Urgent care
Scheduled an appointment but still had to wait for about an hour until I was seen. Also, the music that was playing at the front desk is fun while listening outside of a medical office but not for patients that don't feel well. It was loud and not the least bit relaxing.

Urgent care
Once upon arrival I was welcomed and taken cared by the front desk. Waiting time was minimal and was greeted by kind medical staff. The nurse practitioner that took care of me was top notch in professionalism. She gave me literature on the problem I came in for which was so helpful. I would highly recommend this location. Everyone is great!

Urgent care
Got a text that I was ready to be seen so I came to the clinic but then waited an hour to be seen. They refused to do most accurate testing (vaginal swab for gonorrhea and chlamydia testing in women… they said urine was the only option which is not standard of care for women and has many false negatives). No clinic has ever refused to do GC/CM swab for testing. Just so odd to me. They seemed agitated that I even asked. I’m an ER PA with 10 years experience who tests others for STIs all the time, so why would they not practice evidence-based medicine at AFC?

Urgent care
I have had many accidents in my life. Been to the ER more than a dozen times for a variety of mishaps, mistakes, and missteps that required medical care and stitches. Never have I experienced the care and kindness I have ever received from any medical care facility as I did by going to South Bay Urgent Care. I hate going to hospitals and try to avoid going at all cost. Unfortunately I sliced one of my fingers half way through and needed stitches. I feel fortunate and lucky enough to have had Isaac Ortega-Endahl, PA-C sew my finger back together. The man has amazing skill sets and should be a surgeon. Thank you Dr. Issac. I truly appreciate your kindness. I didn't realize that I got there close to their closing time and feel grateful to your entire staff that took care of me that night. Kindness is a rare thing in the world today. I'm so thankful that it exists in your staff at South Bay Urgent Care. Truly amazing people.

Urgent Care in San Diego, CA

San Diego sits at the southwestern corner of the continental United States, sharing a border with Tijuana and hosting the world's busiest international land border crossing at San Ysidro. That geography defines the city's healthcare landscape in ways unique among major U.S. metros — and the 2024 expansion of Medi-Cal to all income-eligible adults regardless of immigration status has changed who can access care and how. Urgent care centers across San Diego are central to that story.

What conditions do San Diego urgent care centers treat?

Urgent care centers in San Diego treat a wide range of non-emergency conditions: respiratory infections, sinus and ear infections, strep throat, flu, COVID-19, UTIs, sprains and strains, cuts requiring stitches, minor burns, rashes, and allergic reactions. Most locations offer on-site X-ray, lab testing, and same-day prescription writing.

San Diego's active outdoor population — surfers, hikers, cyclists, and beach-goers — also generates a steady stream of sports-related and environmental injuries: ankle sprains, lacerations, minor fractures, and sun- or heat-related symptoms during the summer months. Urgent care centers can evaluate and treat most of these conditions without the cost or wait of an emergency room visit.

Sharp Rees-Stealy, part of Sharp Health System, operates an extensive urgent care network across San Diego County. Scripps Urgent Care, UC San Diego Health's same-day care clinics, and AFC Urgent Care in Mission Valley also serve patients across the region. National chains including CareNow and GoHealth have a growing presence as well.

How did the 2024 Medi-Cal expansion change urgent care access in San Diego?

On January 1, 2024, California completed its Medi-Cal expansion by making coverage available to all income-eligible adults regardless of immigration status. More than 700,000 undocumented immigrants statewide gained access to full-scope Medi-Cal coverage — the largest single expansion of California's Medicaid program in years.

For San Diego, with its large binational community and proximity to Baja California, the practical impact is significant. Many long-term San Diego residents who previously had no insurance option — regardless of how long they had lived and worked in the region — became eligible for Medi-Cal coverage in 2024. Urgent care centers that accept Medi-Cal are now a primary access point for patients who may be using insurance for the first time.

Despite the expansion, an estimated 27% of undocumented Californians under age 65 remain uninsured — typically because household income exceeds the Medi-Cal threshold but falls below the level where Covered California plans become affordable. For these patients, urgent care centers that offer transparent self-pay pricing remain an important resource.

Medi-Cal and health insurance coverage in San Diego

Medi-Cal is California's Medicaid program, covering more than 15 million Californians statewide — the largest Medicaid enrollment of any state. San Diego County's Medi-Cal managed care plans include Sharp Health Plan, Community Health Group (CHG), Molina Healthcare, and Inland Empire Health Plan in parts of the county. Most urgent care centers in San Diego accept Medi-Cal, including Sharp Rees-Stealy, Scripps Urgent Care, and other regional and national chains.

California's uninsured rate has fallen to a record low 6.4% — the largest percentage drop of any state during the ACA era — driven in large part by Medi-Cal's successive expansions. Major commercial insurers including Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Aetna, United Healthcare, and Cigna are also widely accepted at San Diego urgent care locations.

Military families in San Diego — one of the largest Navy and Marine Corps concentrations in the country — are covered by TRICARE and can access network urgent care centers. The Naval Medical Center San Diego also offers urgent care services for eligible beneficiaries.

Finding urgent care across San Diego's distinct communities

San Diego spans more than 370 square miles with a diverse set of communities, each with different healthcare access profiles. Urgent care density is highest in central and northern San Diego: Mission Valley, Kearny Mesa, and the UTC/La Jolla corridor. North County communities including Carlsbad, Escondido, and Oceanside have their own urgent care infrastructure, often anchored by Palomar Health and Sharp facilities.

South Bay — including National City and Chula Vista — has the highest concentration of Spanish-speaking and recently Medi-Cal–enrolled residents in the county. Urgent care centers in this area are particularly important for patients navigating Medi-Cal managed care for the first time. East County communities including El Cajon, Santee, and La Mesa are served primarily by Sharp and Scripps urgent care locations.

Real-time wait times and online booking for urgent care centers across all these areas are available on Solv, allowing patients to check availability and confirm insurance acceptance before leaving home.

Emergency room or urgent care in San Diego — how do you decide?

Call 911 or go to an emergency room for chest pain, signs of stroke (sudden numbness, facial drooping, slurred speech), difficulty breathing, severe abdominal pain, major trauma, or any life-threatening emergency. San Diego's major ERs include UC San Diego Health (Hillcrest) with an average wait time of approximately 4.2 hours, Sharp Memorial Hospital at approximately 2.9 hours, and Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego at approximately 2.6 hours. Wait times across San Diego County hospitals vary by as much as three hours.

For conditions that are uncomfortable or concerning but not emergencies — infections, minor injuries, rashes, fevers, or respiratory illness — urgent care is faster, lower cost, and appropriate. Most San Diego urgent care centers see patients in under an hour and can handle X-rays, labs, and prescriptions on-site.
