, AFC Urgent Care and Baptist Walk-In Care both accept TennCare for eligible enrollees.

Uninsured Memphis residents can access urgent care at self-pay rates, which most clinics publish transparently. A standard urgent care visit typically costs $100–$175 out of pocket — significantly less than an ER visit, which averages $1,000 to $2,000 for a non-emergency presentation in Tennessee.

What seasonal and environmental health issues affect Memphians?

Memphis sits at the convergence of three major river systems and experiences a humid subtropical climate that drives distinct health seasons. According to the Tennessee Department of Health2, Shelby County sees above-average influenza activity from November through March, with school-age children and elderly residents most affected. Summer heat in the Mississippi Delta climate — Memphis averages 45 days per year above 90°F — drives heat exhaustion and dehydration visits, particularly among outdoor workers in construction, agriculture, and logistics. Spring and fall bring Mississippi River valley pollen that triggers seasonal allergic rhinitis and asthma exacerbations. The Shelby County Health Department also tracks West Nile virus activity in summer, given Memphis's mosquito burden near the river bottoms.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts3, Memphis had an estimated population of 619,088 as of 2023, with a median household income of approximately $42,000 — well below the national median — reinforcing the economic importance of affordable urgent care alternatives to the ER.

Urgent Care FAQs

  • Does urgent care in Memphis accept TennCare?

Yes. AFC Urgent Care and Baptist Walk-In Care accept TennCare (Tennessee Medicaid) for eligible enrollees, primarily children, pregnant adults, and people with qualifying disabilities. Because Tennessee has not expanded Medicaid, many working-age adults do not qualify for TennCare. Uninsured Memphians can access self-pay rates at most urgent care clinics — typically $100–$175 per visit.
  • What if I'm uninsured in Memphis — can I still use urgent care?

Yes. Most Memphis urgent care clinics offer transparent self-pay pricing, typically $100–$175 for a standard visit — far less than a Memphis ER visit averaging $1,000 to $2,000 for non-emergency care. If you are uninsured and earn under 200% of the federal poverty level, the Church Health MEMPHIS Plan provides affordable access to primary care as well.
  • How long are wait times at urgent care in Memphis?

Memphis urgent care clinics typically see patients within 20 to 60 minutes. Using Solv's online check-in to reserve your spot before you leave reduces wait time significantly. Memphis ERs at Regional One Health and Methodist Le Bonheur can run two to four hours during flu season and weekend evenings — making urgent care the faster and less expensive option for non-emergencies.
  • When should I go to the ER instead of urgent care in Memphis?

Go to the ER for chest pain, signs of stroke (face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty), severe breathing difficulty, major trauma, loss of consciousness, or any rapidly worsening condition. Regional One Health Level I Trauma Center handles the most critical Memphis emergencies. For everything else — infections, sprains, fever, minor injuries — urgent care is appropriate.
  • Are urgent care clinics in Memphis open on weekends?

Yes. AFC Urgent Care, Baptist Walk-In Care, and Fast Pace Health all offer weekend hours at Memphis-area locations. Many are open Saturday and Sunday, typically 8 AM to 5 PM or later. Use Solv to check specific weekend hours and real-time wait times at your nearest Memphis urgent care clinic before heading in.
  • Can I get a strep or flu test at urgent care in Memphis?

Yes. Rapid strep, flu A/B, COVID-19, and RSV tests are available at most Memphis urgent care clinics with results in 10–20 minutes. Walk in without an appointment or use Solv to check in online. Memphis sees above-average flu activity from November through March, so testing is especially valuable during peak respiratory season.
  • Is there urgent care in East Memphis or Germantown near Memphis?

Yes. AFC Urgent Care and Fast Pace Health have locations serving East Memphis and Germantown. Baptist Walk-In Care also operates near the Baptist Memorial Hospital campus. Use Solv to find the closest clinic to your East Memphis or Germantown address with current wait times.
