Scheduled an online appointment with Solvhealth and the available appt. Was at 11am, I was seen at 12.30pm. What’s the purpose of making an appointment online , making the patient wait an hour n a half?

I am always appreciative of the connivence this office offers.   Today I had a gentleman doctor and I thought although very upbeat and friendly, I was uncomfortable with the religious questions.  I personally believe there is a time and place, at this appointment was not it.  One, I didn’t feel well and the appointment should have stayed about that.  Two, he is  unaware of my circumstances and that was not the place.  I heard how he had converted, he asked me if I did, and it was very uncomfortable because again he had no idea of my circumstances A suggestion to possibly keep the appointment chatter on a lighter note. People coming in don’t feel well to begin with, any kind of heavy conversation may lead to some awkwardness (and it absolutely did).   Faith, and religion should be off the table for light conversation   Thank you.

Urgent care
I would have appreciated assistance in using the mobile check in or availability of another check in option as using my phone and taking ID photos and such was challenging with the injury for which I was seeking care.  I would recommend the provider who treated my injury. Very friendly, attentive, and explained the steps in treatment.

Urgent Care in Boston, MA

Boston is one of America's oldest cities and a national center for medicine, research, and education. Home to world-renowned academic medical centers including Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston has more hospital resources per capita than nearly any other major U.S. city. Yet for non-emergency needs, urgent care clinics offer faster, more accessible, and lower-cost care than the teaching hospital emergency rooms that define the city's healthcare landscape.

When to Use Urgent Care vs. the ER

Urgent care in Boston is appropriate for conditions that need prompt attention but are not immediately life-threatening. These include upper respiratory infections, strep throat, ear infections, UTIs, flu, sinus infections, minor cuts and sprains, skin conditions, and school or sports physicals. Emergency rooms — including the busy Level I trauma centers at Mass General and Brigham and Women's — are better suited for chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, major trauma, or any condition requiring immediate hospitalization.

Using urgent care for the right conditions avoids long waits at academic medical center ERs, where complex cases take clinical priority and patients with minor conditions can wait several hours.

What Boston Urgent Care Clinics Treat

Boston urgent care clinics handle a broad range of conditions for patients of all ages. Commonly available services include illness evaluations, flu and COVID-19 testing, rapid strep testing, urinalysis, X-rays, wound care, and occupational health services. On-site labs allow for fast results without a separate referral or lab visit.

If you need a DOT physical in Boston or a sports physical in Boston, multiple urgent care locations across Greater Boston offer these services.

Respiratory Season and Seasonal Health

Boston's cold winters and dense population create elevated respiratory illness risk from fall through spring. According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, influenza activity in Massachusetts typically peaks between December and February and can remain elevated through March.2 Urgent care clinics play a critical role during this period, offering rapid flu testing, same-day treatment, and walk-in availability without the waits associated with primary care or hospital ERs.

Strep throat is also prevalent during fall and winter months, particularly among school-age children and college students given Boston's high concentration of universities. Urgent care clinics can perform rapid strep tests and prescribe antibiotics on the same visit when appropriate.

Population and Geographic Access

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Boston proper has a population of approximately 675,000, while the Greater Boston metro area is home to more than 4.8 million people.5 The metro spans communities from Cambridge and Somerville to Newton, Brookline, Quincy, and the North and South Shores. Urgent care locations are distributed across neighborhoods including Back Bay, South End, Fenway, Jamaica Plain, Charlestown, and throughout the inner suburbs.

Boston's density means most residents are within a short distance of multiple clinic options. Online check-in and real-time wait time tools are especially useful for planning around Boston's traffic, weather, and parking constraints.

Insurance and MassHealth

Most Boston-area urgent care clinics accept major commercial insurance plans and Medicare. Many also accept MassHealth — Massachusetts's Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program — for eligible residents.3 MassHealth provides coverage to low-income adults, children, pregnant women, seniors, and people with disabilities in the Commonwealth.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, Massachusetts has one of the lowest uninsured rates in the country, owing in part to the state's longstanding universal coverage law.4 Even so, patients enrolled in MassHealth should confirm clinic participation before visiting, as plan acceptance varies by location and managed care plan.

Urgent Care FAQs

  • How long is the wait at urgent care in Boston?

Wait times at Boston urgent care clinics vary by location, time of day, and patient volume. Early weekday mornings tend to be the least busy, while evenings and weekends — particularly during winter respiratory illness season — can see higher demand. Many clinics offer online check-in or display real-time estimated wait times, which can help you plan your visit and minimize time at the clinic.
  • Does Boston urgent care accept MassHealth (Massachusetts Medicaid)?

Many urgent care clinics in the Greater Boston area accept MassHealth, Massachusetts's Medicaid and CHIP program for low-income adults, children, pregnant women, and people with disabilities. Acceptance varies by location and managed care plan. Patients enrolled in MassHealth should confirm the clinic participates with their specific plan before visiting. Solv displays insurance information for many listed clinics.
  • Are there 24-hour or after-hours urgent care clinics in Boston?

Some urgent care clinics in Boston and the surrounding metro offer extended or late-night hours, particularly in high-density areas like Back Bay, the Fenway, and inner suburbs like Cambridge and Brookline. Hours vary by location and day of week. Checking current hours and real-time availability online before heading out is the best way to confirm a clinic is open.
  • What is the difference between urgent care and the ER in Boston?

Urgent care clinics treat non-life-threatening conditions such as colds, flu, strep throat, ear infections, UTIs, minor cuts, sprains, and rashes. Emergency rooms — including the Level I trauma centers at Mass General, Brigham and Women's, and Boston Medical Center — should be used for chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, severe trauma, or any potentially life-threatening condition. When in doubt, call 911 or go to the nearest ER.
  • Can urgent care test and treat strep throat in Boston?

Yes. Urgent care clinics in Boston can perform rapid strep tests and provide same-day treatment, including antibiotic prescriptions when appropriate. Rapid results are typically available within 15–20 minutes. Strep throat is common in Boston, particularly during fall and winter months and among the city's large student population. Walk-in visits are available at most urgent care locations without a prior appointment.
  • What insurance plans do Boston urgent care clinics accept?

Most Boston-area urgent care clinics accept major commercial insurance including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Tufts Health Plan, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and Harvard Pilgrim. Many locations also accept Medicare and MassHealth (Massachusetts Medicaid). Coverage varies by clinic, so confirming your plan is accepted before visiting is recommended. Solv displays insurance acceptance for many listed clinics.
  • Is there urgent care in Cambridge or Somerville near Boston?

Yes. Multiple urgent care clinics serve Cambridge, Somerville, and other inner-ring communities adjacent to Boston. These locations are convenient for residents near Harvard, MIT, Tufts, and other universities, as well as commuters traveling between Boston and the northern and western suburbs.
