NextCare is an Incredible urgent care. Immediately you’re welcomed and instantly feel relief and in a safe place. Which is so important to me. I can always be honest and not feel judge for anything I’m going through. I will never go to any other place and will always recommend them. Thank you so much for giving me a pleasant and easy service/care. Generally I bet high anxiety from going to the doctors and I was completely out at ease. This is what a providers office should be like. Such amazing employees and providers that CARE and not act like it’s just job. Thank you so so much.

Been battling apparently Bronchitis for a while.  Came in, booked an appointment, waited an appropriate time for urgent care.  I was given Prednisone which greatly helped within a couple hours.  Took the providers advice to add vitamin C,D and zinc and drink 100 ounces of water, stopped working out which was aggravating my condition and feel great today.  Little disappointed with my provider back home in MN that I went in a couple times and it got to this point but grateful that I was able to get it taken care of down here.

I’ve been in and out of ER and urgent care for my condition, this was the first dr to give me some answers on what it could be as well as referrals to other physicians who can help as well as tests that can be done. Friendliest most knowledgeable Dr I’ve seen in a very very long time. Highly recommend.

Trying to fill out paperwork on the phone with the slow bandwidth in the office was frustrating. I also don’t understand why I was given an order for an xray when I hadn’t fallen. Why would a dry cough and pain below my rib cage warrant the possibility of an xray?  Otherwise the PA was very helpful.

Recent COVID-19 Testing Reviews (20)

We had a terrible time finding a place to get a rapid COVID test. Luckily, we found NextCare where we got in without an appointment in a reasonable amount of time and they accepted our insurance. Win, win, win!

- Verified patient on 8/20

The only issue I had was that I asked the Dr for a note for work bc I've had to call in a couple of days and all I got was a paper saying I've had the covid test

- Verified patient on 8/6

Went for covid test. People were rude and the staff was just trying to do their job. I felt bad for them. I was nice to them, and they were wonderful and friendly to me and my kids.

- Verified patient on 6/23

For the number of people in line the wait was fine. Sat in our car until we were called in. Staff was great. Got the Covid test and results about 30 min later. Awesome job to the staff and thank you for what you do.

- Verified patient on 12/12

After calling and waiting 23 minutes for testing site availability I was directed to the Tramonto facility. Upon arriving I over heard the receptionist telling a caller that there are no available appointments left for today. As when she professionally addressed me she noticed the was a cancellation and filled me into that spot. I’m not familiar with the covid testing processes but the facility didn’t appear to be busy in the least. No one in the waiting room and one person waiting in there vehicle. I think the staff was very professional and actually got me in, tested, and the results by the time my appointment time was due.

- Verified patient on 12/18

Very simple process for Covid testing. Unfortunately when we arrived they were out of test kits even though we had appointments. They should hold back enough kits for those people who took the time to make appointments since you can't make an appointment for less than 4 days in advance.

- Verified patient on 7/17

Over 2 hour wait in my car, I live in AZ, to hot to have AC running not moving, then almost another hour for Covid test and discharge! Now I have to wait 7-10 days for results , frustrating for sure

- Verified patient on 6/22

I had such a pleasant experience at this urgent care on Camelback road. I honestly hate going to any doctor or urgent care, but I needed a Covid test because I was having symptoms. Everyone from the front desk staff, medical assistants, and the PA were wonderful. I really wish I knew the PAs name because I’d name her on this review. Everyone was so nice, thorough, professional and helpful. It was easy to register and to check out. It was a great experience and I would definitely come back…Thank you everyone for continuing to serve on the front lines during Covid 19 and putting your own health on the line to help all of us who are sick and in need of care. I wish you the best during the holidays and pray for continued good health…

- Verified patient on 12/23

Because I have to get a covid test every week to see my father who is in a nursing home this next Care facility has become like a second family the way they treat me the way I see them treat everybody that comes into the clinic I recommend people go up to this clinic even if it's not convenient for them the staff is exceptional a shout out to Carrie and Tiffany

- Verified patient on 4/19

Unlike many Urgent Cares, the staff was...well....nice! The new front desk younger gal, Nikki, was so respectful and kind to not only us, but all of the patients that came in. If they didn’t have a Covid appointment, she handled it with great professionalism, AND helped them by giving specific information on places to try. The male Tech, Vince, actually said his name, what he did, and did a great job. The P.A., Nadine, popped her head in to let me know about how long the test would take, which I thought was a good effort (she was busy!) We got our rapid Covid tests in 15 minutes! Well done Allegiant-Phoenix!

- Verified patient on 12/26

I went in for a COVID test. I knew very little about the process and could not have felt more cared for. I waited in my car for 5 minutes before getting a call from an extremely kind healthcare personnel member. He asked a variety of questions and outlined exactly what would happen, I went in, they comfortably took my vitals, someone else immediately after came in to take my COVID test (extremely easy), the they outlined how I could find my results within 1-3 days. Thank you so much for the amazing care.

- Verified patient on 11/18

Very organized process to handle all the people needing to get a CoVid test. Just need to put better signage up front on the window so everyone understands the process as well as on the website for that specific location. But once signed in they kept you informed of your place in line etc. If I need another test I would definitely go back to that clinic

- Verified patient on 12/17

My visit was originally for a Covid test because of symptoms I was having. The test was negative, but the healthcare provider went above and beyond to go past that and found out what was actually wrong with me.

- Verified patient on 2/26

The provider and nurses were great. The exam room was clean. They made my daughter feel comfortable, especially because she was afraid the COVID test would hurt. Lobby was a little dirty, front desk not so friendly. I was ignored by one when I asked a question. The other said wait I’m still on my lunch break but was sitting on her desk in the lobby. Other than that, the rest of the staff were great.

- Verified patient on 8/20

I was a walk in for covid testing and sinus pain. They were able to get me in. Waited 10 mins in car while filling out paperwork then was called in. Rapid Test was done. Saw one of the NPs who gave me my negative test results and a prescription for the sinus issues. Everyone was polite and professional. This is the 2nd time I have been here. Great facility.

- Verified patient on 12/18

I went for walk in covid test. Wait time was very reasonable. Once inside the the test was fast and explained clearly. The PA was phenomenal!!! She answered all questions without rushing through. Her demeanor was authentic and empathetic. First time to this facility and I would recommend.

- Verified patient on 11/28

The Provider wasn’t happy I asked for more than a covid test. I wanted to find out what I was sick with not just a covid test. The facility was not clean. Trash cans were over flowing.

- Verified patient on 12/1

I went in for a sore throat. They did a swab for Strep and it was negative. I looked at my visit summary and it says I went in for COVID symptoms but that was not true. They did not even do a COVID test. If I was there for COVID, I would hope they would do a COVID test versus a swab for Strep.

- Verified patient on 10/13

Walk-in for Covid test. On advice of staff, got there an hour b/f clinic opened. Was 3rd in line, got in, had Rapid Test, got results in 15 minutes, and out - total about 1 hour. Staff was very professional and nice, and clearly working hard. There were 15-20 people in line when I left, so glad I went early.

- Verified patient on 1/8

I waited over an hour and a half but I guess since they may be one of the few places in the city that'll take walk-ins for a covid test maybe I should have been glad that it wasn't any longer. Everything else about this dissenter was perfect wonderfully clean. Kind helpful people. Very professional and confident is grateful for the good care that they gave me thank you Gene

Phoenix COVID Testing & Rapid Testing

Types of COVID Tests

There are two types of coronavirus tests (COVID-19 tests) available, those that can test for a current infection (viral test) and those that can test for a past infection (antibody test).

Viral COVID testing can be done in a few different ways, the most common being nose swabs, but saliva tests are becoming more popular. Some tests are processed out on-site and can provide results in as little as 30 minutes. These are called rapid COVID tests. The majority of tests, on the other hand, are collected at the clinic on-site and then submitted to off-site labs for processing. Results can take up to 2-3 days to arrive.

Antibody testing looks for a past infection and may not reveal if you have an active COVID-19 infection because antibodies can take up to three weeks to form in your body. The presence of COVID antibodies may help to prevent you from becoming infected with the same virus again; but, because the clinical understanding of COVID-19 is still developing, it's unclear how long that protection will continue.

Who should get tested for current infection

The CDC currently defines four instances where COVID testing is recommended:

  1. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 including fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea.
  2. If you have been in close contact with someone with confirmed COVID-19. Close contact is defined as within 6 feet for a total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period. If you have been vaccinated, or tested positive in the past 3 months and not experiencing symptoms, you do not need to be tested.
  3. If you are unvaccinated and participated in high-risk activities where distancing is not an option. This could include travel, large social or mass gatherings, crowded indoor settings, etc.
  4. If you have been referred to get a COVID test by your healthcare provider or local health department.

How is testing done for COVID-19?

Most COVID tests are collected by a nasal swab. A member of the medical team puts a swab inside your nose for a few seconds on each side to collect the sample. After that, the samples are packaged according to CDC guidelines and tested on-site or transported to a facility for testing. The lab will test samples for the presence of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), which causes COVID infection and either your care provider or the lab will notify you with the results as soon as they are available.

PCR vs Antigen Testing

Viral COVID tests are available as molecular and antigen tests. The molecular test, also known as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, usually delivers results within a few days since most of these tests are sent to offsite labs for analysis. The average turnaround time for PCR test results is 48 hours, but in some instances may be significantly longer due to backlogs related to insufficient lab volume and capacity. Antigen tests are also known as rapid tests and have an average turnaround time of between 15 to 30 minutes.

Both PCR and rapid COVID tests can be used to test people exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, those who were close contacts to COVID-19, and those without COVID-19 symptoms who live or work in a high-risk setting (such as a nursing facility); or those individuals who are identified as part of outbreak detection and response. The rapid COVID test is also recommended for the screening of residents or healthcare workers at skilled nursing facilities along with a PCR confirmation, and for repeat screening for the early detection and prevention of outbreaks in congregate settings (such as schools, workplaces, and prisons).

COVID testing is available for free under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which includes testing for those without health insurance. To reduce the risk of facing extra costs related to COVID testing, ask your primary care doctor to recommend a free COVID test site, and confirm there are no charges or fees for the test that are not covered by your insurance plan. Additionally, avoid getting a COVID test at a hospital or free-standing emergency room, as these facilities may charge fees for COVID testing and related services.

COVID-19 Testing FAQs

  • How much does COVID testing cost in Phoenix?

In many cases, COVID testing can be free. Many state and local health departments continue to offer free testing to community residents as part of their response to the pandemic. In other cases, commercially insured patients, or those on Medicare or Medicaid, may receive testing at no out of pocket cost, or with a nominal office visit copay. For cash paying patients, or those that need rapid COVID testing which will deliver results in under an hour, COVID tests can range from $50 to $150 each. It is best to call your healthcare provider prior to getting tested to better understand the cost of the specific test you require.

  • Where can I get free COVID testing in Phoenix?

COVID testing is available for free under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which includes testing for those without health insurance. Check with your Phoenix-area health department as they are generally a good source for free COVID tests, or can at least point you in the right direction. Additionally, you can ask your primary care provider to recommend a free COVID test site.

  • Where can I get COVID testing in Phoenix?

COVID testing is available at many outlets near Phoenix including urgent care centers, retail clinics, primary care offices, health departments, and more. Different venues will have different types of tests available, many at different price points. Some testing sites are allowing walk-in patients, however, many are still requiring some degree of advance booking to control patient volume.

  • Where can I get a rapid COVID test in Phoenix?

Rapid testing—both PCR (molecular) and antigen tests—is offered through many Phoenix-area urgent care centers and physician offices, usually at an additional cost ranging from $50 up to $150 per test. Usually this will allow you to get results back in under an hour, and require advanced booking through the provider. However, if you can wait 24 hours for your results, many labs are turning around send-out lab tests in that time frame, which could save you some money.

  • Can I get tested for antibodies if I am sick with COVID-19 Phoenix?

An antibody test for COVID-19 might inform you if you previously had a coronavirus infection. Because it can take between 1–3 weeks after an infection for your body to develop these antibodies, an antibody test during an active infection would not be successful. To see if you are currently infected, you need a viral test.

  • Do I need a COVID test if I have been vaccinated?

Even if you have been fully vaccinated, if you have been exposed to someone who has COVID-19, experts believe that you should be tested yourself, particularly if you are experiencing cold and flu symptoms commonly aligned with the coronavirus.

  • How long does COVID testing take?

Getting a COVID test is quick. Most tests are done with a nasal swab, which takes less than a minute to swab both nostrils. Depending on where you get your COVID test, this means you could be in and out of the testing site in as little as 10-15 minutes. During busy times—particularly around holidays—testing sites may be busier than usual and wait times may be longer.

  • How long does it take to get COVID test results in Phoenix?

Most labs are returning send-out molecular (PCR) COVID test results within 24-48 hours of the test. Some sites take longer, so call and ask if the reason for the test is proof for travel. Rapid COVID tests are processed on-site and are able to deliver results in under an hour, sometimes in as little as 15 min.

  • Do COVID tests detect the Delta variant and Omicron variant?

Regular COVID tests are able to detect both the Delta variant and Omicron variant in that they can determine whether or not you have the coronavirus. However, they can't tell which variation is involved. That would necessitate genomic sequencing, which is a different process from regular virus testing that not all labs can undertake. Sequencing is uncommon and can cost up to $100 per test. Since the treatment is the same for any variant, it is not clinically useful to an individual patient to know whether the infection was caused by a variant or not.
