Getting Urgent Care in Gainesville, FL

What is urgent care?

Urgent care is a category of walk-in clinic focused on the delivery of ambulatory care in a dedicated medical facility outside of a traditional emergency room. Urgent care centers primarily treat injuries or illnesses requiring immediate care, but not serious enough to require an ER visit. These centers cover a broad spectrum of non-life-threatening conditions and can often perform minor procedures like stitches or splinting a broken bone. They are designed to provide fast, accessible, and affordable care for situations that are urgent, but not life-threatening.

Common services and reasons for visit

Urgent care centers in Gainesville, FL offer a wide range of services for various health issues. These include but are not limited to:

  • Minor burns or injuries
  • Sprains and strains
  • Cuts and lacerations requiring stitches
  • Skin rashes and infections
  • Severe colds or flu
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Dehydration requiring IV hydration
  • Minor fractures and dislocations
  • Diagnostic services, including X-rays and laboratory tests

These centers are typically open during evenings and weekends, making them a convenient option for non-emergency situations that can't wait for a doctor's appointment.

Types of healthcare providers

Urgent care centers are staffed by a team of healthcare providers with diverse qualifications and roles. Here are the types of providers you might encounter during your visit:

  • Physicians: These are medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who have completed medical school, residency training, and are licensed to practice medicine. They diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medication, and may perform minor procedures.
  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs): NPs are registered nurses with advanced training and education, often a master's degree or higher. They can diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medication, and may perform certain procedures under the supervision of a physician.
  • Physician Assistants (PAs): PAs are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. They practice medicine on healthcare teams with physicians and other providers.
  • Registered Nurses (RNs): RNs provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.
  • Radiologic Technologists: These professionals perform diagnostic imaging examinations, such as X-rays, on patients.
  • Medical Assistants: They perform routine tasks and procedures such as measuring patients' vital signs, administering medications and injections, recording information in medical records, and preparing and handling medical instruments and supplies.

Each of these providers plays a crucial role in ensuring that patients receive comprehensive, timely, and appropriate

When to go to an urgent care

Urgent care centers are designed to provide immediate, non-emergency healthcare services. They are an excellent option when you have a minor injury or illness that needs prompt attention, but isn't life-threatening. Common reasons to visit an urgent care center in Gainesville, FL, include minor fractures, sprains, burns, cuts requiring stitches, fever, flu-like symptoms, urinary tract infections, or sudden rashes. Urgent care centers typically offer extended hours, including evenings and weekends, making them a convenient choice when your primary care doctor is unavailable.

Urgent care vs emergency room (ER)

While both urgent care centers and emergency rooms provide immediate medical care, they serve different purposes. ERs are equipped to handle life-threatening conditions such as severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe burns, or major trauma. Urgent care centers, on the other hand, handle non-life-threatening conditions that still require prompt attention. Visiting an ER for a minor ailment can result in longer wait times and higher medical costs compared to an urgent care center. However, if you believe your condition is life-threatening, always go to the ER or call 911.

Urgent care vs primary care

Primary care providers are your go-to for routine check-ups, preventive care, and managing chronic conditions. They typically have a comprehensive understanding of your health history. Urgent care centers, however, are ideal for immediate medical needs that can't wait for a scheduled appointment with your primary care provider. While primary care providers offer continuity of care, urgent care centers provide convenience and immediate attention. It's important to note that urgent care is not a substitute for primary care, but rather a complement for times when immediate care is needed.

Urgent care vs retail clinic

Retail clinics, often found in pharmacies or supermarkets, provide care for simple conditions like minor infections, allergies, and common vaccinations. Urgent care centers offer a broader range of services, including diagnostic tests, stitches, and treatment for more complex conditions like fractures or burns. While both offer walk-in appointments, urgent care centers generally have extended hours and can handle a wider variety of health issues. If your condition is simple and straightforward, a retail clinic may suffice. For more complex or serious issues, an urgent care center in Gainesville, FL, would be a more suitable choice.

What to expect with your visit

When seeking urgent care in Gainesville, FL, you can expect a streamlined process designed to make your healthcare experience as smooth as possible. From preparing for your visit to the actual appointment and follow-up care, each step is designed with your convenience and health in mind. Let's walk through what you can expect at each stage of your urgent care visit.

Preparing for your visit

Before your visit to an urgent care center, it's important to gather all necessary information and items to ensure a successful visit. This includes:

  • Your photo ID
  • Insurance card
  • List of current medications
  • Any relevant medical history

Having these items ready will help the healthcare providers better understand your health history and provide the most effective care. If you're experiencing symptoms, it may also be helpful to write them down along with any questions you have to discuss during your visit.

During your visit

During your urgent care visit, you'll first check in at the front desk, where you'll provide your ID, insurance information, and reason for your visit. You'll then be seen by a healthcare provider who will assess your condition, discuss your symptoms, and determine the best course of treatment. This could include medication, lab tests, or even x-rays. Remember, urgent care centers are equipped to handle non-life-threatening conditions, but for severe symptoms or emergencies, it's best to go to the nearest emergency room.

Follow-up care and communication

After your visit, you may receive instructions for follow-up care. This could include taking prescribed medication, scheduling a follow-up appointment, or seeking further treatment from a specialist. It's important to follow these instructions to ensure your health and recovery. Most urgent care centers also have systems in place for communication after your visit, such as phone calls or online portals, so you can ask questions or report any changes in your condition.

Cost and insurance details

Understanding the cost of urgent care is important. On average, an urgent care visit can cost between $71 and $125 for basic care, with additional costs for services like shots, x-rays, and labs. This is significantly less than a comparable emergency room visit, which averages around $1,318. Most urgent care centers in Gainesville accept insurance, as well as both Medicare and Medicaid. However, it's always a good idea to check with the center beforehand to understand what your out-of-pocket costs may be.

  • What is urgent care?

Urgent care are available to assist patients that are looking for immediate, convenient medical care. In that manner, they are similar to an emergency room. The difference, however, is that ERs are meant to treat major, life-threatening injuries and illnesses while urgent care centers manage life’s minor bruises and bumps. In simple terms, an urgent care is seen as a walk-in health center that focuses in offering non-emergent health care conditions, including the treatment of the typical illnesses and injuries such as fractures and sprains, cuts and burns, scrapes, stings and bites, flu and cold symptoms, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, and much more. Most urgent care facilities offer both diagnostic and preventive care such as well visits, immunizations, STD testing and annual physicals. For regular visits and check-ups on these clinics, you should expect to pay between $20 and $100. The good thing is that most urgent care clinics will accept major PPOs and insurance cover, Medicare, as well as self-pay in the form of credit cards or cash. Urgent care clinics are located in most parts of the country in various regions to offset emergency room visits and provide a gap in healthcare services. They take patients during all hours of operations, which offer a significant convenience to most people who have and continue to undergo the need for sudden and immediate medical attention.

Recent Urgent Care Reviews (20)

This is the 3rd time I have been to this urgent care and the care just keeps getting better. Everyone from the time I checked in until the time I left provided exceptional care. The front desk staff was kind and professional, the X-ray technician was super nice and took excellent care of me. The nurse who triaged me was exceptional and the nurse practitioner was awesome with his level of care. Sucks feeling bad but these folks did the very best they could to make the situation as pleasant as possible.

Another amazing experience. I have been to this location several times lately with our family of 5. We had one of the kiddos with a broken arm to others not feeling well and each time everyone is so great. Especially Andrew, the med tech that helped us. He is so friendly and great with kids. A good bedside manner goes a long way. We really appreciate everything, Hardly no wait time tonight and we were in and out in 30 min. I will not go anywhere else for my urgent care needs. They are the best. Thank you again.

I have been using restore urgent care for the past 4 years, regarding any medical issues I have had. The staff is incredible, starting at the front desk where Nicole does a phenomenal job, dealing with all the patients. She is extremely friendly and professional. Next is Trish, who is the best Nurse Practitioner I have ever met. She always makes the proper diagnosis, and prescribes what ever is necessary to cure my ailments. Recently, I’ve had the pleasure of being treated and helped by Yasmina, who is an outstanding Physicians Assistant. There is one problem I’ve noticed in recent visits. The staff is overwhelmed with the amount of patients coming in. I realize when Covid-19 broke out, people were reluctant to visit a hospital or any medical facility. Little by little people started visiting these facilities, because they needed care. Most were making appointments, and felt comfortable coming in to Urgent Care, especially, with the sanitizing of the facility, masks required, and terrific spacing of the chairs in the waiting room. Now, that more and more patients are coming in for care, in my opinion, changes have to be made to accommodate everyone. I suggest that more staff be hired. You need more than one NP and one PA on duty at all times. Currently, patients can make an appointment, but with all the walk in traffic, it is virtually impossible to handle the work load. Thank you for reading this survey.

I have used many other urgent care’s in my local area over the years and refuse to go back to any one of them. I am a critical care nurse I was referred by a nurse and my experience was wonderful. Everyone was friendly, helpful and professional but in a very warm caring way. I will continue to use this facility and refer everyone I know there. The Nurse Practitioner Mary was phenomenal! I would love to have her as a primary. As a nurse I am more critical of healthcare providers and this clinic exceeded all my expectations and I was so very pleasantly surprised. We all know the turn health care has taken secondary to insurance companies interference and manipulation of the system but some how this clinic provides 5 star service and actually care about the patient. The women at the reception desk were so patient walking me thru the sign in registration and the kindness continued with every person I came in contact with during my appointment. I can’t recommend them highly enough. That is where I will go, where I will send my husband, son and anyone I care for.

After trying 4 other urgent cares with in the area, I accidentally ended up here. I didn’t know about it and it didn’t show up on Google. I was looking to get a vivid test because, as we know, there are none available for purchase anywhere in the area. ALL of the other places were busy yes but all were rude and unhelpful. I was greeted by three friendly and helpful people at the front desk. It was busy but I was assured that they would get to me as soon as they could. Everyone from intake to the nurse and physician were amazingly professional. More importantly, they were kind helpful and genuinely concerned for my welfare. I will definitely utilize this location again should the need arise.

It’s typically hard to describe an urgent care visit as wonderful, AND my visit was. I didn’t have to wait long despite the facility being super busy. I was treated kindly, communicated with every step of the way. Every health care provider was vey competent and went above and beyond! Especially Mark W. PA who tested me thoroughly and listened to my concerns. I’ve been to Guidewell before and every experience and staff member has been impressionable, above and beyond. And I love the fact that they have diagnostics and work ups beyond what most walk in clinics usually provides. It saves me a trip to the emergency room when not needed. Clean, Fast, Friendly, Efficient, Compassionate and Complete! Totally recommend it! ❤️👍🏻🙌🏻

This only grades up to 5 stars. From arriving to checking in to meeting with the doctor I would have to give them a 10-20 star review. Anyone who goes to an Urgent Care clinic has to or should know that there's always going to be a wait even with an appointment. Sometimes caring for a patient takes longer than anticipated. As long as they take care of me in the same manner I am fine with waiting. The waiting wasn't as long as I thought that it would be with or without an appointment. The quality of care is unsurpassed with any other clinic. All the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. I just can't say enough of great things about this clinic.

Came here for a foot fracture on a Saturday. I’m a physician and knew I would get care from well trained ER physicians here whereas most urgent care centers are staffed by PAs or nurse practitioners with varying degrees of training/experience and have had many suboptimal experiences with physician extenders in the past. I received efficient, high quality care including radiology services. My wife had seen Dr Consentino previously and she was great as was the nurse Devin who checked me in and multiple other staff members (radiology tech, different nurse who checked me out, waiting room staff). I love the billing transparency (they gave me an accurate estimate by phone when I called beforehand to ensure they had radiology services) and there’s basically a “menu” with prices out front and outlines what services are included. Very clean. The broken American health care system would be much better if all facilities operated like this.

I broke my ankle Saturday afternoon. Finding in-network urgent care with x-ray capability on the weekend turned out to be a very complex task. Guidewell was a half hour away but was the only one that could help me. I'm glad I chose them and would make the trip again if I need urgent care in the future. The waiting room was clean, masks were required, staff was very friendly and compassionate, and my wait-time was less than 30 min (compared to 3-4 hours at other urgent cares). They did more to help me during that short visit (xrays, pain prescription, cast, and a referral!) than my primary care provider and orthopedic clinic did over the next 3 days combined. Thank you to the entire team at Ocoee Guidewell.

The doctor here is honestly amazing, he listens, cares and takes his time with his patients. After trying to find a good doctor I’m glad I finally found a great one. I had been to a few different doctors and I couldn’t find the right treatment for me. Instead of rushing me out he listened and now I’m finally getting my health back. He found the right treatment for me. One of the other great parts is they also offer cosmetic treatments here like Botox, so I can fix my health and feel more confident by a doctor I can trust! The staff was also very friendly and helpful. He is so knowledgeable that he even teaches students. I highly recommend lifetime family urgent care!

Being from a different state, I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm used to very long wait times in urgent care facilities but this was not the case here. I actually got in without 5 minutes of my appointment time. Everyone was very nice and concerned about my comfort. When the attending doctor decided that I needed to go to the hospital they refunded my co-pay. I don't think that would have happened where I'm from. Now that I will be living in Florida if I should need to go to urgent care again this one will be my first choice.

This was my first visit to Coastal Urgent Care as I'm usually seen by my primary care provider. However, my doctor could not get me in for a few days and as bad as I was feeling I could not wait for an appointment. I was really unsure of what to expect from a walk-in clinic. I was seen by Ms. Shannon Chambers, ARNP. She treated me with nothing but respect from the moment I met her. I could tell right away by how she listened to my concerns that she really cares about providing the best available care for her patients. The entire staff deserve kudos for all the hard work they put in each and every day. If I ever need to go to a walk-in clinic this is where I'll come in the future. I highly recommend Coastal Urgent Care for your medical needs.

Best urgent care I have ever visited! The receptionist, nurse and physician assistant were all very caring, attentive, and professional. I stopped there after cutting my finger on my way back home to Tallahassee from St. Augustine. PA Otero was caring and gentle - he stitched me up and got me on my way home in under an hour!! I would have sat in an urgent care in Tallahassee for hours! I highly recommend this establishment. I only wish I lived closer. Thanks to all of you for taking great care of me!

I have only had to use this facility maybe 4 times since moving here 14yrars ago. Thank goodness I wasn't sick very often and you could call your family doctor to get an appointment. Well those days are gone. I was scheduled to go to yulee late afternoon for my covid vaccine but had had a terrible headache, diarrhea, but no fever. Kept calling the Millennium group to ask if I could still get my vaccine and I didn't hear back until after my time for shot. When they finally called back they said to go to urgent care on 8th street so I called and got an appointment for 5:15 which was marvelous. It was just like I remembered, wonderful doctor, extremely clean. And front office girls were extremely friendly. I missed out on getting my vaccine but I got tested for covid and it was negative thank goodness. I will definitely return to this facility.

Today was my third trip in, 2nd follow up after my initial visit. The wait time wasn’t great but it’s to be expected as a walk-in at urgent care. What really stands out to me is every person I came into contact with was so nice and helpful and genuinely interested in how I was feeling and doing. I felt heard. Those that helped on my precious two visits remembered me and were also nice and happy to see me and hear I was doing well. I am so thankful for how pleasantly my experiences went and how comfortable everyone made me feel, despite me having an issue that I was embarrassed and uncomfortable about.

My husband and I had an excellent experience today. We went for a COVID antibody test and they were able to take us together. There was no wait and the staff checking us in was very efficient. Every aspect of our experience today was excellent, from the nurses to the blood draws to the time spent with the doctor. I think Guidewell is the BEST urgent care facility in the area!!! Dr. Maxwell is excellent. He spent a lot of time with us and answered every question we had regarding vaccines, therapeutics, antibodies, etc. Again, they’re the best urgent care in the area.

GuideWell is a new urgent care facility in the area, but make no mistake they are on a different level than any other urgent care I’ve been to before. They far exceeded my expectations. From the cleanliness of the facility to the check in process, to the large board on the lobby with a list of prices for different services ( which they provide an extensive list of services and testing) to the wait time to receive medical care it was just easy and not frustrating. The entire staff is very professional and friendly. Everyone introduced themselves by their name and the nurses and PCCs that took care of me were simply awesome. Everything was explained in detail and they checked on me regularly. Their bedside manner is such a welcome change from many places these days. Dr. Tulsiak was very patient, caring and compassionate. Thank you to all that helped in my care from the girls at the front desk to the Radiologist to Stephanie, Charla, Wayne, and Josh. If I have a need to receive medical care in the future I will definitely come back to GuideWell vs a busy hospital ER.

I prefer this particular GuideWell facility over any other urgent care in my area. I literally drive approximately 25 to 30 minutes to get to this urgent care when I have quite a few urgent cares within 10 minutes of my home. The staff is so welcoming; friendly and professional. They always seem like they genuinely care. Stephanie, the triage nurse, has taken care of me at least twice and she’s always the sweetest person. Dr. Faza is a kind gentleman who explained everything and made me feel at ease. Great bedside manner.

My nurse was great she was nice patient and addressed all my concerns and didn't hurt me when giving shot or swabs it was greatly appreciated. The doc was Katie she is the best doc I wish she was my primary she was patient, though, kind she knew what she was talking about she didn't rush she checked everything. Even the girls in the front they were nice and they didn't act all scevey because I was sick. They made me feel comfortable. Dr urgent care on us highway 19 is the place to go everything just walk in no apt needed it was very convenient. I recommend them to everyone.

I was from out of town and had attempted to get care at other urgent care facilities with no success. From the moment I called to inquire about the services offered, the staff was extremely friendly and attentive to my needs. The facility was clean and I felt safe especially during these uncertain times. I was able to check in and have a file started immediately and accepted my passport as ID without hesitation. The wait, although not immediate treatment, was very reasonable for the reason for my visit. I would highly recommend this facility to anyone who needs care not requiring a visit to the emergency room.
