The staff and doctor were very friendly and kind. I felt safe and reassured during my appointment! Unfortunately, the examination rooms were not as clean as I would have liked. The trash can had a broken lid. The paper that covers the examination table typically was in disarray, and the roll of paper was on the floor, so any on the table was contamination. I think this particular location should be given more funding so they can raise the level of hygiene there. They deserve to have a location that reflects their hard work and kindness.

Excellent experience with a very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Went in for a splinter removal from my thumb and the only downside to the experience was that they didn't have enough equipment to be able to get it out. The Nurse was very apologetic and did everything she could! Great staff working here!

Austin HIV Testing

Who should get tested for HIVs?

According to the CDC, everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 should get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care. However, those at higher risk should get tested more often. This includes people who have had sex with an HIV-positive partner, people who have had multiple partners since their last HIV test, and those who have shared needles or works to inject drugs. Men who have sex with men may also benefit from more frequent testing.

Importance of getting tested

Getting tested for HIV is crucial for a number of reasons. Firstly, it allows for early detection and treatment, which can significantly improve long-term health outcomes and reduce the risk of transmission. Secondly, it provides an opportunity for individuals to learn about prevention strategies and resources available to them. Lastly, testing can help to reduce the stigma associated with HIV, as it normalizes the process and encourages open discussion about sexual health.

HIV testing options in Austin, TX:

Urgent care and walk-in clinics

Urgent care and walk-in clinics are a convenient option for HIV testing in Austin. These facilities often offer same-day appointments and extended hours, making it easier to fit testing into your schedule. One such location is AFC Urgent Care, which has received positive reviews for its short wait times and friendly staff.

Primary care providers

Primary care providers can also conduct HIV tests and provide ongoing care and treatment if needed. If you have a trusted primary care provider, this can be a comfortable and convenient testing option.

Free STD testing and community health centers

For those without insurance or who are concerned about cost, free STD testing is available at community health centers throughout Austin. These centers provide confidential testing and counseling services.

At-home testing

At-home HIV testing kits are another option for those who prefer privacy. These kits can be purchased online or at a local pharmacy and allow you to collect a sample at home that you send to a lab for testing.

Prevalence of HIVs in Austin

Austin, located in Travis County, has seen a steady increase in HIV cases over the years. According to the CDC, Austin's HIV rate is higher than the national average, but lower than some nearby counties such as Dallas County. This suggests that while HIV is a significant public health issue in Austin, it is not as prevalent as in some other parts of Texas.

Risk factors related to HIVs in Austin

Several risk factors contribute to the spread of HIV in Austin. These include unprotected sex, multiple sexual partners, and sharing needles for drug use. Additionally, certain populations, such as men who have sex with men and people of color, are disproportionately affected by HIV in Austin.

Other STDs in Austin

In addition to HIV, other STDs such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and hepatitis are also prevalent in Austin. The rates of these STDs are similar to or higher than the rates of HIV, highlighting the importance of comprehensive STD testing.

Remember, you can book same-day and next-day testing appointments at nearby urgent care centers and medical laboratories through Solv’s website and mobile app. With 111 nearby locations to get tested at, getting checked for HIV and other STDs has never been easier or more convenient.

HIV Test FAQs

  • Who should get an HIV test?

Everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 should take an HIV test at least once in their lives. Some people are more likely to get HIV and should be tested more regularly. Those who have had sex with an HIV-positive partner, those who inject drugs, sexually active gay men, and those who have unprotected sex are all included. You should get checked every 6-12 months if you have any of these risk factors.

  • How do they test for HIV?

Antibodies created by your body in reaction to the virus are examined in HIV tests. A blood test or a sample of cells obtained from the inside of the cheek can be used to do this. After that, the sample is transported to a lab, where a technician will look for antibodies.

  • How long should I wait to get an HIV test?

It can take a long time for your body to build enough antibodies for an HIV test to detect the illness if you become sick. It may take 3-12 weeks for your blood to contain adequate antibodies. Even if you have HIV, you could have a negative test result during this time.

  • How long will I have to wait for HIV test results in Austin?

Because the sample must be sent to a laboratory for investigation, most HIV test results might take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. On the other hand, some Austin clinics or doctor's offices may offer rapid HIV testing, which can deliver a diagnosis in as little as 20 minutes. Rapid HIV testing involve a little sample of blood or fluid obtained from the mouth. You'll need a follow-up blood test to confirm the diagnosis if a fast test comes up positive.

  • How much does an HIV test cost?

A variety of factors influence the cost of an HIV test, including the type of test you receive, the location where you are tested, and whether or not you have health insurance. HIV testing may be provided for free or at a low cost by some clinics or health authorities. If you're a college student, you might be able to get free HIV tests through your school.

  • Is HIV testing covered by my insurance?

The majority of insurance coverage cover HIV testing. The Affordable Care Act mandates that all new health plans provide free HIV testing for those aged 15 to 65. If you have any doubts about what is covered under your individual health plan, you can always call your insurance company or go to their website.

  • Where can I get an HIV test in Austin?

Many Austin health clinics, doctor's offices, and the health department offer HIV testing. Some pharmacies with on-site clinics may also be able to give HIV testing. Even though some clinics accept walk-in appointments, making an appointment ahead of time will save you time and ensure that you receive your test on the same day.

  • Can I get a same-day appointment for HIV testing?

Yes, Solv offers same-day and next-day HIV testing appointments. We collaborate with thousands of healthcare providers across the country to make it easier for everyone to access the medical assistance they require quickly and conveniently. On our website, you can choose a physician near you and make an appointment right now.

  • How can I book an HIV test on Solv?

Simply type "HIV test" and your location into our website's search box. You'll find a list of providers and their available appointment times on the next page. Fill out the form to arrange an appointment at a time and location that is convenient for you. Make certain that your appointment is for "HIV testing."

  • Can I test myself for HIV at home?

Although there are several home HIV tests available, not all of them are accurate or FDA-approved. For a home test, you'll need a swab from the inside of your mouth or a blood sample taken with a finger pricker. If you get a positive result on a home HIV test, you should see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment.
