Urgent care
I am from out of state visiting in the area. I chose this facility from reading the reviews and roughly knew the area of the location. I made an online appointment. From the moment I walked into the facility, being seen and treated, I have nothing but praise and respect for the staff as well as the care I received. I’m this day and age and just visiting with having an unfortunate reason to be seen/treated I was completely satisfied. A little more pricey than I expected but what can I say? Thank you just the same for your professionalism.

The staff were exceptionally kind and respectful. I expected a frazzled front desk experience, but the person was superb!

Urgent care
Was hoping for a quick walk in,  but there was a lack of staff and eventually ended with scheduling an appointment 2.5 hrs later leading to long wait in my car

Urgent care
My experience was fine in office but the billing department has inaccurately billed me for equipment and reaching the billing department to make corrections has been terrible. They do not answer their phone and you are placed on hold and nobody answers. The billing error was significant.

Urgent care
I was from out of town and was able to get a same day appointment without issue. I only waited about 5 minutes after arriving and all the staff, nurse and doctor were kind and very helpful. My prescriptions were send to the correct location and ready for pick up in an hour. Overall excellent experience. Would definitely recommend.

Urgent care
Beth was fantastic, she was thorough, answered all my questions and had great tips too! I would definitely come here again for my son’s health. However, I was speechless with how the medical assistant roughly administered medicine to my infant son. The medical assistant grabbed my son’s face, squeezed it, and squirted antibiotics into him mouth and with the last pump, they squirted it all in even though it was getting to the point of overflowing out of his mouth. Once I held him upright, he immediately spit it back out. I’m not a medical professional, so I can’t say whether this is standard of care, but I was concerned by their handling of him.

Urgent care
The online scheduling was easy with the time slot availability shown. The hour is great, open later than others in the area, avoided going to ER. I arrived & check-in was smooth & no wait. Aria looked over my wound & stitch up the cut, & the support staff was friendly & professional. I barely felt it during the process, & she periodically reminded me if too painful, she can numb more. Great facility!

Urgent Care in San Jose, CA

Santa Clara County is one of the few large U.S. counties that runs its own urgent care network. Santa Clara Valley Healthcare — the public system anchored by Santa Clara Valley Medical Center — operates walk-in clinics across San Jose, including VHC Downtown San José, the only county-operated urgent care that's exclusively walk-in. That public footprint sits alongside dense private capacity from Carbon Health, Sutter Walk-In Care (Palo Alto Medical Foundation), Stanford Health Care, and Kaiser Permanente.

What providers run urgent care in San Jose and where are they concentrated?

Urgent care in San Jose splits between four rails: county-run Santa Clara Valley Healthcare clinics, integrated systems (Kaiser Permanente, Stanford Health Care, Sutter PAMF), national retail urgent care brands (Carbon Health, MinuteClinic), and independent walk-in operators. Density follows population: downtown San Jose around the SAP Center and SoFA, Willow Glen and Cambrian on the south side, Berryessa and North San Jose along the I-680 corridor, Almaden Valley to the south, and Evergreen on the east side. Per Santa Clara Valley Healthcare, VHC Downtown San José runs 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week and is exclusively walk-in. Surrounding cities cover the rest of the South Bay urgent care footprint at Sunnyvale urgent care, Mountain View urgent care, Santa Clara urgent care, and Cupertino urgent care.

When does urgent care beat the ER for San Jose patients?

Urgent care handles non-life-threatening care at a fraction of the cost of an ER visit at SCVMC, Stanford, Good Samaritan, or Regional Medical Center San Jose. Use the ER for chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe head injury, complex fractures, deep wounds requiring surgical repair, severe abdominal pain, or breathing difficulty unresponsive to a rescue inhaler. The cost gap matters more in San Jose than most metros: a high share of working-age residents are on tech-employer high-deductible health plans, so a non-emergency ER visit can blow a year's deductible on a single bill. Sprains, urinary tract infections, ear infections, strep, flu, COVID-19, minor lacerations, and rashes belong in urgent care.

What does urgent care in San Jose treat?

Walk-in clinics handle the standard caseload — strep, flu, and COVID-19 testing, sinus infections, urinary tract infections, ear infections, pink eye, mild asthma flares, sprains, lacerations needing stitches, minor burns, and rashes — with on-site X-ray and basic labs at most locations. Sports physicals, school physicals, occupational injury intake, and DOT exams are common services. Carbon Health, Sutter Walk-In Care, and Stanford Health Care Express Care all operate same-day virtual visit options alongside in-person care. Pediatric urgent care is available through Stanford Children's, Kaiser Permanente, and several Santa Clara Valley Healthcare sites. Patients in the broader Silicon Valley footprint can compare clinic capacity at Milpitas urgent care, Campbell urgent care, Los Gatos urgent care, and Fremont urgent care.

What insurance is accepted, including Medi-Cal?

San Jose urgent care clinics accept the major commercial carriers — Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare — along with Medicare. Medi-Cal, California's Medicaid program, runs through managed care plans in Santa Clara County, primarily Santa Clara Family Health Plan (SCFHP) and Anthem Blue Cross Medi-Cal. Valley Health Plan, the county-operated commercial and Medi-Cal health plan, is in-network at Santa Clara Valley Healthcare clinics. According to the California Department of Health Care Services, Medi-Cal coverage expanded in 2024 to all eligible adult residents regardless of immigration status, broadening the pool of insured patients across the South Bay. Acceptance varies by clinic, so confirming network status before a visit is worth a phone call. Self-pay rates at Carbon Health, MinuteClinic, and Sutter Walk-In Care are typically posted online.

Are there 24-hour or after-hours urgent care options in San Jose?

Most San Jose urgent care clinics close between 8 and 10 p.m., with shorter weekend hours. VHC Downtown San José stays open until 10 p.m. seven days a week. After 10 p.m., walk-in care runs through hospital emergency departments — Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Good Samaritan Hospital, Regional Medical Center San Jose, O'Connor Hospital, and Kaiser San Jose. Telehealth visits through Carbon Health, Sutter, and Kaiser cover late-night needs that don't require hands-on care.

Urgent Care FAQs

  • Do San Jose urgent care clinics accept Medi-Cal?

Many San Jose urgent care clinics accept Medi-Cal, California's Medicaid program. Acceptance is plan-dependent: Santa Clara Family Health Plan and Anthem Blue Cross are the dominant Medi-Cal managed care plans in Santa Clara County. Santa Clara Valley Healthcare clinics accept Valley Health Plan, the county-run plan, in addition to Medi-Cal.
  • How long is the wait at urgent care in San Jose?

Most San Jose urgent care clinics post wait times under 30 minutes when a patient books a same-day reservation through Solv. Walk-in waits stretch longer in the late afternoon and during winter respiratory peaks. Booking online holds a slot and trims most of the in-clinic wait.
  • Is VHC Downtown San José open for walk-ins?

Yes — VHC Downtown San José is the only Santa Clara Valley Healthcare urgent care clinic that operates exclusively as walk-in, and it runs 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. The other Santa Clara Valley Healthcare express care and urgent care sites offer same-day or next-day appointments through MyHealth Online or by phone, with walk-ins also welcome.
  • When should I go to the ER instead of urgent care in San Jose?

Go to a Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Stanford, Good Samaritan, Regional Medical Center San Jose, O'Connor, or Kaiser San Jose emergency department for chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe head injury, complex fractures, deep wounds needing surgical repair, severe abdominal pain, or breathing difficulty unresponsive to a rescue inhaler. For most other concerns, urgent care is far faster and far less expensive than an ER visit.
  • Are there 24-hour urgent care clinics in San Jose?

No San Jose urgent care clinic runs 24 hours. Most close between 8 and 10 p.m. After-hours care runs through hospital emergency departments. Telehealth visits through Carbon Health, Sutter Walk-In Care, and Kaiser cover late-night issues that don't require hands-on care.
  • What insurance do San Jose urgent care clinics accept?

San Jose urgent care clinics accept most major commercial plans — Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare — plus Medicare. Medi-Cal acceptance is plan-dependent. Valley Health Plan is in-network at Santa Clara Valley Healthcare clinics. Self-pay rates at Carbon Health, MinuteClinic, and Sutter Walk-In Care are posted online.
  • How does a tech-employer high-deductible health plan change the urgent care vs ER decision?

A high-deductible health plan can leave a patient responsible for the full ER bill until the deductible is met. In San Jose, where many tech employers offer HDHPs, an unnecessary ER visit can run several thousand dollars out of pocket. Urgent care for non-emergencies typically costs a fraction of that. For non-life-threatening issues, urgent care is the financially sensible call.
