I had to go in because of an allergic reaction to ivy growing in my yard. I was applying all the over the counter medicine, baths and ointment but was getting in my eyes and continuing to spread. The lobby is impeccably clean, everyone was super friendly and professional. Though it was a little bit of a drive for me, I’m so glad I chose the location. Dr Mark and Meagan were so caring and understanding, my soul started to feel a healing before I even left their facility. Thank you guys so much!

Getting Urgent Care in Waco, TX

What is urgent care?

Urgent care is a type of walk-in clinic that offers immediate, non-emergency care outside of a traditional hospital emergency room. Urgent care centers are designed to treat injuries or illnesses that require immediate attention but are not life-threatening. These facilities are often open during extended hours, including evenings and weekends, providing a convenient alternative for individuals who cannot wait for a regular doctor's appointment but do not require the comprehensive services of an emergency room.

Common services and reasons for visit

Urgent care centers in Waco, TX, offer a wide range of services to address various health concerns. Whether you're dealing with a minor injury, an unexpected illness, or need routine health services, an urgent care clinic can provide the necessary care.

  • Minor injuries: This includes sprains, strains, minor fractures, and cuts that may require stitches.
  • Illnesses: Urgent care centers can treat common illnesses such as colds, flu, ear infections, strep throat, and urinary tract infections.
  • Routine health services: Many urgent care clinics offer routine health services like physical exams, vaccinations, and preventive screenings.
  • Diagnostic services: Urgent care facilities often have on-site laboratories and imaging services to provide immediate diagnostic tests like blood tests, X-rays, and EKGs.

Types of healthcare providers

When you visit an urgent care center in Waco, TX, you'll encounter a team of healthcare providers with diverse roles and training. Here are the common types of providers you might meet:

  • Physicians: These are medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who have completed medical school, residency training, and are licensed to practice medicine. They diagnose illnesses, prescribe medication, and oversee patient care.
  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs): NPs are registered nurses with advanced training and education, usually a master's or doctoral degree. They can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and provide treatment.
  • Physician Assistants (PAs): PAs are medical professionals who practice medicine under the supervision of a physician. They can diagnose illnesses, develop and manage treatment plans, and prescribe medications.
  • Registered Nurses (RNs): RNs provide direct patient care, administer medications, and collaborate with the rest of the healthcare team to coordinate patient care.
  • Medical Assistants (MAs): MAs perform administrative and clinical tasks to support the healthcare team. This might include taking patient histories, preparing patients for exams, and drawing blood.

When to go to an urgent care

Urgent care centers provide immediate care for non-life-threatening health issues that require attention within 24 hours. These may include minor fractures, sprains, burns, cuts, infections, and illnesses such as the flu, stomach ailments, or ear infections. Urgent care centers are equipped to handle these situations promptly, typically without the long waits associated with ER visits. They also offer diagnostic services like X-rays and lab tests. If your condition is severe or life-threatening, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, or signs of stroke, you should call 911 or head straight to an emergency room.

Urgent care vs emergency room (ER)

The main difference between an urgent care center and an emergency room lies in the severity of the health condition being treated. While both provide immediate care, ERs are equipped to handle life-threatening emergencies, whereas urgent care centers focus on non-life-threatening conditions. ERs are open 24/7, while urgent care centers usually have extended hours but may not be open round the clock. The cost of treatment at an ER is also typically higher than at an urgent care center. Therefore, for non-emergency situations, urgent care centers are often a more convenient and cost-effective option.

Urgent care vs primary care

While both urgent care centers and primary care physicians provide medical care, the key difference lies in the nature and timing of the care provided. Primary care physicians are your go-to for routine check-ups, preventive care, and managing chronic conditions. They know your medical history and work with you on a long-term health plan. Urgent care centers, on the other hand, are designed to provide immediate, one-off treatment for acute illnesses or injuries. They do not replace the need for a primary care physician, but are a convenient option when you need immediate care and your primary care physician is not available.

Urgent care vs retail clinic

Retail clinics, often found in pharmacies or supermarkets, offer basic healthcare services for minor illnesses and preventive care. They are typically staffed by nurse practitioners or physician assistants. Urgent care centers, however, offer a broader range of services and can treat more serious conditions like minor fractures or burns, which retail clinics are not equipped to handle. Urgent care centers also often have diagnostic facilities for X-rays or lab tests, which most retail clinics do not offer. Therefore, while retail clinics are a good option for simple health needs, urgent care centers offer more comprehensive care for urgent non-life-threatening conditions.

Preparing for Your Visit

Before heading to an urgent care center, there are a few things you can do to ensure a successful visit. First, make sure to bring a valid form of identification and your insurance card. If you have any relevant medical records or a list of current medications, bring those along as well. It's also a good idea to bring a method of payment for any potential out-of-pocket costs.

During Your Visit

During your visit, you will be assessed by a healthcare professional who will ask about your symptoms and medical history. You may undergo diagnostic tests such as blood tests or X-rays, depending on your condition. The goal of an urgent care visit is to diagnose and treat non-life-threatening conditions quickly and efficiently, so you can expect your visit to be relatively brief.

Follow-up Care and Communication

After your visit, the urgent care center will typically provide instructions for follow-up care. This may include a prescription, advice for at-home care, or a referral to a specialist. It's important to follow these instructions to ensure your recovery. If you have any questions or concerns after your visit, don't hesitate to reach out to the urgent care center.

Cost and Insurance Details

The cost of an urgent care visit can vary depending on the services provided. On average, you can expect to pay between $71 and $125 for basic care, with additional costs for services like shots, X-rays, and labs. This is significantly less than the average cost of an emergency room visit, which can be around $1,318. Most urgent care facilities offer both diagnostic and preventive care such as well visits, immunizations, STD testing and annual physicals. They take patients during all hours of operations, which offer a significant convenience to most people who have and continue to undergo the need for sudden and immediate medical attention.

Recent Urgent Care Reviews (20)

I was unsure about doing a virtual visit for a rapidly spreading rash, however, I spoke with the doctor in less time that it would have taken me to drive to the clinic! He guided me through showing him the areas of concern and was able to identify it and explain to us what need to be done. He was very professional but yet we were still treated as valued patients as we always feel when we have to visit the urgent care. He sent our scripts over and we were completely done in less than 25 minutes from the time I began filling out the online request! I would definitely do the video visitation in the future.

Very pleasant and friendly staff and the facility is super clean. I'm happy that we have such good quality of urgent care in China Spring. Wait time was not an issue, I was seen quickly after arriving.

Urgent Care is a place I now choose fire my medical needs. The girls out front are sweet and get their job done! Harris is not only professional, but caring and understanding with her patients. She is knowledgeable and has helped me n family when we seek medical attention. I went to the facility on Monday, November 23. They were busy and Harris was not in that day. There was a male NP attending patients. I did not get his name. Well I really didn’t think I got the medical attention I was looking for. He was rushing, I am post Covid so my voice is not normal, I shake and my oxygen levels drop when I do things. He looked frustrated. I wasn’t even given chance to tell him what all was wrong with me. He did take chest X-ray. Then proceeded in sending me to the ER, where I waited 3.5 hours while people with Covid and lord knows what where walking in and some had no mask. So I walked out, did not want to go through that illness again. I just felt like he didn’t want to deal with me so passed me on. I know my lungs are weak and need oxygen at home... I was in tuba Ted 15 days in icu and spent time in rehabilitation hospital to walk and talk again! Why not just get me some oxygen to go home ? Anyway, Now I’ll be suffering until After Thanksgiving! I’ve always told my staff.. off you do not love what you do, then go find it!

Had to wait longer than I preferred, but ea staff mbr was kind & helpful. After I said something abt my wait, they called me in. I WAS anxious abt potential exposure to the coronavirus at an urgent care/testing facility, so maybe I was impatient. Thanks for the service.

This was our first experience at this pedi urgent care and I was very impressed. The staff was incredible and so accommodating to us. Our 6 yr old came in with strep symptoms and was in a lot of pain and discomfort. They accommodated her immediately to ensure she was comfortable while we waited our turn. Even letting her lay down in a vacant room while we waited. They checked on us periodically to let us know where we stood in line and talked so kindly to both of us. Best urgent care experience by far. I have 2 suggestions - 1. Since it’s a pedi focused urgent care it would be lovely to have bright and colorful decor surrounding us while we waited. The walls were completely bare and beige. Something simple like color and bright pictures but can really change a mood. 2. Instead of offering a sucker at the end (with the stickers - thank you) offer brave little boys and girls a toy. I understand the reason to reward them but if their immune system is already compromised it’s not a good idea to introduce high fructose corn syrup, sugar and dyes into their system that’s already fighting. A silly cheap toy would be just as rewarding without being detrimental. The stickers were great though and definitely made her smile!! Overall- really positive experience!!

Hello, this was my first visit to Fast Aid. My experience was that everything was top notch, other than one minor glitch The the x-ray report was given to me on a dvd-r. My laptop is able to read disks, however it wasn't able to read this one. So I wasn't able to follow up with my PCP later that afternoon. Even if I was able to read the disk it is an older technology that isn't used nearly as much as it used to. It seems like they might want to look into better ways to share information. But it was really no big deal and didn't taint an otherwise pleasant visit. This isn't me complaining, merely providing constructive feedback. Again I will say that overall I was pleased with the services provided. Anyway I am hoping the good service continues, so I know I'll have a place to go for urgent care. To me this was so much easier and faster than trying to get in to see my PCP. It wasn't an emergency so it didn't make sense to me to go to an ER. Fast Aid seems to me to be this go between. It's a great idea. Sort of like the difference between going to the Walgreen's around the corner instead of having to drive all the way across town to go to the grocery store, just to get one or two items real quick. This location is super convenient for me too. Glad they're in town now. Thanks!

I was only in the urgent care for about 30 minutes because no one else was there. The staff is always nice and helpful all the way around.

Every time I go to urgent care the staff is very friendly , kind & caring. I would recommend anybody to go to urgent care better than going to a hospital if can be treated there. Thanks Urgent Care For Your Kind & Caring Service!!!!

I went in with a dog bite to my hand. It was a deep puncture. I was in so much pain. They cleaned my hand ,took X-rays and put a splint on it. I had a Tetanus shot as well. They were so compassionate, kind and thorough. My appointment was at 5:45 and I was on my way home by 7 pm. I did not wait at all to see the medical staff. I was prescribed antibiotics and Motrin and this morning, I woke pain free. I am so grateful to the entire wonderful staff. I just cannot day enough good things about this place. I recommend it highly. This is where I’ll be coming from now on. I had called several other places before this and the other places wanted me to report my dog , they told me I’d have an extremely long wait and then my husband called Southwest Urgent Care. What a wonderful difference! I felt at ease immediately and they took such good care of me. I am beyond satisfied with their service. They are extremely knowledgeable, professional, yet friendly, kind and patient . One of the best experiences I have ever had at a clinic. I may be gushing, but they certainly deserve accolades!! Thank you so much from a very satisfied and happy patient.

Dr. Marco Vela excellent dr great sense if humor. I saw him fir the 1st time at Urgent care ❤ he took care if me and my pain in mt ears with antibiotics and a wonderful shot for pain. As for thw staff @ Urgent Care wonderful and polite. But staff at Dr Habers off the FRONT desk people and the off staff very RUDE. One of them told me i have to hear this all the time. I said well this should tell you something is not right.i told her its sad to hear yoy say this so i will maje sure Dr Milton hears about this cause he probably doesn't even know whats happening in his off. We have been patients of his for over thirty plus yrs. She hanged up phone twice left me on hold and then she put someone else to take my appt fir me and my husband Adan ana Maria Guajardo we LOVE DR HABER HE IS A EXCELLENT DR AND I TOLD HER I AM SURE IF HE KNEW WHAT WAS GOING ON HE WOULD TELL YOU ALL TO BE MORE COURTEOUS ESP SINCE HE HAS MANY OLDER PATIENTS LIKE US IN THE MID 60 AND ALL THIS VIRTUAL OFF VISITS IS NEW TO US W THIS PANDEMIC AND WE EXPECT AND DESERVE TO BE TREATED NICELY. IF UT WAS UP TO US WE WOULD STICK TO SEEING HIM IN PERSON HE IS ALWAYS FRIENDLY. SO TELL STAFF TO PUT THEMSELVES IN OUR SHOES. AND TO BE NICER, CAUSE IT WOULD BE SAD TO HAVE TO CHG DR AFTER 30 PLUS HE KNOWS ALL OUR HISTORY AND IS PART IF OUR LIVES HE IS LIKE FAMILY TO US.

I reported to the front desk and told them I had an appointment to be tested at 7 pm. I was told to wait outside and I would receive a text when they were ready to see me. On the website I saw where I could fill out some paperwork which I did. The front desk came out to get me and asked for my paperwork. I told them that I had filled it out on line. The young lady said”ok, we’ll just need some initials.” I was led to a room where I was given copies of the paperwork I had already filled out on line with “x”s for my initials. I went ahead and initialed each “x”. The nurse came in, took the paperwork from me and told me, “But you didn’t fill out the rest of the information.” By this time I was more than frustrated with the whole situation and the nurse sensed it. She offered to finish filling out the paperwork. I would like to mention that this was none of her doing. The rest of my experience was actually very good. This is the second time we use this urgent care clinic and will probably use it in the future. Just need more attention at the front desk.

I went in for a pregnancy confirmation and it was the best experience ever. Thank you so much for making my experience fun and exciting. I only wish this facility could be more than just a urgent care facility like my primary physician. The facility was super clean and staff very professional and went the extra mile to serve my needs.

I have never seen a doctor like this before. I was a bit apprehensive, but with COVID I didn’t want to go to the ER or urgent care. Dr. Daniel was very nice and quick. Thank you!

Was told to just go across to urgent care, so now I’m paying for two visits for the same purpose. Waste of money and time.
