Melanie went out of her way to accommodate my husband and me when we came in to get Covid tests. Due to our unforeseen scheduling error, we didn't have an appointment at that time, but she said we could wait in case she could fit us in between patients, even though they were fully booked. She was able to complete our tests quickly and courteously. We were extremely pleased with the care we received. Thanks, Melanie!

Dr Fitzpatrick was thoughtful and attentive and did what tests she could. Her diagnosis of pneumonia was not confirmed by the staff at CPMC, however. It seems I have some sort of infection, maybe more than one—perhaps bronchitis for one. The high pulse rate was due to dehydration. BTW the X-ray copy I took to the hospital was incompatible with its system. Nonetheless I appreciate the care I was given at Carbon.

Wait time was good, got in at 1:40pm for my 1:30pm appointment. Staff was friendly and explained things to me. I did kind of get the impression that they were tired of me because I was trying to ask clarifying questions to make sure that later on I will not be thinking about the questions I was afraid to ask :P. It’s very easy for me to just accept what I’m told, and not ask anything, but I’m trying to learn to advocate for myself because it seems like that’s what is needed in healthcare. But I could tell they were definitely getting tired of me asking my dumb questions and just repeating answers they already gave because I was obviously didn’t hear it the first time. I probably need to work on my communication skills because I don’t feel like either of us felt like we were getting through to the other person. It felt like we both felt like we knew what the other person was saying and that they just weren’t willing to hear it.

San Francisco HIV Testing

Who should get tested for HIV?

Anyone who is sexually active should consider getting tested for HIV, especially if they have multiple partners or do not consistently use protection. It is also important for those who share needles for drug use to get tested, as HIV can be transmitted through shared needles. According to the CDC, individuals who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should also get tested for HIV to prevent mother-to-child transmission.

Importance of getting tested

Getting tested for HIV is crucial for several reasons. Early detection can lead to early treatment, which can significantly improve health outcomes and reduce the risk of transmission to others. It also allows individuals to make informed decisions about their sexual health and behavior. According to the CDC, nearly 1 in 7 people in the United States who have HIV do not know they have it, which underscores the importance of regular testing.

HIV testing options in San Francisco, CA:

Urgent care and walk-in clinics

Urgent care and walk-in clinics in San Francisco, such as Dignity Health-GoHealth Urgent Care and Carbon Health, offer HIV testing. These clinics often offer same-day and next-day appointments, which can be booked through Solv’s website and mobile app.

Primary care providers

Primary care providers can also conduct HIV tests and provide ongoing care and treatment if needed. If you have a primary care provider, you can discuss your concerns and they can guide you through the testing process.

Free STD testing and community health centers

There are several community health centers and clinics in San Francisco that offer free or low-cost HIV testing. These centers are dedicated to providing accessible healthcare services to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.

At-home testing

At-home HIV testing kits are another option. These kits can be purchased online or at a local pharmacy and allow individuals to test themselves for HIV in the privacy of their own home.

Prevalence of HIV in San Francisco

According to the CDC, San Francisco has one of the highest rates of HIV in the country. While the number of new HIV diagnoses has been declining over the past decade, there were still 223 new HIV diagnoses in San Francisco County in 2018. This rate is significantly higher than nearby counties such as San Mateo County and Amador County.

Risk factors related to HIV in San Francisco

Risk factors for HIV in San Francisco include unprotected sex, multiple sexual partners, and intravenous drug use. Certain populations, such as men who have sex with men, transgender individuals, and people of color, are disproportionately affected by HIV in San Francisco.

Other STDs in San Francisco

In addition to HIV, other STDs such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and hepatitis are also prevalent in San Francisco. The rates of these STDs are also higher in San Francisco compared to nearby counties and the national average. These STDs can also increase the risk of acquiring HIV, which further underscores the importance of regular testing.

HIV Test FAQs

  • Who should get an HIV test?

Everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 should take an HIV test at least once in their lives. Some people are more likely to get HIV and should be tested more regularly. Those who have had sex with an HIV-positive partner, those who inject drugs, sexually active gay men, and those who have unprotected sex are all included. You should get checked every 6-12 months if you have any of these risk factors.

  • How do they test for HIV?

Antibodies created by your body in reaction to the virus are examined in HIV tests. A blood test or a sample of cells obtained from the inside of the cheek can be used to do this. After that, the sample is transported to a lab, where a technician will look for antibodies.

  • How long should I wait to get an HIV test?

It can take a long time for your body to build enough antibodies for an HIV test to detect the illness if you become sick. It may take 3-12 weeks for your blood to contain adequate antibodies. Even if you have HIV, you could have a negative test result during this time.

  • How long will I have to wait for HIV test results in San Francisco?

Because the sample must be sent to a laboratory for investigation, most HIV test results might take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. On the other hand, some San Francisco clinics or doctor's offices may offer rapid HIV testing, which can deliver a diagnosis in as little as 20 minutes. Rapid HIV testing involve a little sample of blood or fluid obtained from the mouth. You'll need a follow-up blood test to confirm the diagnosis if a fast test comes up positive.

  • How much does an HIV test cost?

A variety of factors influence the cost of an HIV test, including the type of test you receive, the location where you are tested, and whether or not you have health insurance. HIV testing may be provided for free or at a low cost by some clinics or health authorities. If you're a college student, you might be able to get free HIV tests through your school.

  • Is HIV testing covered by my insurance?

The majority of insurance coverage cover HIV testing. The Affordable Care Act mandates that all new health plans provide free HIV testing for those aged 15 to 65. If you have any doubts about what is covered under your individual health plan, you can always call your insurance company or go to their website.

  • Where can I get an HIV test in San Francisco?

Many San Francisco health clinics, doctor's offices, and the health department offer HIV testing. Some pharmacies with on-site clinics may also be able to give HIV testing. Even though some clinics accept walk-in appointments, making an appointment ahead of time will save you time and ensure that you receive your test on the same day.

  • Can I get a same-day appointment for HIV testing?

Yes, Solv offers same-day and next-day HIV testing appointments. We collaborate with thousands of healthcare providers across the country to make it easier for everyone to access the medical assistance they require quickly and conveniently. On our website, you can choose a physician near you and make an appointment right now.

  • How can I book an HIV test on Solv?

Simply type "HIV test" and your location into our website's search box. You'll find a list of providers and their available appointment times on the next page. Fill out the form to arrange an appointment at a time and location that is convenient for you. Make certain that your appointment is for "HIV testing."

  • Can I test myself for HIV at home?

Although there are several home HIV tests available, not all of them are accurate or FDA-approved. For a home test, you'll need a swab from the inside of your mouth or a blood sample taken with a finger pricker. If you get a positive result on a home HIV test, you should see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment.
