Woke up for third day in a row and was feeling terrible, sinus pressure, coughing and fever. I called office and I was able to get in to see a Dr within the hour. I was greeted by friendly staff and I was in and out within 45 mins with a nebulizer treatment that they administered. I love the staff and doctors they have. They are thorough and caring. Been suffering with a headache, chest pain, congestion and a sore throat. I later developed a cough on the second day. Was able to download the app that night and make a morning appointment. Very easy to use. The staff were helpful and courteous. Ms. Wendy was the best. My prescriptions were sent electronically to my pharmacy and I was given a form for a chest x ray in another facility close by. All in all it was a positive experience that I will use again.

I went in for a stye on my eyelid, was seen within 10 minutes of arrival. The PA was friendly and understanding, had a background in eye care and wrote me a prescription with a full explanation or after care. The front desk staff is not particularly personable, but whatever.

Urgent care in Baltimore, MD

Maryland has the longest emergency room wait times in the nation — an average of four hours statewide, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, with Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center averaging 5.2 hours and some Howard County hospitals exceeding 13 hours at peak. For Baltimore's 573,000 residents, walk-in urgent care clinics provide a critical escape valve: same-day evaluation for non-emergency conditions without the marathon ER wait, at a fraction of hospital costs. Maryland Medicaid covers 28.6 percent of Baltimore residents, and most major commercial plans are accepted at clinics across the city.

When should Baltimore residents choose urgent care over the ER?

Baltimore is home to some of the world's most renowned academic medical centers — Johns Hopkins Hospital, University of Maryland Medical Center, and Mercy Medical Center — but those same institutions contribute to among the highest ER volumes in the country. According to the Baltimore Banner1, Maryland emergency departments average four hours from arrival to provider contact, the longest in the nation. Urgent care is appropriate for non-life-threatening conditions: sprains, minor fractures, lacerations, respiratory infections, UTIs, sinus and ear infections, skin rashes, and most same-day illness. Save the ER for chest pain, stroke, major trauma, severe breathing difficulty, or any rapidly worsening condition. The Maryland Emergency Department Advisory System (EDAS) tracks real-time ER diversion status across the state — during high-diversion events, urgent care becomes even more critical as a primary access point.

What do urgent care clinics in Baltimore treat?

Baltimore walk-in clinics offer comprehensive same-day diagnostics and treatment. Services include rapid flu, strep, COVID-19, and RSV testing; digital X-rays; wound care and laceration repair; UTIs and kidney infections; respiratory and sinus infections; ear infections; skin conditions including cellulitis and contact dermatitis; occupational health evaluations; DOT physicals; sports physicals; immunizations; and STI screening. The city's large healthcare workforce — Baltimore is a major healthcare employer through Johns Hopkins Medicine, University of Maryland Medical System, and MedStar Health — drives demand for occupational health services at walk-in clinics near major medical campuses. Three networks anchor Baltimore's urgent care market. Patient First, a Mid-Atlantic chain with multiple Baltimore-area locations, operates extended-hours walk-in clinics from Towson to the Baltimore Beltway — and is one of the most recognized brands in the region. MedStar Prompt Care, affiliated with MedStar Health (which operates five Baltimore-area hospitals), provides urgent care with electronic health record integration into the MedStar system, useful for patients with MedStar primary care or specialty relationships. GoHealth Urgent Care, partnered with University of Maryland Medical System, offers walk-in care with direct connectivity to UMMS records. Does urgent care in Baltimore accept Maryland Medicaid?

Yes. Most Baltimore urgent care clinics accept Maryland Medicaid, which as of October 2025 covered 1.4 million Marylanders statewide, according to KFF2. In Baltimore specifically, 28.6 percent of residents are covered by Medicaid — one of the highest municipal Medicaid rates in the nation, reflecting the city's high poverty rate and eligibility expansion. Maryland Medicaid is administered through managed care organizations including CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield of Maryland Medicaid, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, and Amerigroup Maryland. Patient First and MedStar Prompt Care both accept Maryland Medicaid at Baltimore-area locations. According to the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange3, Maryland also operates a competitive ACA marketplace that has enrolled over 330,000 residents in expanded Medicaid. Uninsured Baltimore residents can access self-pay urgent care for approximately $100–$175 per visit, versus $1,000 or more for an equivalent non-emergency ER visit in Maryland.

What health issues are most prevalent in Baltimore?

Baltimore faces several overlapping public health challenges that drive urgent care demand. According to the Baltimore City Health Department4, the city experiences above-average rates of respiratory disease, driven by aging housing stock with lead and mold exposure risk in older rowhouse neighborhoods, combined with persistent air quality issues from port and highway emissions. Flu season (November–March) hits Baltimore hard given the city's density, transit usage, and school-age population — Solv data consistently shows urgent care visit surges in Baltimore during flu peak weeks. Summer heat is increasingly consequential: Maryland has seen record heat events, driving dehydration and heat-related urgent care visits in neighborhoods with limited green space and older housing without central air conditioning. Baltimore's opioid crisis, driven partly by the city's proximity to I-95 distribution routes, also places pressure on emergency departments, making urgent care access for non-addiction-related illness even more important as a parallel care pathway.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts5, Baltimore city had an estimated population of 573,002 as of 2023, with a median household income of approximately $55,000 and a poverty rate of 18.4 percent — above the national average and consistent with the city's high Medicaid and uninsured population burden.
