Urgent Care in Yonkers, NY

Yonkers is New York's third-largest city and the largest city in Westchester County, with roughly 211,000 residents โ€” 32.9% of them born outside the United States and 45.2% identifying as Hispanic, making Yonkers one of the most foreign-born and Hispanic-majority small cities on the East Coast.1,2 In March 2025, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that St. John's Riverside Hospital โ€” Yonkers' only acute care hospital โ€” would join the Montefiore Health System as part of a transformative state safety-net hospital investment, bringing expanded cardiac and cancer services into Yonkers and the surrounding river towns.3 The combination โ€” a Spanish-speaking immigrant-majority community plus a hospital just absorbed into one of the country's largest academic safety-net systems โ€” defines the city's urgent care landscape today.

What makes Yonkers healthcare different from the Bronx and NYC?

Yonkers sits directly above the Bronx on the Hudson, which historically funneled many residents into Montefiore Bronx and other NYC hospitals. The March 2025 Montefiore-St. John's Riverside affiliation means that footprint now formally extends into Yonkers itself: cardiac and cancer service expansion is planned for both inpatient and ambulatory settings, allowing more Yonkers residents to receive complex care close to home rather than commuting to the Bronx.3 Yonkers urgent care today functions as the entry point to that larger system, with most independent and chain clinics referring complex cases into the Montefiore network.

What do Yonkers urgent care clinics treat?

Standard non-emergent care โ€” respiratory infections, sore throats, ear infections, fevers, UTIs, rashes, allergic reactions, sprains, fractures without obvious deformity, lacerations needing stitches, and routine school and work physicals. With 32.4% of Yonkers households speaking Spanish only, bilingual Spanish-English care is the operational norm at most urgent cares in the city, not the exception.1,2 If you need a DOT physical in Yonkers, a sports physical in Yonkers, or same-day STI testing, walk-in urgent care is typically the fastest path.

When should you choose urgent care instead of the ER?

St. John's Riverside Hospital operates a 24/7 emergency department serving Yonkers and the rivertowns. Save the ED for chest pain, suspected stroke, severe difficulty breathing, major trauma, deep bleeding, head injuries with loss of consciousness, or any condition you reasonably fear is life-threatening. For everything else, CityMD, GoHealth Urgent Care, NextGen Urgent Care, ProHEALTH, and Riverside Health's own urgent care locations will see you in 30 to 60 minutes for a fraction of the ED bill. Westchester ER wait times tend to run high during cold and flu season, so booking an urgent care slot in advance through Solv is usually faster.

How does insurance and Medicaid work in Yonkers?

Most Yonkers urgent cares accept commercial PPO and HMO plans (including Empire BCBS, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, and Oxford), Medicare, and New York State Medicaid. New York Medicaid is administered through managed care organizations including Fidelis Care, Healthfirst, MetroPlusHealth, EmblemHealth, MVP, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan โ€” and through Westchester County's Medicaid expansion, many uninsured low-income residents qualify for coverage. St. John's Riverside Hospital also offers financial assistance for limited-income uninsured patients through its financial counseling office at 2 Park Avenue.

How is the new Montefiore affiliation changing Yonkers care?

Governor Hochul's March 2025 announcement designated St. John's Riverside as one of six safety-net hospitals receiving transformative investment through Montefiore-led partnerships.3 For Yonkers residents, the practical effect is service expansion โ€” Montefiore is investing in cardiac and oncology programs at St. John's Riverside, which over time should reduce the number of Yonkers patients sent into the Bronx for complex care. Urgent care clinics in Yonkers feed naturally into this network, with most established providers maintaining referral relationships into Montefiore's specialty programs at White Plains, the Bronx, and now Yonkers itself.

Urgent Care FAQs

  • Does Yonkers urgent care offer Spanish-speaking providers?

Yes. With 32.4% of Yonkers households speaking Spanish only and 45.2% of residents identifying as Hispanic per Data USA's 2024 ACS estimate, bilingual Spanish-English care is the operational norm at most urgent cares in Yonkers. Solv lets you filter for Spanish-speaking providers when you book, and most CityMD, GoHealth, ProHEALTH, and Riverside Health locations staff bilingual front desk and clinical teams.
  • Does Yonkers urgent care accept New York Medicaid?

Yes. Most Yonkers urgent cares accept New York Medicaid through managed care plans including Fidelis Care, Healthfirst, MetroPlusHealth, EmblemHealth, MVP, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. Confirm your specific Medicaid plan with the clinic before booking.
  • What does the 2025 Montefiore affiliation with St. John's Riverside Hospital mean for Yonkers patients?

Governor Kathy Hochul announced in March 2025 that St. John's Riverside Hospital would join the Montefiore Health System as part of New York's transformative safety-net hospital investments. The partnership is expanding cardiac and cancer care at St. John's in both inpatient and ambulatory settings โ€” meaning more complex care for Yonkers residents stays in Yonkers rather than commuting into the Bronx.
  • When should I go to the ER instead of urgent care in Yonkers?

Go to the St. John's Riverside Hospital emergency department or another nearby ED for chest pain, suspected stroke (facial droop, arm weakness, speech changes), severe difficulty breathing, major trauma, deep wounds with heavy bleeding, head injuries with loss of consciousness, or any condition you reasonably fear is life-threatening.
  • What insurance do Yonkers urgent care clinics accept?

Most Yonkers urgent cares accept commercial PPO and HMO plans (Empire BCBS, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Oxford), Medicare, and New York Medicaid via the state's managed care organizations. Most also offer cash-pay rates for uninsured patients, and St. John's Riverside offers financial assistance for limited-income uninsured residents.
  • How long are typical ER waits in Yonkers and Westchester County?

St. John's Riverside Hospital and surrounding Westchester EDs typically run 2 to 4 hour wait times for non-emergent patients during cold and flu season, with longer waits during winter respiratory peaks. Urgent care visits booked on Solv typically complete in 30 to 60 minutes door to door.
  • Are Yonkers urgent care clinics open on weekends?

Most Yonkers urgent care clinics โ€” including CityMD, GoHealth, ProHEALTH, NextGen, and Riverside Health โ€” stay open Saturday and Sunday with extended weekday evening hours. St. John's Riverside Hospital's ED is open 24/7 for true emergencies, but urgent care will see you faster and bill far less for non-life-threatening complaints.
