  • This move puts pressure on states to expand their vaccine eligibility guidelines.
  • Currently, 37 out of 50 states have made vaccine appointments available to the general population.
  • Each state is independently managing its vaccine distribution and has its own date for universal eligibility.
  • The article provides detailed information on eligibility dates, vaccination rates, and how to find a vaccine location in each state.

UPDATE: President Joe Biden announced Tuesday, April 6 that states should open COVID-19 vaccine appointments to all U.S. adults by April 19, moving up his original deadline by nearly two weeks. While the deadline is voluntary, it does apply public pressure to states that haven’t already expanded their eligibility guidelines. As of this writing, 37 of 50 states have opened vaccine appointments to the general population.

President Biden’s announcement that all Americans 16 and older will become eligible for the vaccine on May 1, 2021 prompted many states to accelerate their vaccine distribution plans. With the deadline only a month away, many adults will be able to receive their vaccine in a matter of weeks. In fact, 90% of Americans 16 and older will be eligible for the vaccine by April 19.

While federal guidance puts the vaccine within reach of all American adults May 1, each state is conducting its own distribution and has chosen the date on which all individuals aged 16 and older will become eligible for the vaccine.
