Urgent care
I usually do not have any issues with this AFC urgent care. However, today’s doctor, (I believe he was the “head doctor” at this location) has horrible manners and provided terrible care. The whole visit with the doctor, which lasted less than 2 minutes, was useless. The doctor’s attitude was “what am I supposed to do about it?)

Urgent Care in Newark, NJ

Newark is New Jersey's largest city and home to University Hospital — the state's only state-owned hospital, which functions as the safety net for Newark, East Orange, Irvington, and Orange. Roughly 58% of University Hospital's gross revenues come from Medicaid and uninsured patients, and approximately 75% of its patients are publicly insured or uninsured, per its 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment. Newark's under-65 uninsured rate is 19.6%, well above Essex County's 13.8%, and the city's poverty rate of 27.4% is roughly twice the county average. That coverage and income gap shapes how Newark residents use urgent care.

What makes Newark's urgent care market distinct?

University Hospital is the largest charity care recipient in New Jersey and the only Level I adult trauma center in Essex County. In December 2025, the New Jersey Department of Health and Department of Human Services secured federal approval for approximately $540 million in FY 2026 funding to support hospitals that care for uninsured residents and to expand Medicaid outpatient services — University Hospital is among the largest beneficiaries. For Newark residents, the practical implications are real: hospital emergency departments stay busy, and urgent care clinics — including University Hospital's own urgent care offerings, RWJBarnabas Health locations, and a dense network of CityMD and AFC clinics — provide a faster, lower-cost option for non-life-threatening conditions.

Which urgent care clinics serve Newark?

University Hospital operates urgent care offerings including Virtual Urgent Care, which provides real-time video-chat access to a doctor for adults and children ages five and older. RWJBarnabas Health, New Jersey's largest health system, runs urgent care locations affiliated with Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (part of the RWJBH network) and across the metro. CityMD operates more than a dozen urgent care locations across Newark and the Essex County metro with extended evening and weekend hours. AFC Urgent Care has Newark and surrounding-area locations. Hackensack Meridian Health Urgent Care and Atlantic Health System Urgent Care round out the major hospital-affiliated options. Saint Michael's Medical Center (Prime Healthcare) operates the city's other adult acute-care hospital. For uninsured residents, Newark Department of Health and Community Wellness provides primary care at no cost to eligible clients, including those who are uninsured, underinsured, or undocumented.

When should you go to the ER instead of urgent care in Newark?

Go to a Newark-area emergency department — University Hospital (Level I adult trauma), Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Saint Michael's Medical Center, Clara Maass Medical Center (Belleville), or Mountainside Medical Center (Glen Ridge) — for chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, severe abdominal pain, head injuries with loss of consciousness, uncontrolled bleeding, major trauma, or any condition that feels like an emergency. University Hospital handles the highest acuity cases as the only Level I adult trauma center in Essex County. Use urgent care for fevers, sore throats, ear infections, simple fractures, sprains, urinary tract infections, mild asthma flares, eye irritation, rashes, and lacerations needing stitches without heavy bleeding.

What conditions and services do Newark urgent care clinics handle?

Most Newark urgent care clinics handle the conditions a primary care office would see, plus on-site labs, digital X-ray, and minor procedures. Common visit reasons include strep throat and respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, ear infections, sprains and simple fractures, lacerations needing stitches, eye irritation, mild asthma flares, dehydration with IV fluids, COVID-19 and flu testing, and routine wound care. CityMD, RWJBarnabas Health, Hackensack Meridian, and Atlantic Health urgent care locations connect into their parent system's electronic health record, which simplifies follow-up specialist referrals, imaging, and ER escalation. Newark's asthma and respiratory illness burden is well-documented — the city has historically reported asthma rates above the New Jersey state average, driven by air quality near the New Jersey Turnpike, Newark Liberty International Airport, and the Port Newark–Elizabeth Marine Terminal complex — so reactive airway and asthma flares are a year-round volume driver. Seasonal demand peaks for respiratory illness from November through February (flu, RSV, COVID-19 co-circulation). Summer brings heat-related visits during humid Atlantic seaboard heat waves. DOT physicals, occupational health, and pre-employment screening are widely available — particularly at CityMD, AFC Urgent Care, and Concentra for Newark's port, logistics, and Newark Liberty International Airport workforce.

Does Newark urgent care accept NJ FamilyCare?

Yes — NJ FamilyCare is New Jersey's combined Medicaid and CHIP program, and most Newark urgent care clinics accept the major NJ FamilyCare managed-care plans. The five NJ FamilyCare MCOs are Aetna Better Health of New Jersey, Fidelis Care, Horizon NJ Health, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, and WellCare. CityMD, AFC Urgent Care, RWJBarnabas Health Urgent Care, Hackensack Meridian Urgent Care, and University Hospital's urgent care offerings all accept NJ FamilyCare across most or all of these MCOs. Charity Care eligibility is also available at NJ hospitals — including University Hospital and Newark Beth Israel — for uninsured residents who meet income limits, with no charge for income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. Cash-pay rates at private urgent care chains run $130 to $230 for a basic visit.

What are urgent care hours and wait times in Newark?

Most Newark urgent care clinics — CityMD, AFC, RWJBH, and Hackensack Meridian — are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends. CityMD locations often run later, until 9 or 10 p.m. seven days a week. University Hospital's Virtual Urgent Care is available beyond traditional clinic hours. True 24-hour walk-in care is available only at hospital emergency departments. Average urgent care wait times in Newark typically run 20 to 45 minutes, with longer waits Sunday evenings, Monday mornings, and during peak respiratory season (November through February).

  • When should I go to the ER instead of urgent care in Newark?

Go to a Newark-area ER — University Hospital (Essex County's only Level I adult trauma center), Newark Beth Israel, Saint Michael's, Clara Maass, or Mountainside — for chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, severe abdominal pain, head injuries with loss of consciousness, severe bleeding, major trauma, or any life-threatening condition. Urgent care covers fevers, sprains, lacerations, UTIs, ear infections, and most respiratory illness.
  • Are there 24-hour urgent care clinics in Newark?

For 24-hour walk-in care, the options are hospital EDs — University Hospital, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Saint Michael's Medical Center, Clara Maass Medical Center, and Mountainside Medical Center. University Hospital also offers Virtual Urgent Care via video chat for adults and children five and older as a lower-cost option for non-emergency needs after hours.

Many private urgent care clinics also publish cash-pay rates ($130–$230 typical). University Hospital's Virtual Urgent Care is another lower-cost option.
  • Why does Newark have such a high uninsured rate?

Newark's under-65 uninsured rate of 19.6% reflects the city's 27.4% poverty rate (about 2x the Essex County average) and a workforce concentrated in service-sector jobs that often don't include employer coverage. Many residents are eligible for NJ FamilyCare but have not yet enrolled. University Hospital and the Newark Department of Health both provide enrollment assistance — University Hospital was awarded $182,203 in state grant funding to help enroll under- and uninsured NJ residents in ACA health plans.
