Pediatric urgent care
I brought my daughter in for stitches. There was no wait and they treated her quickly. I’ve been to ERs for similar issues and have easily spent hours waiting for one or two stitches, so I was so surprised to be in an out in less than hour. The doctor here was so friendly and so reassuring to my daughter. The nurses made sure that my daughter was comfortable and helped assuage her fears. I would give the experience ten stars if I could.

Urgent care
I called ahead to this location and was told there were about nine people already waiting to be seen, and that that was consistent for the day up to my call. I also tried calling other locations without any success - the phone number was bad or nobody answered the call. So I went and was pleasantly surprised to see only one person in the lobby. I was assisted much sooner than expected. The longest delay was waiting for the doctor to arrive in my room, but even that was not too long. I left the building feeling very good about the services at this location.

Urgent Care in Chesapeake, VA

Chesapeake covers 340 square miles of southern Hampton Roads — Virginia's second-largest city by area and population — stretching from the Elizabeth River to the Great Dismal Swamp on the North Carolina line. Its healthcare anchor stands apart from the rest of the region: Chesapeake Regional is the only independent, community-governed hospital in Hampton Roads.

What makes urgent care in Chesapeake different from the rest of Hampton Roads?

Most of Hampton Roads runs through Sentara or Bon Secours. Chesapeake is the exception. Chesapeake Regional Healthcare was created by the General Assembly in response to citizen demand and remains community-governed — the only independent hospital system in the region. In September 2025, the Virginia State Health Commissioner designated Chesapeake Regional Medical Center a provisional Level III Adult Trauma Center, expanding trauma options for southern Hampton Roads and northeastern North Carolina patients who previously had to route through Norfolk. Patients in Virginia Beach and across the water in Norfolk have Sentara-dominant networks; Chesapeake is the one Hampton Roads submarket where an independent system anchors emergency and walk-in care.

When should you go to urgent care instead of the ER in Chesapeake?

Urgent care fits roughly 70 to 80 percent of unplanned needs — bronchitis, UTIs, ear infections, sprains, lacerations needing stitches, mild asthma flares, work and school physicals, and most pediatric fevers. Emergency departments at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center and Sentara Princess Anne in nearby Virginia Beach handle chest pain, stroke symptoms, head injuries with loss of consciousness, severe bleeding, pregnancy complications, and trauma. With Chesapeake Regional's new Level III trauma designation, more major-injury cases stay local rather than transferring north.

Which urgent care brands operate in Chesapeake?

The market mixes independent and chain providers. Velocity Urgent Care operates multiple Chesapeake locations and is one of Hampton Roads' largest independent walk-in operators. Patient First runs full-service walk-in clinics with on-site labs and imaging. Sentara has a footprint through Sentara AFC Urgent Care, and Bon Secours runs Bon Secours InHealth urgent care sites in and around the city. MedExpress and Concentra fill out the occupational-medicine and after-hours layer. Patients commonly cross into Portsmouth and Suffolk for additional options.

Does urgent care in Chesapeake accept Virginia Medicaid?

Virginia Medicaid expanded eligibility in 2019 and now covers adults up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level through five managed-care plans: Aetna Better Health, Anthem HealthKeepers Plus, Molina Complete Care, Sentara Community Plan (formerly Optima Family Care), and UnitedHealthcare. Most Chesapeake urgent care brands accept Virginia Medicaid through one or more of these MCOs. Statewide, Virginia's uninsured rate rose to 6.9 percent in 2024, with an estimated 52,000 additional uninsured residents — confirm coverage with the specific location before walking in. Optima Health members regained in-network access at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare facilities starting March 2023 under an extended contract.

What are the most common urgent care visits in Chesapeake?

The southern Hampton Roads climate drives a distinctive seasonal pattern: summer heat-and-humidity dehydration, tick-borne illness from the Great Dismal Swamp recreation corridor, and Atlantic hurricane-season storm injury surges. Pollen counts in the Tidewater region are among the highest on the East Coast — Chesapeake walk-in clinics see heavy spring and fall asthma and allergy volume. Naval families across the Hampton Roads region drive sports physicals and pediatric urgent care traffic year-round; many Norfolk Naval Station and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story dependents live in Chesapeake.
