What is urgent care?

Urgent care is a category of walk-in clinic focused on the delivery of immediate, non-life-threatening care in a dedicated medical facility outside of a traditional emergency room. Urgent care centers primarily treat injuries or illnesses requiring immediate care but not serious enough to require an ER visit. They are equipped to provide quick access to healthcare, often with extended hours for those unpredictable health needs that occur outside regular office hours.

Common services and reasons for visit

Urgent care centers in Toledo, OH, offer a wide range of services for various health issues. These include but are not limited to:

  • Minor fractures and sprains: Urgent care centers are equipped with X-ray machines to diagnose and treat minor fractures and sprains.
  • Respiratory infections: Conditions such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and the common cold can be treated at urgent care.
  • Skin conditions: Urgent care can treat a variety of skin conditions, including rashes, poison ivy, and minor burns.
  • Stomach issues: Patients with non-life-threatening stomach issues such as food poisoning, constipation, or minor abdominal pain can seek treatment at urgent care.
  • Preventive care: Many urgent care centers also offer preventive care services such as vaccinations, flu shots, and routine physical exams.

Types of healthcare providers

Urgent care centers in Toledo, OH, are staffed by a variety of healthcare providers, each playing a crucial role in patient care. Here are some of the healthcare providers you might encounter:

  • Physicians: These are medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who diagnose and treat diseases, prescribe medication, and may perform minor procedures. They have completed medical school and residency training.
  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs): NPs are registered nurses with advanced training and education, often at the master's level. They can diagnose and treat diseases, prescribe medication, and perform some minor procedures.
  • Physician Assistants (PAs): PAs are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. They train in a model similar to physicians, focusing on general medicine.
  • Registered Nurses (RNs): RNs provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients about health conditions, and offer advice and emotional support to patients and their families. They have completed a nursing program and have passed a national licensing examination.
  • Medical Assistants (MAs): MAs perform routine clinical and administrative tasks to keep the offices of physicians and other health practitioners running smoothly. Their duties vary with the location, specialty, and size of the practice.

When to go to an urgent care

Urgent care centers are designed to provide immediate, non-life-threatening care for minor injuries and illnesses when your primary care physician is unavailable. These facilities are equipped to handle conditions such as minor fractures, sprains, burns, respiratory infections, allergic reactions, and urinary tract infections. They also offer services like lab tests, X-rays, and vaccinations. If you're in Toledo, OH and your condition isn’t severe but needs immediate attention, an urgent care center can be a convenient and cost-effective choice.

Urgent care vs emergency room (ER)

While both ERs and urgent care centers provide immediate care, they serve different purposes. ERs are equipped to handle life-threatening emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, severe burns, or major trauma. Urgent care centers, on the other hand, are ideal for minor injuries and illnesses that can't wait for a primary care appointment but aren't severe enough for the ER. Additionally, urgent care centers often have shorter wait times and lower costs compared to ERs. If your condition is serious or life-threatening, you should go to an ER. Otherwise, an urgent care center in Toledo, OH can provide the care you need.

Urgent care vs primary care

Primary care physicians are your go-to for regular check-ups, preventive care, and managing chronic conditions. They know your health history and can provide personalized care. However, they may not be available for immediate needs or after-hours care. Urgent care centers fill this gap by offering immediate care for non-life-threatening conditions when your primary care doctor isn't available. They don't replace the role of your primary care physician, but they can provide timely care when you need it most.

Urgent care vs retail clinic

Retail clinics, often found in pharmacies or supermarkets, provide care for very basic illnesses and preventive services. They are typically staffed by nurse practitioners or physician assistants and are a good option for simple health needs like flu shots, minor infections, or health screenings. Urgent care centers, however, can handle a broader range of conditions, including minor fractures, burns, and respiratory infections. They also offer more advanced services like X-rays and lab tests. If your condition is beyond the scope of a retail clinic, an urgent care center in Toledo, OH can provide the level of care you need.

I had an appt at 10:52 upon arrival I called the designated phone number for Covid testing, was told I needed to go down the street to urgent care because the time I had they don’t schedule like that. I had a confirmation email from compu net at the place I arrived at I Beavercreek. I went to the urgent care place and was told they would have to charge me if I wanted to go there and do not schedule. I went back to Compu Net and called designated number and she again said I wasn’t scheduled. I read her my confirmation and she stated she had my order from the doctor but no appt. after a few chats back and forth, she would squeeze me in. I did get tested. But obviously something is wrong with the systems or employees are overwhelmed. The employee giving the test was very nice and we spoke of the issue. Not blaming her. If it is a system problem it must be fixed.

Positive.professional prefer this urgent care in Kent rather than an ER if I can avoid it. I was here at this facility in January when I came in for a sinus infection/ flu symptoms tested for covid 19. I was called the next day with positive results. Three days later couldn’t breath well so went by ambulance to Uhpmc admitted diagnosis covid spike pneumonia. University Hospital took great care of me. 7 days later , discharged.I survived covid pneumonia! I am so thankful for the staff here at urgent care Kent and Dr Christian Jones who had the knowledge and took time to ask questions and determined I needed that covid test. It prepared me for what to expect. Thank you !

I called my doctors office because I thought I may have scabies. They said they had no openings and told me to go to the urgent care center down the hall. The doctor there said she wasn’t sure if it was scabies and told me I should go to a dermatologist. She did not recommend one.The last time I required a derm appointment it took SIX MONTHS To get in. This seems to me to be just passing the buck. She called in a prescription for me, but when I went to pick it up it wasn’t written correctly so they couldn’t give it to me.They were waiting for her respond to their call. What a waste of time.

This is the best urgent care I've ever been to; I wish I could make them my primary doctor!;) Laura, Angel, Debbie and the gentleman (whose name escapes me) are incredibly friendly and professional. The nurses and doc knew I was self pay and they went out of their way to keep things as low cost as possible with prescriptions. I've been here many times and it's always a pleasant experience, even while I'm dog-sick. Your staff is awesome. Thank you for your time and thank you for helping me! P.S. Check-in was convenient; there was no wait time and Laura and the others have excellent bedside manner. Would recommend!

This place was amazing-my son and husband have went and had great experience here so I needed an urgent appointment today and got in but the staff made it the best and easiest experience! I am so grateful they seen me right away but also because they talked to me about everything and listened and didn’t just ‘routinely’ see me as another case(or make me feel like I was crazy trying to explain my symptoms. I will always recommend them and even wish I had them as a family practice not just an urgent care!! Thanks again to them all from front desk-to Nurse-to the Dr-you guys are amazing people persons!

- Verified patient on 6/7

I loved everything about it! My only suggestion is with the online and checking in. It is not clear. I checked in online and watched the wait list. I waited an hour since it said they were backed up. I assumed I would get a text since I was getting COVID test I should not be in the waiting room. When I was one person away I went inside and realize I actually had to check in inside and my wait would not have been that long. They understood the misunderstanding and got me in fairly quickly. I have no complaints with the urgent care. Everybody was fabulous, clean and quick care!

- Verified patient on 8/22

I was a walk-in, sign-in to out the door in 1 hour. This is excellent, especially because they saw 80 patients during a Covid peak this day, and usually see half that in a whole day. I give it 9.9/10 stars, only taking a little off Dr. S , and reluctantly so. He was very effective, diagnosed me immediately, and was correct, I believe, so far into my treatment. I only think he could have taken a better history from me. Again, this is just for constructive criticism. Would I see him again? Absolutely. Was his diagnosis accurate? I believe so. Otherwise, the other staff were very kind, welcoming, and efficient. I hope I don't have to return to Newark Valley Urgent care, but should the need arise, I would do so with confidence in the staff and facility.

Mary at the front desk was absolutely wonderful when it came to checking me in and getting me seen in a timely manner. There was also a mother who came in with her two little girls and she was very caring and compassionate to get them in quicker since the little girl had a swollen eye. She was absolutely wonderful. When I went back to get my X-ray done for my knee the gentlemen was very respectful and walked me through everything that he was doing and when it came to seeing the provider she was amazing as well and explained everything when it comes to what to do next and referring me to an orthopedic specialist. It was by far the greatest experience I’ve had in any medical facility. No one ever hopes for an urgent care trip but if it comes down to needing to go I will drive the forty minutes to go to the Loveland location!

I arrived at 8:30am so I could get in line. When I went into hallway I read a sign that said go back to your car & fill out paperwork. I tried to retrieve paperwork but couldn’t find it. I then called the office #. A very rude women asked if I had a Dr’s referral. She then rudely transferred me to a main # which was no help. I went back into hallway & waited in a line. Then one person said to someone you have to take photo of a code to get you paperwork. I then tried to get photo which took several try’s. I returned to my car & filled it out. It was lengthy & took some time. Finally I submitted it & received a note saying their were 0 patients ahead of me. So I went back into hallway. I looked threw the window on door & saw a patient filling out paperwork on a clip board. So I went in. The window urgent care lady came to window & explained to me I needed to wait in my car fit a text. She said all the rooms were occupied. She was nice. So I did but was concerned because I was the 2nd car there at 8:30am & had all these other patients before me. At 10:30am I was text to come in & go to room 8. So I checked in at window again & was told someone would come out to get me. I then was called to enter the room. The nurse was nice in asking me questions & taking vitals. I asked if I was to receive the regular test & she said yes. She also explained the wait period for results. I was given the test with a protruding stick going into each nostril for 7 seconds in each nostril. She said it would tickle but it didn’t. It was only slightly uncomfortable. Dr Lana then came in. She asked me questions & had me try to smell a alcohol swab. She was very nice & concerned. I felt confident & comfortable with the Dr & nurse. The Dr explained the patient letter sheets the nurse had given me. She was very thorough. At 11am I was released & able to go home.

The staff were super nice. Everything works as quick as possible. They Came in and did a check of us after our Covid test. Told us what to do if we were still feeling bad in few days and give us some information to help my leg pain, swelling and hurting. I have been to other Urgent cares before and I really hated them and I said I would never go back to one so I was really leery about coming to this one to get my Covid test. But now I know there is a urgent care I can go to if I ever need to. Everything was super great people were friendly and I did feel comfortable there. So thank you so much for that.

I’ve been seem at this Urgent Care, several time. However, it was much more cleaner than in the pass. The nurse more professional and kind. For example I came one time fir my throat and sinus. The nurse ask about me to be tested for the virus and I said no she got upset left the room and left my tube that placed on sink after getting tested for Threp-throat and another nurse can in with my paper work and pick it up. Another doctor act like she was scared to talk me. Nevertheless, the nurse was Jacob very polite and knew his job. The doctor I forgot her name she was on point Friday, the 30 of April ***. The best doctor I had since coming here. Very Patient, concerning and The doctor answered ever issue and pain The service was the best yet and I commend you all especially the Doctor. And Jacob not far behind. I truly appreciate your service.

I previously has a five star top notch excellent experience at UA Urgent Care. Absolutely excellent. This time I had a good experience and I received excellent care. BUT when I arrived and was checking in, it was cold, 30 degrees and the receptionist told me to go wait out in my car. I completely understand covid precautions, completely, BUT 1. I was masked 2. I was in a very high level of pain, so much pain that it was difficult for me to enter and exit my car. 3. I explained all this to the receptionist. 4. There was absolutely no other patient in the facility. No other patient waiting. 5. I stood outside and finished the paperwork. I was in pain to the point of tears. 6. The receptionist witnessed all of this. 7. The lack of empathy, compassion, and care were deeply disturbing to me. As an Urgent Care Facility, maybe you could improve your performance in this area, with a bit more attention to patient care and comfort.

I booked my appointment online. I was in the waiting room 3 minutes. The nurse was with me for about 10 to 15 minutes getting my extensive health history, was attentive and asked intelligent questions to spur anything I might have forgotten into memory. The doctor recognized me from prior visits with my children, did a necessary lab test, and we discussed if the results point one direction care will go this way; if the lab results go this direction these type of medications will be required and what my concerns were about the medications so I would receive what worked for me. The entire process with the doctor took less than 10 minutes and I was free to go. I received a call about 30 minutes later with the results and the medications were sent to my pharmacy, all of which were in formulary with my insurance. I definitely would recommend this place for urgent care needs. Everyone was so nice, professional, and fast. Now I can recover at home comfortably with chicken noodle soup and warm blankets.

The staff, nurses, X-ray technician and especially Laura Ridgley (NP) were outstanding! Laura was so kind , compassionate, and thorough and the nurses, X-ray technician and aides were all very kind and compassionate as well (helpful too when I lost my sunglasses and 2 male nurses helped me look for them). I have been to this UH Urgent Care site twice in the past month and both times have been so impressed with their friendliness, efficiency, care and compassion. The site is also very clean and their safety protocol for covid topnotch. They all deserve a special commendation and thanks. I have always appreciated medical workers, but even more so during this pandemic. Thank you Kent UH Urgent Care for exceptional quality and compassionate care.

This was my first time using Premier Health Urgent Care, and almost everything was wonderful! The wait time using Solv to schedule the appt was negligible, they took me right in. All of the staff were wonderful and I received excellent care. My ONLY nitpick is that the name is somewhat misleading. We have been using Premier Health facilities for many years and they ALL have ALWAYS taken our Tricare insurance. However, today I was told that Premier Health Urgent Care does not take Tricare because they are associated with Fidelity? Now that Medicare is my primary insurance and Tricare is secondary, it probably doesn’t make much difference to me, but it is very confusing; however, it will probably matter a great deal to patients who have Tricare as their primary insurance.

I was instructed to go to an Urgent Care by my Family Doctor so that I could be examined because their schedule was booked. I chose to go to Med Plus, it was across the street from my pharmacy. The staff made me feel very welcome and comfortable. I have many health issues and should go to the hospital to get my blood tested. I’m a difficult person to have their blood drawn so when it was presented to me that I would need to go to the hospital. I could completely understood why. I just didn’t want to expose myself to a hospital. I prefer the experience I can have when you have the same team of professionals that can put a name and face of the person that they are taking care of. Have and will refer them to others in the future.

I was suddenly experiencing COVID symptoms (fever, congestion, headache) and looked around the test sites in the Greater Dayton area in hopes of finding a test the same day. I was able to book an appt. online at the Englewood Urgent Care. I was so impressed with the care I received from start to finish. They were kind, professional, thorough, and I had no worries of being exposed with the car side check up and test. I got the results via My Chart in less than 24 hrs when competitors were quoting 6-10 days for test results. The PA, Seth, also gave me a follow up call today to make sure I knew my results. Recommend them, absolutely.

I just want to say thank you everyone was so kind and caring and compassionate. Truly putting Patients First. I would much rather spend a few minutes and an urgent care I don't get the same or better quality Care then you would receive in an emergency room. An emergency room they are so busy and so overpacked that usually you just don't get as much one-on-one attention from staff. This is the first time I've been to urgent care in years and I've got to say I'm very pleased. I called ahead they told me about their website they tell you what all they are capable of doing there what kind of testing what kind of care unbelievable thank you all very much.

My two kids and I were tested for Coronavirus. Everything went smoothly and the nurse was very nice. The only thing that I wish had been different is that we were told that we would receive a nose swab that would go only part way up. When we arrived to be tested the nurse explained that if we had gone directly through Urgent Care we would have received the swab that went halfway up, however we set up our appointment through a virtual visit and the only swabs that were available were the ones that go deep into the nasal cavity. I had unfortunately told my kids that they would not have that particular swab because that is what we were told. It all went well for them but I wish there hadn't been that confusion.

I was told to go to UH Ravenna emergency room. When I got there, I found a sign on the door stating EMERGENCIES ONLY. All others enter through the main entrance. Went in main entrance and no one there to help. Went directly to radiology and there was no one there. Called radiology and she said we should have gone through E.R. told her we were turned away from there. The reason I'm here is to find out if I have blood clots in my arm. The doctor I saw at urgent care sent the order STAT and needed to find out EMEDIATLY as the pain and discoloration is getting worse. Been waiting now for an hour and a half. Still waiting
