Urgent care in Houston, TX

Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the nation at 16.7%, making urgent care a critical access point for Houston's 2.3 million residents and the 300,000+ uninsured in Harris County. Most Solv-listed clinics accept walk-ins and same-day online booking, with STAR Medicaid accepted at participating locations.

How does Texas's uninsured rate affect urgent care access in Houston?

Texas carries the highest uninsured rate of any state in the country — 16.7% as of 2024 — and Houston reflects that burden acutely. Harris County has more than 300,000 uninsured residents, and nearly 12% of Houston-area children lack health insurance, more than double the national average, according to Houston Public Media analysis of 2024 data. Texas did not expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, leaving working adults without children largely ineligible regardless of income.

Urgent care clinics in Houston serve a higher proportion of uninsured and underinsured patients than clinics in most other major metros. For the uninsured, urgent care represents a meaningfully lower-cost alternative to the emergency department for non-life-threatening conditions. Most Solv-listed Houston clinics offer self-pay rates and can treat the full range of non-emergency illness and injury without requiring insurance verification at the time of visit.

STAR, Texas's Medicaid managed care program for children and families, covers urgent care at participating locations. Children under 21, pregnant women, and certain qualifying adults are eligible. For uninsured adults who don't qualify for STAR, Harris Health System operates a sliding-scale county clinic network as an additional safety net option alongside urgent care.

When is urgent care the right choice for heat-related illness in Houston?

Houston's summer heat creates urgent care demand patterns unique to the Gulf Coast. In summer 2024, the power outages caused by Hurricane Beryl resulted in 318 heat-related illness cases treated across Harris, Montgomery, and Fort Bend counties in a single multi-day period, with adults 65 and older representing 39% of cases, according to Houston Health Department data. Heat-related ER visits in the Houston metro surge from May through September, peaking in August when heat index values regularly exceed 105°F.

Urgent care is appropriate for mild-to-moderate heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, weakness, cold or pale skin, fast or weak pulse, nausea, and muscle cramps. These conditions can be safely treated at urgent care with IV fluids and electrolyte replacement at most Solv-listed Houston clinics. Booking through Solv is recommended rather than walking in during peak summer afternoons, when heat-illness volumes at nearby clinics are highest.

Go to an emergency room — not urgent care — for heat stroke: high body temperature above 103°F, hot and red skin without sweating, rapid and strong pulse, confusion or loss of consciousness. Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency. Call 911 immediately.

What services do urgent care clinics in Houston offer?

Urgent care clinics in Houston handle acute illness, heat-related conditions, minor injury, occupational health, and on-site diagnostics. Three widely listed networks on Solv in the Houston metro offer the following services.

Next Level Urgent Care, Houston's largest locally founded urgent care chain, operates an extensive network across the metro including locations in the Heights, Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, and Pearland. Services include flu, strep, and COVID-19 testing; IV hydration therapy; X-ray imaging; laceration repair; occupational health evaluations; and on-site labs for rapid diagnostics.

Concentra operates multiple locations across Harris County and the greater Houston area, providing occupational health services alongside general urgent care. Services include workers' compensation visits, drug and alcohol testing, employment and DOT physical examinations, treatment of work-related injuries, and general urgent care for illness and non-occupational conditions.

NextCare Urgent Care provides flu and COVID-19 testing, treatment of acute respiratory illness, minor injury care, STI testing, and sports physicals at Houston-area locations. NextCare's Texas network integrates with electronic health records for care documentation and follow-up referrals.

Additional providers in the Houston metro include FastMed Urgent Care and hospital-affiliated urgent care operated by Memorial Hermann and Houston Methodist. Check individual clinic pages on Solv for location-specific service lists.

What insurance do urgent care clinics in Houston accept?

Most urgent care clinics in Houston accept major commercial insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, and Humana. Texas's 16.7% uninsured rate means that cash-pay patients are a significant portion of urgent care volume in Houston — most Solv-listed clinics publish self-pay rates and can treat uninsured patients without prior authorization.

STAR, Texas's Medicaid managed care program, covers urgent care visits at participating locations. STAR primarily serves children under 21, pregnant women, and qualifying low-income adults. Texas's decision not to expand Medicaid means many low-income Houston adults remain in the coverage gap — earning too much to qualify for STAR but too little to afford marketplace coverage. For these patients, urgent care's self-pay model provides meaningful access to care that would otherwise require an expensive ER visit.

Insurance and STAR acceptance vary by clinic. Check individual clinic pages on Solv to confirm your specific plan is accepted before booking. For uninsured patients, confirming the self-pay rate directly with the clinic before your visit avoids unexpected billing.

How do I book urgent care in Houston on Solv?

Solv shows real-time appointment availability for urgent care clinics across the Houston metro. Filter by ZIP code or neighborhood — Montrose, Midtown, Memorial, Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands — to find the closest available clinic. Book a same-day appointment in under two minutes, or walk in to most locations without a reservation.

During Houston's summer heat peaks and hurricane season, booking ahead through Solv is particularly useful. High-heat weeks in July and August see elevated walk-in volume at clinics near heavily affected neighborhoods. Checking real-time availability before leaving gives an accurate picture of current wait times.

Urgent Care FAQs

  • When should I go to urgent care for heat-related illness in Houston?

Urgent care is appropriate for heat exhaustion — heavy sweating, weakness, pale skin, nausea, and muscle cramps. Most Solv-listed Houston clinics offer IV fluids and electrolyte replacement for these conditions. Go to an emergency room for heat stroke: body temperature above 103°F, hot and red skin, confusion, or loss of consciousness. Heat stroke is life-threatening — call 911.
  • Does urgent care in Houston accept STAR Medicaid?

Yes. STAR, Texas's Medicaid managed care program, covers urgent care visits at participating locations. STAR primarily serves children under 21, pregnant women, and qualifying low-income adults. Because Texas did not expand Medicaid, many Houston adults remain ineligible regardless of income. Check individual clinic pages on Solv to confirm STAR acceptance at your nearest location.
  • What happens if I don't have insurance at urgent care in Houston?

Most Solv-listed urgent care clinics in Houston accept uninsured patients at self-pay rates. Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the nation at 16.7%, so cash-pay is a common payment method at Houston urgent care clinics. Confirm the self-pay rate directly with the clinic before your visit to avoid unexpected billing.
  • What insurance do urgent care clinics in Houston accept?

Most Solv-listed clinics in Houston accept major commercial plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, and Humana. STAR Medicaid is accepted at most locations. Check individual clinic pages on Solv to confirm your specific plan before booking.
  • When should I go to an ER instead of urgent care in Houston?

Go to an emergency room for chest pain, difficulty breathing, suspected stroke, heat stroke, major trauma, or any condition where life or limb may be at risk. Urgent care handles flu, respiratory illness, heat exhaustion, minor injuries, COVID testing, UTIs, and other non-life-threatening conditions. For emergencies, call 911.
  • Does urgent care in Houston offer IV hydration for heat illness?

Yes. Next Level Urgent Care, one of the most widely distributed urgent care chains in the Houston metro, offers IV hydration therapy at multiple locations. This makes urgent care a practical option for heat exhaustion treatment during Houston's summer heat peaks. Check individual clinic pages on Solv to confirm IV hydration availability at your nearest location.
  • Are there Spanish-speaking urgent care clinics in Houston?

Yes. Given Houston's large Spanish-speaking population, many urgent care clinics across the metro offer services in Spanish, including bilingual staff and Spanish-language intake materials. When searching for urgent care in Houston, look for clinics that specifically list Spanish language services, or call ahead to confirm availability before your visit.
